Shells are close to teeth in structure, just on a thinner/fragile scale in that fluoride will harden them. If the mouthwash had fluoride, that would be what caused them to become harder.

As another comment stated, I believe that was more of antiseptic mouthwash, not fluoride. Cus the one he used had alcohol in it, and alcohol kills bacteria. They don't really put too much antibacterial stuff in fluoride wash. The fluoride just get fluoride on your teeth which the calcium absorbs and strengthens your teeth

Teeth and eggshells have similar chemical compositions so they react with similar things. Most mouthwash have fluoride in them which strengthens teeth and in your experiment strengthened the eggshell. There is another experiment which you rub toothpaste on one half of an egg and leave the other half clean and you soak the egg in vinegar for some time and after that you'll see that the side with toothpaste is as solid as it was but the untouched side is damaged by the vinegar. Which shows how important toothpaste is for proper dental health.

@@JohnCena8351 yep... Assuming that the mouth wash had some fluoride in it, it would coat the egg shell. This is similar to when dentists paint the fluoride gel on your teeth. Other possible explosions, the alcohol reacts with the calcium carbonate in the shell to create a stronger composite, the way he tries to crack the egg is the least efficient method. A normal egg may do the same. Hope this clarifies your question, John.

It replaces some of the carbonate with a compound that includes flourine and since flourine is much better at forming strong bonds due to its electronegativity it makes the egg shell harder by replacing all the weak bonds.

@@AM-du7si Fluoride doesn't work at all. At least not with such a small amount. The "strongest" Listerine mouthwash has about 450 ppm flourid in it, while you need at least 1000ppm for it to have some minor impact. It's just a placebo dude.

The chemical bond and the overall Material structure are 2 differente things. Diamonds are very hard, but only consist of carbon, which doesn't have a very strong electronegativity.
