i listened to “igor” for the first time by myself in my car while looking at the sky. tyler made an album that i think can be summed up in one word: longing. in one form or another, we have all felt longing. this album portrays longing for another person, a longing for time’s past, or longing for something that is gone. the production conveys emotions building to only explode, then retract yet again. i found myself crying when the album was over, only because i know i’ll never experience listening to this album in full again at midnight for the first time, looking at the stars. i guess i’ll always be longing for that experience.

I remember coming home after school. Flower Boy was my favorite album at that time, so I was unbelievably hyped for IGOR. As I remember I had a really hard week, with a hard ass exam on Spanish, so this was the perfect thing to make me feel better. I got me a pack of popcorn, and immediately started listening. I wasn’t feeling it in the beginning, but still mind blown by the production. Slowly, I started understanding what Tyler was talking about. The story almost seemed identical to a dramatic love/hate relationship I had with one girl, that lasted for the whole school year. We had fights, didn’t speak to each other, were both depressed for some time, avoided each other, but still loved. Tyler was almost speaking with my words. The chords, the almost crying vocals... Damn. This was the final note that ended that relationship. I went through it all over again. I couple days later the school year ended. I had my last glimpse of that girl, thanked everyone for all the years, and went home. It was time to move on, to leave this school, where I experienced all I needed to at such age. That’s the story of my favorite album.

Watching Tyler’s growth as an artist has been great. I was a pretty big OF fan and thought Tyler’s solo work was okay. But man Flower Boy and Igor are just something else. Flower Boy is one of my favorites of the decade and hit me close to home and this one is doing the same. It’s not quite on FBs level yet, for me, but it’s at least an 8/10. Can’t wait to see where he’s at in 5-10 years. Also Tabby, you left your sweater at my house. The album is about unrequited love. I know because I went through the exact same thing he's talking about and he hinted on how he felt about the situation on flowerboy and rose tinted cheeks. I hadn't been that into tyler after cherry bomb but he instantly became my favorite artist when flower boy came out because I realized how alike we were in our goals, aspirations and perspectives and how we've gone through alot of similar experiences and situations. Me also being a producer and having similar musical influences and ideas sonically the production combined with the message and collection of ideas and influences mixed into it makes album resonate with me on the deepest level of any album I've ever heard in my life. And outside of that it's simply amazing! I think he could be up for another Grammy this year and actually win it.

Actually he’s talking about a male romantic interest that he direly wants to be with but the other person hasn’t com out yet as gay. The other person doesn’t want to let go of his past (having a straight relationship) because he is scared of being judged while Tyler owns his sexuality and wants to display it to the world. Obviously by the titles and lyrics, this relationship goes bad because the other person isn’t willing to give up time for Tyler, leading to Tyler not wanting to be in a relationship anymore. At the same time, he constantly pleads the significant other to not leave throughout the album. This confliction really makes the album even more layered than it already was. Just wanted to point that out. Great video btw!

i think the album’s message will vary from person to person, and thats probably the intent. on my first listen, i understood it as him comparing himself to the caricature of igor as it relates to love. but its basically like IGORS THEME thru EWYRFYEUC is him coming to terms with being in love and finding out if the person loves him as well. then RUNNING OUT OF TIME and MAGIC WAND is him starting the relationship. BOY IS A GUN is him sayin that the person may not be great for him but he needs it anyways. this is also where i think he reveals that his love interest is male. he compares him to a gun in that the relationship is frowned upon as dangerous but tyler feels safe with his “gun” anyways. then PUPPET is where he comes to terms with the toxic nature of the relationship and how hes being manipulated. WHATS GOOD is him sayin fuck off. The last 3 songs are him dealing with the end of the relationship and moving on. it follows up to SFFB in that this is him getting used to the new mature version of himself presented on SFFB. first he told us “yo im growin up” and now hes like “yo what do i do now” and hes finding his way away from being “igor” and being violent and vulgar.
