What do you think of prescribed burns vs mowing? Maybe enough there for a video topic.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmeryou lose a lot of nutrients in a burn
@AmbientCityFarm9 күн бұрын
@@MeredithFarms You also destroy a lot of broom sedge seeds but it's only a part solution for a perineal problem. I have seen studies that are more focused on Nitrogen loss and leaching. For pastures, I have seen studies that recommend burns 3-5 years or if a field is 50%+ infested with weeds. There seems to be a ton of pros and cons. We are really new to all of this and I love seeing both sides.
@MeredithFarms9 күн бұрын
@@AmbientCityFarm once you fix the PH usually the broom sedge will go away…other grasses will out compete it. Another thing with burning, if you get a rain at the wrong time you could have lots of erosion

I always enjoy watching the videos. I would definitely dig that wet patch out for a pond. If there's one thing I've learned over the years it's better to work with nature than against it.

A little potash along with that lime will help with the broom sedge.

I know it would be costly but I would get an all natural weed and feed for those fields. It's has to be more cost effective and make it a useful pasture.

lol....the words all natural and weed killer are a tough find together my friend....it just takes time to get the Ph corrected, once that's solved the grasses will come in and choke out the weeds

Have you thought about running some tile in that wet spot to help it dry out if its possible??? Luv ya's from Kentucky!!!
@StoneyRidgeFarmer8 күн бұрын
I've considered it, but honestly it's not really worth the effort for this small of a plot....I'd spend tens of thousands to gain 2-4 acres
@gungadinn3 күн бұрын
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Tens of thousands? Provided the pasture is fairly rod free, a larger Ditchwitch can easily make 3-4 500 foot plus runs in a day. Dirt Perfect built a tile plow he pulls behind a Cat D850 dozer. He does a lot of work for one of his local farmers,aka Farmer Chris. DP has probably installed a couple of miles of tile for Farmer Chris this year.

What’s broom sage? Did you plant it?
@StoneyRidgeFarmer8 күн бұрын
broom sedge is a grass that grows in poor acidic soils, it's pollinated and seeds blow in the wind. Doesn't need to be planted, it just grows where the seeds blow and the soil is poor. Correcting the Ph of the soil will allow other grasses to push/choke out the broom sedge. Just an indication of soil conditions and acidity in the soil that needs correcting. The cure is Lime

I have been doing what u r for 30 yr now. Started with 300 ac of burned out potato land Just as bad as ur tobacco land. I had me some money so i could live off it til the farm produced. Did not show profit for first 5 yr then it took off when my first partner bought in. Today there are 13 adults with 7b kids working about 6800 ac that we either control or own. Always on the look out for more at right price. can care less about what it is just right price. 18 mo ago paid a little over 1.5m for 120 ac and another 300k for the buildings (big old 15 room farmhouse build around 1880 with barn and out buildings. Why buy apart. B/c that is how they sold it. This is beautiful bottom land that is flooded ever yr and so get more top soil on it. Ya cost me S13,000/ac
