yeah you're right that he's asking for proof from God even if it means to strike him down just to prove he's really there - it's supposed to actually be "reign" down, not "rain" but knowing Tyler it's probably a double meaning anyway i find it interesting how he says "i'm calling your lightning" - he puts an emphasis on "lie" i think you still have a couple more from Self Titled Fall Away (there is a live version featuring Dr. Blum on trumpet that's very good, but you'll want to have lyrics pulled up if you do this version) Oh, Ms. Believer

yay !!! i think i’ve said this before, but self titled is my favorite album. this song really helped me connect to tyler on a personal level bc i question everything too, even things i’ve been taught “ not to “. i personally don’t see anything wrong with questioning or demanding proof either, but living in the bible belt exposed me to a lot of who do have problems with it lol

I know there's some confusion about whether the lyrics are "why would you" or "why wouldn't you let us use your name". I always thought it was the second one, because in the Old Testament the Hebrew name for God (Yahweh as we pronounce it now) was never spoken and never written in full. I figured that lined up better with Tyler trying to be struck down. But now I'm listening more closely and it sounds like it's the first one. More thinking needed on that one...

Yep! I think you got it! Also, the video had that one line wrong, it's not "why won't you let us" but rather it's "Why would you let us / Use your name?" But it still has the same idea behind it, using His name in vain or like how there have been wars fought in His name, etc. Then there's the "I am calling your lightning" line that I absolutely love. Throughout the song Tyler is basically demanding proof, whether it is by being shown a face or being struck down since even though being destroyed would be bad it will technically serve as more than enough proof. But that one line, the way he sings it makes it sound like he says "I am calling your light- ning" which can mean like an actual light, but it also sounds like he's saying "I am calling your lie." Given that a lot of his earlier songs do deal with him questioning God and all, it makes sense he'd throw that in there. I just really love how it's hidden in there given that the title is "implicitly" asking for proof and all. I look forward to more! :)

I actually talked about this song at length in a video essay I did on twenty one pilots, particularly dealing with the Christian themes in their songs. And in some of their songs I hadn't even caught the allusions till watching some of your videos here where you were quoting verses from the Bible. This is one of my favourite songs by them and I'm far from a Christian so it had to be one of the songs to go really in-depth with. Would love your thoughts on the essay if you ever get the time, especially since you mentioned that there doesn't seem to be a different way to interpret the song. Love your reactions 🌸

Yeah, I think you’re right that he’s calling out god. There are a LOT of TøP fans who hold to the conviction that Tyler is a Christian and his music reflects that. Personally, I’ve always felt that it is much more complicated than that. The thread of his lyrics across all his albums to me represent conclusively his lifelong struggles with the faith that he was raised up with and the doubts that plague his psyche. Typical Christians don’t challenge their faith. They blindly believe without (sincere) question. Tyler’s music to me has always celebrated the idea that you can’t blindly walk around believing stuff that you can’t backup with sound reason. Much of his music only reflects Christianity when he puts his mind away and just resorts to the faith which he grew up with. But to me his evolution tends to imply other possibilities. Particularly when you consider that the pain anguish and despair that many Christians (or ex-Christians) have is a direct result of the faith itself-were the faith never instilled from childhood in the first place, the source of those emotional baggages wouldn’t have existed in the first place. 🙄 I tend to think he no longer qualifies as a Christian, per se... that’s not to say he doesn’t believe in God, but I don’t think he holds to the tenets of Christianity as a faith basis any longer. 🤷‍♂️
@BryceFender
@BryceFender 3 жыл бұрын
To me, it seems like all of their songs for the most part up to present day have to do with faith. It’s subtle, but it’s everywhere. A true Christian doesn’t blindly follow or believe, because of Gods Grace their hearts have been supernaturally changed and they have a personal relationship with God that keeps them living to spread the Kingdom. I think Tyler talks about this a ton in “Holding On To You.” ‘Not anymore, flesh out the door’ ‘You should take my life you should take my soul.’ ‘Entertain my faith’ etc. The whole ‘born again’ concept seems to be explored in the entire song. It’s truly natural and healthy for a Christian to question the Bible, God and their beliefs, but a truly saved and born again Christian will never look back - and I don’t think the boys have either. I’ve noticed that in any of their songs whenever Tyler says “you” for the most part, he’s talking to God. Take “Fake You Out” for an example. Who is he faking out? It’s like when we constantly fail as Christians to “go and sin no more.” ‘I’ll fall down and I’ll break down, and I’ll fake you out.” It’s fascinating honestly to fall in love with this bands music, do a double take with the lyrical content, then realizing it’s all about the struggle as a Christian? At least it’s how I view it, and others are of course welcome to have their own interpretations. Just makes me hype, that’s all. Be well :)

