I’m realizing something going through this again. I don’t think I fully processed Kimberly’s past during the reaction. That paints the film in a new light for me and I wish they handled that specific bit a little differently. It puts it even closer to The Family That Preys than I realized (I mentioned a parallel during our discussion). The difference there was Sanaa Lathan revealed her reasoning through an emotional monologue. The revelation here was done in a quick fleeting comment with the whole family in a list of other things Madea explained. I’ll take the blame for that for not connecting the dots in that moment - which, reflecting on it, was quite obvious. Derp. My bad. Had I realized the gravity of Kimberly’s past better, I would definitely spoken about that more during our discussion because there’s actually a lot to unpack there which now disappoints me that we didn’t. Oh well. You live and learn.
@PurpleFlowerwork7 сағат бұрын
It's okay, at least your reaction was genuine, and you guys caught most of the details. That moment happened fast and wasn't really unpacked, so many people miss it.
@Celticrose99997 сағат бұрын
That really does change a LOT of the dynamics and context. Like why she doesn't trust her partner's efforts and why she wasn't quick to help out her family. And why she kept that cold hard wall up around herself. Given how incredibly young she was, she should have been in therapy, but no doubt they denied the need for that along with blaming her. I will admit, I'm not unbiased. I'm a survivor and I've worked with child survivors, and the long term effects, even with therapy and support can be severe. But without those, the unrecognized trauma and damage is just....catastrophic

You're alright! As someone who isn't exactly team Tyler Perry but loves seeing your guys' first-time reactions, something that I came to notice as a little girl who happily watched these movies whenever they came out is that he tends to just casually shoehorn extremely traumatic experiences of female characters' into the plot without delicately tackling it, but instead using it to initiate a preachy Christianity moment. It's actually a longstanding grievance many have with him, and some even refer to his work as "black trauma p0rn"

It's a double edge sword, because yes, Kim's family did not support her when she needed it most as child. However, Kim is now an adult, and she also doesn't help herself by not releasing this trauma by refusing for anyone (her husband is a good example of this) to help her. It's like that phrase "drinking poising and expecting someone else to die". She deserved to be helped by her family, but she also deserves to give herself some grace even if others didn't. She isn't the villain at all, but when you get older, nobody is responsible for relinquishing your trauma except for you. You have to go out and seek the help you need.

I won't say it gets better or that it gets easier - you do get used to it though (until you're watching a what you think is a random happy go lucky Desi film, and the mum ends up dying from cancer at the end so she has to make peace with the incoming stepmother 🥹) It might just be the TP effect of being able to see the plot from 3 miles away, or that this is yet another movie where Loretta Devine is "Mama on her deathbed" but it didn't get me.... This time. I am truly sorry for your loss though. Take it one day at a time, and always give yourself grace.

**As a future trauma rehabilitation therapy graduate (in less than a month)** I would like to say Although Kimberly is an adult now, she was/is very much stunted by the assault that happened to her as teen. A lot of times when trauma occurs, you get stuck in that place, for Kimberly she was the angsty teen who was betrayed by her own mother and uncle. And that’s how she was portrayed in the rest of the movie. Also she was forced to hold onto the secret for so long, she probably felt like she couldn’t go out and seek counsel. And it’s not like she was assaulted and that’s it, she had to live with the proof (Byron) of her assault and bear the child of her assailant. I could go on and on because i actually did a case study on this film for an assignment but yeaaaah, Kimberly deserved better, Byron deserved better, and the family kimberly INTENTIONALLY created deserves better as well. Also Tammy was dead wrong for outting the secret. It doesn’t matter how she felt about Kimberly, her actions impacted Byron too.

(Little rant) Shirley did what a lot of black families tend to do when it comes to predators in the family by brushing it under the rug, which is why madea monologue after the funeral is very spot on. due to that trauma Kimberly is this hateful person because she never got the help she needed and her mom thought she was doing the “right” thing by just covering it up which was a short term fix to a bigger issue. This is why Kimberly have so much resentment and anger towards her mother. In many ways that’s valid but how she treated her husband and how hard she was on their child makes her a bad person in my opinion. Our trauma does not excuse our terrible actions, while it explains why she is the way she is it doesn’t excuse it. I’m loving all these reactions and conversations

Jaby lusting after Shannon Kane (Kimberly) was great!!! Beyond tickled. I’m really enjoying you all react to Tyler’s movies! Thank you guys!!! And now I want to watch Maury. I thought Jaby was going to tell his story off cam. Happy I was wrong. 😂 😂

Y'all HAVE TO watch the plays!!!! They are amazing and I believe they're better than the movies. Love your reaction by the way. Especially to movies like this that a lot of movie commentators/reactors aren't doing.🥰💞

If you didn't know "Cora" and "Brown " (Tamela and David Mann) are married to each other in real life. They are both PHENOMENAL singers especially in the Gospel world.

The father daughter relationship that Cora and Mr. Brown have in these movies were always funny to me knowing that they are married in real life. Fun fact: Tamela Mann (Cora) is a very famous gospel singer
