The vocals hit me differently than they did Myke, I think. Given how emotionless or silly or out-of-touch-with-his-emotions tyler usually is, to even hear him getting in his feelings resonates hard, regardless of how eccentric his singing is. Kind of like that girl who always cries telling you about a breakup, vs the funny kid who's always making jokes muttering something about how he feels deep down. Sorry for the sexist example, but which one resonates more? I'd say the funny friend, even if it is a bit awkward and half serious and monotone. Look, I feel like Tyler has creatively improved more and more with each project he has released. Flower Boy was a peak, it was the best comeback Tyler ever had, it was Tyler honing in and mastering his craft. IGOR is new, it's a different approach to what Tyler always wanted to do, I wasn't big on immediately either, it grew me after a while and now I fucking love it. It's definitely raw and unrefined almost giving off an amateur vibe with the vocals especially, which is what he intended, it conveys the fragile and broken nature of the character he's portraying, and it flows amazingly well. If anything in two years time Tyler will come with something better than IGOR again, at this point I genuinely only expect great things from him, no matter what.
@topbackpodcast26154 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what Myke is talking about. Tyler's creativity was on 100 with this album, but the way he delivered his vocals was tamed for most of the album. Best example I can think of is New Magic Wand...when you listen to how visceral his voice was when he performed it at the Grammies, it brought new life and energy into the track..but on the album, the vocals are lackluster in comparison.

At least for me the vocals matched the vibe of the story because Tyler has always been insecure about his low voice, as he’s said in interviews in the past. As far as the story of the album, it’s all about his insecurities after falling for someone who doesn’t love him back. Tyler pitching up the vocals, at least for me, matched the theme of the album quite well, drawing away from his low voice and showing that this love of his is bringing his insecurities out.

At first I was disappointed in the album, but the song that made me get off the fence was GONE GONE/THANK YOU. I think that song was incredible and something in that song clicked something in me to appreciate the album. It was my bad because partially I was expecting a Flower Boy 2.0 or a straight up rap album, but when I let go of that convention and looked at it as its own unique sort of album it made sense to me. I must say, he did extremely well at crafting songs that are outside of his rapping comfort zone and created an amazing neo-soul album. Tyler doesn’t need to rap for this album to be great, this Tyler at his best in songwriting. Every instrumental is meticulously crafted, the lyrical theme is pulled off very well, and the album flows fantastically. No filler here, the album is a complete experience. I agree with Myke and B.. in my opinion this album would be good if Tyler wasn’t on it and a more vocally strong artist (like a Gambino) was on it. I listened to this multiple times and I can’t remember Tyler’s parts at all, only the features stick out to me the most. However, the production is amazing and Tyler is an excellent songwriter. I also think this album suffers from the same thing Syre by Jaden did where it’s a bit too influenced by other artists, it’s not as unique as everyone is saying it is. It’s only relatively unique because of the climate of music today.

To Myke’s point about Tyler not singing in a very pronounced way: I’m not sure if this was a purposeful move by Tyler, but I think the pitched, off key, and weak vocals make him sound INFINITELY more vulnerable and insecure on this album. This is the album where y’all should have spent way more time with this. This album was great when I heard it and got even better. This is a masterpiece in my opinion.

Personally I love this album from first listen conceptually and sonically and that’s from someone who never put on a Tyler album before and I feel like the real story and content and concept is in the production side of this album and the vocals just added more narration and context to the instrumentals

Rod @12:50, i pictured that episode of “Martin” when he and Gina broke up and he’s singin Shai’s “If I Ever Fall In Love” - that’s exactly what Tyler sounded like to me!!! “...AAAAND IF I EEEEEV!!!!”
@KIDJAAP4 жыл бұрын
I mean agree. the production was dope but the vocals just didn’t fit. I think his voice was okay on certain songs but his voice kinda threw off the production a little. Tyler said himself that a lot of the vocals was just references he lauds down for other artists to sing, but ended up just leaving his references on there.

Adler _ myke is bang on, such a boring R & B album, back to underground hip hop, bring on that Freddie Gibbs and Madlib
@steveharvey34894 жыл бұрын
@@matthalsey1346 how is this album boring? I like underground hiphop but if anything could be considered boring. its that. All underground type hiphop is verse, chorus, verse chorus, over a 4/4 beat pattern with nothing crazy going on production wise...that style has been done for 30 years..theres nothing really groundbreaking about it at this point

I agree with Myke on the fact of that Tyler didn't push himself with this album to new boundaries but I think what so many people, including myself, find so endearing about the album is that it feels like a Tyler album. Flower Boy was an amazing album, no doubt about that, but you could tell that he made it to appeal to a wider audience; even in that video where he's discussing FB he mentions that he was studying Max Martin and how he would make things appeal to the mainstream. This album feels like what all those melodic aspects of the early Tyler albums culminated into something great. As for his voice, I think Tyler sings in that sorta weak voice because it still is something that he has trouble with expressing. Alongside people like Charlie Wilson and Solange, I can totally understand his unwillingness to sing with passion out of a lack of confidence.

I must be a liar, Feefo, because I truly did love this right off the bat. The opening vibe of "Igor's Theme" really put me on-track to really rock with it. Plus, I was one of those people who didn't hate the mixing issues on Cherry Bomb so I think that really helped as well. It wasn't as out of whack as CB & it came off a lot like the mixing in an Ariel Pink or a Mac DeMarco record to me where it's not too difficult to hear the vocals but they don't overtake the production. Tbr, his vocals really just came off as another layer in the production to me. Really digging this project. It's been a couple of weeks so far & I genuinely think after the dust settles, this might be my favorite Tyler record.

Igor is amazing I really enjoy it. You can play this at the family reunion. But I do think that this project was mainly about the production. Also I feel like this was more of a compilation album were he did the production and his features provided the vocals on most of the songs.
@Pasicho5 жыл бұрын
I think it would interesting for Tyler to make an album with very limited vocals on his end. He already said he was interested in making scores for movies and stuff like that. He could other people that have better convey his message. After 5 albums it's pretty obvious that his voice is pretty limited even with effects.
@jefferyromero89805 жыл бұрын
I’m confused about their issues with the vocals, it’s no worse than Earls project last year some rap songs. I agree with feefo that this could be his best work. The narrative is too much of an emotional mess for what he is saying to be completely polished or nice. The production is what comes first in this album because it is what mainly sets the mood, not his vocals. In a troubled relationship you don’t always listen to one another that’s another possible explanation for this effect. The thoughts of the character are a complete mess they are well thought out or polished just like the vocals on the album.It was absolutely intentional the divide just comes from whether people enjoy it or not.

Nice review. I respect Myke’s views, of course, but Tyler defo pushed himself creatively in terms of the instrumental layering and transitions in a ton of the songs.

For sure my album of the year so far! Didn’t think he would release one near Flower Boy, but it’s definitely up there. Curious to hear what you guys have to say Edit: Can’t say I’m surprised. The only thing I don’t get is why would you want him to try and pretend he can sing really well when he knows he can’t? Wouldn’t that just make him sound worse?
@pskolart5 жыл бұрын
I think the major takeaway from this album is that Tyler is an ARTIST not a RAPPER. He's always been polarizing, it's no surprise opinions on this record are so 50/50. Both IGOR and SF/FB are top notch, great review conversation though!
