The PSA shutdown was an opportunity for companies like CSG and SGC to get a lot of graded cards into the market. The more they do, the better they’ll do longer term. I’ve noticed many more CSG and SGC slabs on eBay and at the card shows here in Southern California. I’d keep the $25-30 card grading and hire/develop more graders to expand the card grading business if I were either CSG or SGC.

I tend to use psa 9 prices as a barometer for the value level of bgs 9.5s and sgc 10s. When that price gap gets close is when my interest goes up on those secondary slabs. But the "SGC is undervalued" drum has been beating for a while now with little change in actual comp ratios to psa. So I dont exactly believe that they will significantly close the gap. But anything is possible and if you like the look of sgc slabs and arent overly focused on resale value then I do think it's a solid way to build a cost effective collection.

I personally like PSA, and like a majority people have lot of PSA in collections. A lot of new collectors in the past 3 years entering the hobby may not know SGC has been around for 23 years and always played 2nd place to PSA. With the initial covid shut down and now the backlog shutdown still in process, it does not give me much hope that SGC will ever surpass them or gain ground. A lot of videos trying to draw a comparison, but without the gem rate/date of the other companies, it will be hard to judge but fun to speculate. To each their own, collect what you like and have fun. ✌🏼

PSA is more Popular as far as buying and selling. Grade wise they are about the same hit or miss. $200 for a PSA grade and $150 for Beckett grade is the only difference with grading and sports companies. About $30 for SGC $25 CGC . That’s where things change but if you have a really nice card I would definitely send it to PSA but a grade 10 is a grade 10 at the end of the day . For personal collection I would prefer a PSA 10 over anything but wouldn’t complain with a grade 10 of another company if I love the card .

Thanks for the content Dustin. I am starting to get more and more convinced that SGC catches up to PSA in terms of populairity and slabbed value. SGC’s grade 10 might be a tougher grade than PSA. The tech that SGC uses to determine card surfaces is the same as what forensic crime labs use to determine document forgeries. I firmly believe that SGC grading is legit. The market is just not yet convinced as such. My opinion about SGC has changed drastically since the beginning of 2021. I have several cards (vintage to ultra modern) waiting to grade. Original plan was to wait it out with PSA, but SGC is looking more and more intriguing by the day. Staying patient. The sucky part of this is that SGC appears to be having success at the $30 price point for grading. Guess that we will never see $12-$15 grading costs ever again. I agree with you. It’s good and fair to compare the graded card prices of those 2 companies PSA and SGC, only if the card prices are within a few weeks or a month time period. This is because sports card prices are very volatile, or they go up and down in a few weeks or months time frame. This is very true during the crazy months of Jan. to March this year when the prices went to the stratosphere, and then went down one to two months later. It has started to go up again lately. Other comparisons I’ve seen on youtube are showing that SGC graded card prices are about 10 to 30% lower than PSA graded card prices within a month or less time period. .

I don’t know if people are just wanting perfect 10 but 9.5 is an awesome card. On a avg Kobe rookie no matter what brand it is, sells around $129.00 but a 9.5 in a bgs slab goes for 5 times has much.

SGC is NOT a tougher grader than PSA. I have repeatedly sent cards to SGC that I weeded out of my PSA pile as potential PSA 8s or 9s that were graded SGC 9.5s or 10s. They are harder on centering, that is true. So you won't hit an SGC 10 with a poorly centered card, which does happen at PSA. But if you have ANY type of noticeable surface or corner issue, PSA is rarely going to give a 10. Whereas at SGC, as long as your card is centered, you can get 9.5s and 10s with flaws that would lower the grade more at PSA. It depends on what you value in your sub-grades, but I'll take a slightly off center card with a perfect surface and corners rather than the opposite. And the market seems to agree.

No matter how much inconsistency PSA shows, the amount of dick-riding fanboys who will come out in droves to defend them is astonishing. PSA was first, and their registry is untouchable. Their pop reports mean absolutely nothing for the most part, but no matter what PSA is king because collectors promote it that way. As long as other channels keep reiterating that, and saying "PSA 10 is the baseline", it's going to stay true. People talk about eye appeal, but they don't dare want to be caught with their pants down holding a beautiful PSA 8, that is probably only an 8 because the grader had a bad day or was a new grader scared to give something a 10 and get clowned in QC1/2. WIth Nat Turner's group owning Goldin too, it won't take long before they slowly remove the selling of all other graded cards, included pre-war SGC graded stuff from their high-end auctions. SGC will forever be marked as 3rd place until key people in the hobby make a push for it to be more. Period
