Okay, so -5 bar is sufficient to vacuum seal a mason jar for food preservation. You have to understand that the mason jars are intended to be filled all the way up to just below the rim, so there's very little air to begin with remaining in the jar when you preserve food. The intended purpose of this vacuum sealer is to remove a very small volume of air, and you're doing tests with a relatively much higher volume in comparison to the intended use.

So from what I know about canning and vacuum sealing food. That device isnt really meant for 'long term' or permanent storage like you would use for preserving food. Its made more for making your food last a little longer than normal. Its basically a 'vacuum sealer' but for Jars. As long as you know that before using it, its a pretty good product. Just dont expect what you put in it to last for years. Just Months.
@notreallydaedalus6 ай бұрын
It helps in a couple ways. First, it seals the jar, keeping humidity and oxygen out. A little O2 in a jar won't do much, but a free exchange of air will provide enough O2 over time to let things go stale/rancid. Any sealed container does this, but a jar is very good at maintaining the seal over a long time. Reducing the amount of air inside is a small but real improvement over typical Tupperware.

If I'm not mistaken it's the boiling process that makes the canning last so long as it kills off all the bacteria and the sealing process is to confirm it's sealed.
@vensakarakorwien57685 ай бұрын
both. Boiling will kill the bacteria that are there, but the seal will prevent any new bacteria entering. Technically that old boiling technique is also there to help with vacuum, as bottles are closed right after they are filled and then they should be slowly cooled down (to prevent glass shattering). So that cooling down of the liquid part will make the weak vacuum and finish off the proper sealing process (the covers will slightly bend inwards).

@Papierflugzeug956 ай бұрын
The reason the vacuum sealer doesn't pull a full vacuum is pretty simple, and you'll see why if you put water in there. If you put water in a full vacuum, it will boil - until enough vapor has been created to bring the boiling point of water high enough again (i.e. it will increase the pressure). With mostly liquid in there, creating a full vacuum is impossible. The liquid will just keep evaporating to keep it at an equilibrium anyway.

It is dumb, you can buy just an auger and a battery powered drill and do the same thing. I suppose if you don’t own a drill and not a handy person, buying an all in one unit might make sense. When planting bulbs you can have a lot of small holes to drill, you can get package of bulbs with 75 or more bulbs so an auger can be very handy.
