My sister was in a hotel pool on vacation talking to another guest. He (American) said I’m glad I live in the greatest country in the world. My sister said (“ oh so you’re Canadian too”). He wouldn’t speak to her for the rest of the visit. Very offended. My sister got a good laugh. As a Canadian she thought it was funny.

I lived in 4 different countries. I'm french and came to live in Canada in 1991. I feel at home and welcomed. I was offered a job in the US that came with a citizenship and I refused not once, but twice. I would fight any day for my adoptive people. The quebecers I know are incredibly proud and upstanding people. My kids were also taught the history of both France and England since it's important to know where you come from. This is in a public school. They learnt about Europe too and geography. Education is the main difference from the US.

I never mind though the people that go over-the-top in their displays of affection for their country. My only problem is when the person keeps insisting that they are "the best" at everything - without having any proof to back it up - except their own desire for it to be true.

As a Canadian I have come to the opinion that Canadians are generally patriotic, as in they love their country and want it to be the best and improve in areas that it can. Part of being Canadian is definitely knowing your roots. I remember speaking with a South African guy one day and asking where he was from (completely normal question in Canada) and he was obviously uncomfortable talking about his country of emigration until I explained to him that pretty much EVERY Canadian knows, and is proud of their heritage down to great grand parents. Yeah, maybe it's accurate to say that while we are all Canadian and follow Canadian culture, part of that is having a positive interest in a person's family heritage, as part of getting to know them. It's not seen as lesser to have recent ancestry elsewhere. My own parents are immigrants, and I've had friends whose families have been in Canada for centuries or longer. American patriotism is seen as over the top on an everyday basis. We don't decorate our homes with flags and banners, we don't wear the colours unless we are representing our country in an official capacity (ex: Olympics). Here is the actual definition of patriotism. “patriotism, feeling of attachment and commitment to a country, nation, or political community. Patriotism (love of country) and nationalism (loyalty to one’s nation) are often taken to be synonymous, yet patriotism has its origins some 2,000 years prior to the rise of nationalism in the 19th century.” As a Canadian I can tell you that I am very patriotic. That means I love my country and very proud of my homeland. That doesn’t mean I have to shove it down everyone’s throat. That’s the difference. Americans are arrogant and obnoxious about where they’re from and think that the world owes them everything. News flash, we don’t.

That's the problem with Americans. It's OK to be patriotic, but Canadians & likely the rest of the world know it in their hearts and don't need to shout it out everywhere they go. They think they're #1 everywhere & too rude & ignorant to see that they're not. Being loud & obnoxious doesn't make you the best. Just because they have one of the largest countries, one of the largest populations and one of the largest militaries, they think they can rule over everyone else. The rest of the world thinks definitely Not, especially when you have to Shout it out loud to be heard, lol 😂😅❤

8:15 "Remembering where you come from" This is about Can/USA's different cultural approaches to immigrations. The comparison is usually called "The Melting Pot, and the Salad Bowl". (You might have heard of these before). USA is like the melting pot; everything added is expected to blend into their new identity. "Welcome to USA! Here's your ball cap. Eat this hot dog, and be American with us! Forget your old culture; you're an AMERICAN now! See you at church on Sunday." Canada is the salad bowl, everything added doesn't change itself, but the combination of all the different colours included together is beautiful! "Hi, Welcome to Canada? Where are you from? Gosh that's interesting! Say, why don't you open up a restaurant with food from your native country? We'd love some new flavours to try. You're closing the restaurant every Thursday for religious observance? That's fine; we'll respect your beliefs, but maybe put out a sign explaining it so we silly locals don't wonder why?" Now that's obviously a big exaggeration to underline the different approaches to how we welcome new people into our countries, but the difference in attitudes is still distinct.

I was flying home from England. I was waiting to board the plane as a person who needs help boarding. I was standing because I was going to be sitting for a good six hours. The gentleman standing behind me kept complaining about how long it was taking for them to board a person in a wheelchair. Then he tried to push me out of the way. I very nearly toppled over. He didn't apologize even after his wife chided him for it because I was "too young" to be disabled. This was after spending ten days on a cruise being pushed around and cut off in line by Americans who also complained about there being a Canada Day celebration on board but went all out for the onboard America Day celebration. And wore Canadian pins, patches and tshirts around to be treated better around Europe. We were in France and my friend and I were looking to get tattoos. The French treated us horribly until they realized we were Canadian. Complete 180 turn in attitude. Though they still sneered at my broken Quebecois. I was happy to get home to Canada.

