The scene with the grits is folk legend in the community, mainly because of the legendary Al Green. He was unknowingly seeing a married woman with 3 kids. After finding out he broke it off, but she didn't take rejection well. One night while he was in his bathroom bathing, she broke in his home and threw boiling grits over him, causing 2nd degree burns and multiple skin graphs. She then shot herself. They played Al Green's Love and Happiness during the kitchen scene to reference Al Green.

I must say that over the past 5 years or so, Tyler Perry has been getting a lot of criticism for his films not progressing. It’s funny because watching you - people outside of black culture - react to the movie brings me back to why his earlier work was so great and hit so hard. The stories don’t hit this powerfully in his recent work, and THAT’S what is missed about his work. Thank y’all for reacting and allowing me to remember why his work was so amazing to begin with!
@yalldumb2387Ай бұрын
idk I kinda agree with the boondocks, a lot.. if not all of his earlier work consists of some evil dark skin bald dude who abuses the female lead, and some light skin savior comes in out of nowhere and saves the day, and then Madea comes in randomly throughout to say some ghetto shit that sets black folk back 20 years, compared to his newer stuff, his old work's are masterpiece's, but on it's own, it's still not progressive for the culture or cinema, nor is it written in a way that is refreshing, it follows a very similar formula every time
@Arionthelady16 күн бұрын
@@yalldumb2387 Still, there is something impactful about the earlier ones I'd say. I feel like Medea is there to draw the audience to seeing heavy dramas that reflect problems in the community. Not progressive or masterful cinema by any means but there is something to just showing a glimpse behind some closed doors that a lot of people don't wanna acknowledge and then tacking on a happy ending that many don't get.
@yalldumb238716 күн бұрын
@@Arionthelady I can agree, and I will say this, I think they do have a charm to them that does make them enjoyable, I do enjoy his earlier works, but that being said, they have a lot of flaws from a writing point of view, but even if they are flawed and sometimes follow the same formula, they can be a good watch

Wow dope that you guys are checking out the Tyler Perry movies! Can’t wait to see you guys react to Why did I get married?, and Madea goes to Jail one day!

Very famously, singer Al Green's wife threw grits on him.

SHE DID????
@AlastorsShadowDemonАй бұрын
@@mandarinclemmie His girlfriend, yes. She then ended her life afterwards. We don’t root for her though. She did it because he wouldn’t marry her.

That's why they're playing Al Green's song during this scene.

Not Al Green's wife. She was a fan who began sleeping with him. He was not aware she was married and moved on. She showed up at his home one night, distraught because she said she left her husband and children to be with him. He calmed her down and thought everything was okay and went to take a shower, when the lady threw scalding hot grits on him. She then went back into the guest bedroom and killed herself.

Madea may be crass, mean and downright angry. But she effing cares about her family. Blood or not. And of course. She was born 6 foot 5 and 250 lbs lol she had to be tough. And she down for business. Also gotta say, mama's speech at the end. That was something else.

The Grits reference is from the real life incident where 70’s soul/gospel singer Al Green’s ex- girlfriend threw a pot of boiling grits on him!
@tatinadunlock5736Ай бұрын
The song that is playing during the “Grits” incident, is Al Green!

The reference that Madea made on the bus of the “all my life I had to fight” monologue was from the Color Purple

So dope to see ya’ll reacting to Black movies. The more ya’ll watch, the more ya’ll will understand the references. For instance, the “all my life I had to fight,” was from The Color Purple. I loved this.

One of my favourite Madeia films! I'm an artist myself, and to this day Frankie's way of painting still stayed with me. Whenever I do something with a touch of abstract concepts in my work, that one scene where he painted the red over her chest to represent her pain always comes up in my mind.

@sagesmith3222Ай бұрын
I remember watching this movie when I was younger and it always spoke alot to me. When I got older my mom who's a bus driver met my step-dad who was also a bus driver at the time and they really bonded. The first thing he taught me was how to cook the things his mother taught him to cook when he was young. Learning how to make his style of Grits was very heartwarming for me. He's taught me so much since.

@CinePals in case you didnt know that the actor who's playing Frankie is Boris Kodjoe, plus you should react to Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins that has Martin Lawrence, Monique, Mike Epps, Cedric Entertainer, Nicole Ari Parker, Michael Clarke Duncan {R.I.P}, Louis C.K and James Earl Jones {R.I.P}
