They supposedly have systems in place to ensure that they don't know whose cards they are grading...but those systems can all be cheated. Unfortunately human behavior will lend itself to being manipulated for money as we've seen with the trimming scandals. The market is prime for a new grading company to open. If these current companies don’t expand capacity we have a bottleneck across the board. SGC that I’ve crossed to PSA have always crossed with an equal grade. Good video overall bud. I do wish SGC would consider a new modern case maybe clear for modern era cards. PSA needs to expand their grading services. Turn rates are just crazy!

It definitely is. I would love to see a company incorporate more technology including a digital measurement of the sizes to ensure that there wasn't any trimming. It seems absolutely feasible to do in todays age.

Tyler Short agree even if you built in a set parameter of error. It’s going to be interesting to see how they rebound after this pandemic and if SGC continues to gather share. Last BGS label is premium black, gold, silver. Very detailed but sometimes has a kinked on corner when being installed. Case is nice and thick but cracks easily. Phantom cracks shows up. It's great to have a 3rd option for sellers to get their cards graded.

Great Video! very well presented. Extremely important information for the new collector. It does have a bit of a "modern card" bias though. In my opinion when it comes to vintage/junk wax era cards, SGC is far superior to BGS in every way. Another pro SGC point is that they seem to be the least impacted by all the recent fraud/trimming scandal BS thats been going on. They also have the absolute best customer service. Obviously, I have an SGC bias, but I do collect and submit to all three.

Interesting, thought provoking take. Not very familiar with SGC, but have heard they may have the strictest grading standards. As far as PSA and BGS are concerned, there are plenty of examples with both companies where their subjective grading opinion on a card is erroneous. It's not only the company, but the individual grader(s) at the company that is grading your card that matter. Grading is just an opinion. Don't get the opinion you want, resubmit, or send it to another company for a second opinion. The only data point that should matter is the condition of the card. Don't like BGS 9.5, cross it over to PSA or SGC. If collectors and investors want to discount the cost of regrading, I can see a small price discrepancy for the same level of card. But why would anybody spend an extra ~$600 for the same or similar conditioned Mahomes? As I commented on Philmington's SGC video, I enjoy the BGS and SGC arbitrage opportunities, but for the good of the hobby, I hope the price levels of same conditioned cards from different grading companies eventually even out.
@heytigerfists4 жыл бұрын
Once the market shows a clear preference in resale prices for a grader, things can stack up against the other graders pretty decidedly. That's what happened with CGC in comics, depsite their long turnaround backlog. It'll be interesting to see what CGC can do, entering into sports card grading. Personally I despise them because they love inserting themselves into markets with gimmicks, manufacturing collectables out of unremarkable items with "limited edition" labels, etc..

@TylerShort4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin and appreciate the question. I will generally submit the value as the raw card value. Given that you don't know how the card will grade (usually), I enter all of my valuationas as the raw card value. If you are confident that the card will grade gem mint and the valuation difference between the raw card value and gem mint is large, I will pick a value somewhere in between. Ultimately the valuation mainly impacts the insurance amount that PSA will charge you once the order is complete, so it's in your benefit to have the value be high in the event that the order is lost or damaged.

I have a good chunk of my cards graded by the big three: SGC, Beckett and PSA. I'm primarily a vintage sports cards collector. I've taken my vintage Beckett (BVG, NOT that BCCG crap! But BVG) cards into a few different card shops and I've had the clerk tell me that BVG isn't as respected as Beckett (the Beckett for the newer post 1980 cards). I then have to explain to these clerks that the 1960s and 1970s BVG graded cards I'm showing him never had the opportunity to get graded by the "new" Beckett b/c they're older than 1981. It's beyond belief that I've had three clerks at 3 different shops over the last five years make this mistake: essentially thinking that old pre 1981 cards can get graded by "new" Beckett when they can only get graded by BVG! It drives me bonkers!

That from my experience does not affect the card. Some cards and sets have a natural bow to them based on their production. It will flatten out once sonically sealed. So long as there are no surface wrinkles or creases, you should be good to go.

I will do this a lot, but my strategy that I've outlined in previous videos is to arrange the cards to be presented to the grader in order of worst to best. Psychologically, a grader might think after seeing what they perceive to be a mint 9 card...if they see something better than a mint 9 card, it will bode well for the rest of the cards in the order. Not sure if I'm explaining it that well but I do this in every order

I don't collect much modern and I have never submitted a card for grading but, I've been collecting investment graded Vintage HOF'ers (centered) for the past 10 years.... the eye appeal on the Pre WW1 stuff must be there because of the vast number of lower grades. I am tough on grading and very picky. MY Conclusions: SGC from 1800's thru 1915...that's where they initially developed their reputation. The old label SGC is preferred....I don't like SGC's new label. The grade letter is too big. But, I'll get a PSA if no SGC's available. SGC/PSA from 1916 thru 1941 (Doesn't matter) 1947 thru today it's PSA. The BGS case is too thick and that blurs the card somewhat. I don't buy much modern.....maybe someday, though. from the 1800's thru 1941 SGC and PSA prices are very competitive. From 1947 to modern...the PSA holder is the better investment over time. SGC will have a difficult time in PSA territory. What do you think?

I have submitted thousands to each and Beckett has a far better case with more protection and charge way less then PSA. PSA will charge you 5,000 to grade a single card, lol, pathetic. I see PSA10's that would not even grade a BGS9 on ebay. I sent 150 PSA 10's to Beckett for an upgrade, and 3 came back as BGS10's, the rest did not, and I pre screened my PSA 10's. When comparing resale value you should compare a PSA 10 to a BGS 10 not a 9.5.
@TylerShort3 жыл бұрын
That's not true. PSA 10 = gem mint. BGS 9.5 = gem mint. BGS 10 = Pristine. PSA does not have an equivalent grade for a BGS 10 pristine, hence the gold standard comparison being and always has been PSA 10 vs BGS 9.5

Tyler whats crazy is you recorded this video only less than 8 months ago and look how you valued the MJ 1986 Fleer at only $48k and now they are selling for over $110k.