Americans wear their patriotism all over their bodies, shirts, bathing suits, hats. Canadians don't typically do that. Not very many Canadians fly flags off their house. The Canadians can relate to the curling reference, where in America it would be basketball or baseball. When you travel internationally Americans stand out. Instead of accepting how another country does something they want it to be like America.

Once on a vacation we were at a large ferry dock to watch the big ferry unloading all the cars and whatnot, and a group of American teenagers blatantly walked past all the signs about no civilian traffic, no swimming and whatnot and before they began jumping off the dock for a swim they turned around and shouted to all the people watching them “it’s okay we’re Americans!!” And jumped in the water. The transport officers got them out and escorted them somewhere but they never acted like they did anything wrong. Not sure why they thought being American made them above the safety rules.

As a Canadian, I wouldn’t say that Americans are generally over the top about their patriotism… Tyler makes a good point about how Americans fought for their independence from Great Britain, whereas Canada did not. I think if Canada had been faced with with needing to do that, we would feel a sense of sacrifice and solidarity with our fellow country people for this reason. To be honest, I am grateful to be born and raised in Canada vs. some other not-so-fortunate place in the world, but I am patriotic to my country for different reasons. Being grateful for freedom, for freedom of speech, freedom of religion, for opportunity to think, feel and act in ways that align with my values, to live in such a beautiful place… these are some of the reasons I am patriotic to Canada….

The US takes patriotism and nationalism to a whole other level. Very commercialized. Everything you can imagine has been turned into an American flag including underware ironically. Many Americans own their own full sized flags and fly them daily which i have not seen to the same extent in Canada. One thing you don't see in Canada like in America is things shaped like your province/state. Cutting boards, magnets, and other souvenirs regularly display the state image or are shaped that way. The U.S. has had a whole issue of coins with each state and a set of stamps released. Patriotism goes to the state level but i don't know the name for that. Had I been called an American, I would have revealed my lineage - but I have a feeling they already knew I wasn't. When I lived in the Netherlands I had an American neighbour who was big on celebrating holidays, especially July 4th. Lots of red, white & blue all over her home & yard. Being Canadian, I initially was a little weirded out by the excessive patriotism they would show, but came to accept that it was just an American thing. Even with the overdose of stars & stripes we always had a great time with loads of food, fun & friends.

What's weird about American patriotism is that they seem to think that patriotism means being loyal specifically to America. Like calling citizens of other countries unpatriotic if they don't love America or insisting that other countries should celebrate the 4th of July.

I’d say we are just as patriotic, but we don’t boast about it. On July 1st, we are also BBQ’ing and setting off fireworks galore, but we keep our celebrations to ourselves. We’ve no need to tell every other country that we’re partying.

I think in general your baseline Canadian culture is pretty chill and casual, and that spills over to patriotism. Lots of us are very patriotic, but it comes out mainly in Canada Day (eg the flags everywhere, fireworks etc). You'll see a bit of it on relevant holidays like Remembrance Day, and sporting events of course. Otherwise, it comes out in low-key ways, like pointing out any time a celebrity is Canadian, sharing Canadian things with people from elsewhere, or making a solid look of distaste when people make jokes about us being America Junior or the 51st state. That said, I think we do have a bit of a pattern of being chill until someone messes with us; we're generally pretty capable of bringing the fight if we need to. That's a form of patriotism too, haha. We'll step up when Canada needs defending in some way (whether verbally or otherwise), otherwise we think it's a bit cringe to make too big a deal out of it outside of relevant holidays or events.

To understand how American patriotism is viewed by other countries think of it as being exceptionally wealthy. American style “I could buy and sell you without blinking an eye.” Other country patriotism, quietly slips a little extra into a charity’s collection basket.” That is a little over the top to increase clarity.

As for knowing where you come from, English speakers know that they came from Britain, so it is a part of those born here that they remember their roots. We are, in fact, all immigrants except for the native cultures.

Wrong. Even the Indians were immigrants. They just arrived before the Europeans did.

@@terryomalley1974 evidently you are not aware of the latest discoveries. There is evidence that hominids were in North America 130,000 years ago, which is more than 100,000 years earlier than previously thought