Lance, I agree Tyler struggles a lot with his faith/doubts, and I feel it causes much pain. I am athiest so the religous songs never hold as much meaning for me. But there are some songs, which I feel could go either way, but the religous side has been played up too much in lyric reviews such as Genius. Such as Holding On To You. I will comment to another post. Please check ou my thoughts (now postered below).
@girlwithnoname956
@girlwithnoname956 3 жыл бұрын
@@BryceFender Holding On To You need not be strictly religious. In fact, Tyler provides an explanation on the origins of the song; this meaning should be given equal consideration than the religous label it has been assigned. Please reference Tyler's introduction to the song here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnOQaYWDitethqM Tyler wrote Holding On To You during a period where his former bandmates were starting to give up, and Tyler started to question if his dream was not supposed to happen. Tyler talked about his emotional struggle. I feel HOTY is, at it's core, about taking control of your life, and reaching for your dreams. "Flesh out the door " is getting his but in gear. "Swat!" Tyler is not just a passenger, he needs to fight to make it happen. But for Tyler, this fight is as much an internal struggle between self-belief and self-doubt (later named Blurryface). Reaching for your dreams, even when you are battling doubts, both external (Nick, Christ, industry) and internal (BF). The video dancers represent these dark thoughts in his head. To me, when Tyler sings "entertain my faith" he is asking his self-doubt to believe in himself, and "holding on to you" is him holding on to his dream to be a successful musician. And "flesh is all I got, not any more flesh out the door", who he is isn't who he has to be; he can be as big as his dreams, but he has to go get those dreams. I understand you have assigned a Christian meaning to the song. But even Tyler provides an early alternate meaning which is not religious, and I just thought you should be aware of this. I am not saying Tyler doesn't consider himself Christian. Just that, words like "faith", "belief", "flesh" ,"you", "lions", "son" "father" can also have non-religious meaning, even when used by Tyler. But "Implicit demand for proof" is most certainly religious.

@@girlwithnoname956 Thanks! I grew up a devout Christian, but haven’t believed in all that dogma for a loooong time. Is it ironic that I now find comfort and catharsis in TøP’s music? I appreciate your thoughts and completely agree that Tyler’s lyrics often have me swinging both ways. I think I kind of hear what I want and need to hear in his lyrics... what comforts me is that I do believe Tyler intends to write in a way that he wants his listeners to do just that.

I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” 21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my Hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

I keep looking up the lyrics cause I hear something different. I believe he actually says why would you let us use your name. Which to me seems to express puzzlement that God would even give people his name which he does to moses first. Even Abraham Isaac and Jacob never new God's name but when moses asks God to tell him who he should say God's message is coming from to the israelites God says to tell them I AM THAT I AM, he tells moses to say that I AM has sent him. To me the idea of God's name being his own existence is extremely interesting

I try to keep an open mind when trying to decipher their songs and not just immediately find parallels to Christian themes. So I will wait until to is blatantly obvious or stated that he is directing the meaning of the song towards God or his faith. That way I am not just saying "This song is about God" for every reaction unless I really truly feel like that is what was intended with it.
