Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is a carefully managed investment portfolio to enable Saudi Arabia to diversify its economy revenues, in order to move away from oil. This project is called 'Vision 2030' and is driven by the global effects of climate change.
The PIF invest in a number of industries and companies that include shipping, renewable energies. entertainment, hospitality and tourism. In a drive to increase their populations interest in sport, they have had desires to purchase a Premier League club for many years. For this reason, they chose Newcastle United, based on the clubs potential for massive fan interest, both locally but potentially globally. A successful Newcastle United will generate huge revenue streams in Saudi Arabia amongst its population, as they invest in their own football infrastructure.
The current owners have made it clear that they are not the owners of the club, but the custodians. The inference in this statement is that they are passing through. At some point in the future, 'ownership' of the club will change hands. To me this could conceivable mean 20 years or so.
Our new owners have made it clear since they purchased the club in October 2021 that we are a long term project whereby they hope we are challenging for the Premier League title in 5-10 years. Amanda Staveley has gone on record to state that their immediate concern is to build the foundations of the club through a state of the art training facility and our academy system.
She states - "To reach the top of the premier league, you don't just need great players, you need robust, strong foundations and we have to build them". This will take a few years to come to fruition.
Back in March 2022, Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley stated in an interview with 'The Athletic' that they wouldn't be building a stadium somewhere else and would look to extend St James' Park to 60-65K, once other larger objectives have been fulfilled. They will then work closely with Newcastle City Council to try and achieve this. It's my view that they will look at expansion around the middle of this decade.
It's from these fundamental pledges and economic positions that I draw my opinions on a gradual growth of the club and that they won't be 'throwing' money at the club to expedite perceived success as quickly as possible. I don't believe they will make astronomical financial decisions in regards facilitating stadium expansion either. That means I don't believe they will spend potentially billions on attempting to relocate Leazes Terrace (for example), in order to increase our capacity by around 15 - 20K seats. It makes no economic sense to their wider objectives under Vision 2030. Neither do I believe that they will seek to compromise the history of our city, for stadium extension objectives.
I attempt in my videos to be balanced and see these complex circumstances from different positions that consider, planning, development, history, heritage, conservation and politics.
I enjoy well thought out and balanced views and I'm always looking to learn new things. My opinions are my own.
In this video I discuss the possibilities of expansion of St James’ Park but I reveal a shocking development that could play a significant part in any future decision.
I record the video in the beautiful Grade I listed building Alderman Fenwick House on Pilgrim St. I also talk briefly about its history and if you'd like to book the venue for a business, social, or creative need, you can visit their website www.afhouse.co.uk
Please excuse the typo re Charles Dickens. He visited in the 1850’s not the 1950’s.
Thank you for taking the time to watch

Sir Edward of the Tyne, another gem, your videos are head and shoulders above all the other contributors when it comes to depth of knowledge and information, not that they are bad just you really are that good. I'd love to see the video of the training ground plans so bring it on. I'm sure the owners will already be fully conversant with what they can do with our stadium and will be ready and able to go as soon as the oppurtunity arises. Mrs. Williams seems to have a grasp of the situation re Leazes Park and I'm sure the owners would be in favour of helping re-develop the park if it brought about sensible conversation for St. James expansion.

im glad to see people are being realists about this and not just shooting down preliminary ideas at this point. not being from newcastle (or the UK) but a huge toon fan for 25 years, i never realised how much green space there is around the ground. i had, stupidly, assumed it was all built-up. so there are plenty of opportunities.

Very interesting and professional presentation. As a Tranmere supporter on the Wirral, I hope the 'expansion' is agreed to the mutual benefit of all concerned parties in Newcastle. 80,000 Geordies singing & cheering on 'The Toon' -- now that is something to look forward to.

Hi Eddie, great video as per usual with a lot of interesting facts. The football club has a big problem with rebuilding, especially as they are hemmed in on 3 of the 4 sides. My thought which I have shared with you on a previous occasion would to contact the owner of the land that the current Arena sits on, and do a deal where by the new SJP is built there and once the old SJP is pulled down, the land can then be given to the person who currently owns the Arena site for his future development.

I suppose that if the pitch was allowed to be moved 20 metres to the NW and then the stadium redevelopment to fit 80,000 supporters and in return for the permission to do this, given it would be intruding into Leazes Park they could maybe give a very significant donation to improve and help maintain Leazes Park.

I could see some of the ground being bought back by Reuben brothers and The Gallowgate being expanded (using crane style tech like Bombanera or Bernabau) by 10,000 seats. On top of that, safe standing to take it closer to 65,000. Then the last stand have the San Siro style structure with huge new screens (like Sofi stadium) for advertising, VAR etc. I am a United fan, but this will be the best club stadium in UK if that is done, and it is very achievable. Don't need to move anywhere.

I think 80,000 is unrealistic at that location to be fair, given the constraints and extra size needed to find space for 28,000 extra seats and with all the surrounding areas, i think you could squeeze 65,000 in the same footprint, but 80k would have to be a new site in my opinion
@TynesideLife

Hi Eddie, thanks for the link, well watched, as Marion says She is more than willing to sit down and have the conversation so she is open to dialogue and she is 1000% right that fans shouldn't be priced out, let's not forget our new owners have very very very deep pockets and anything at present in redevelopment plans is more than achievable, one good thing for the gallowgate end is the metro tunnel is already in place, so laying fresh foundations wouldn't be an Engineering problem and fully refreshing the gallowgate end with a probable steeper tilt and taking away the main road or even keeping it ala Ajax style is also more than achievable, you love history, I love Engineering and architecture old and new so will be very interesting to see what comes in the coming years....but for now let's just keep buzzing for the new season and a season of hope and optimism and hopefully some form of success.....would love a cup final and hopefully dust down the cobwebs in the trophy room.....HOWAY THE LADS 💙⚽️🙏🏼

Great message Sean and glad you enjoyed it. I’m really fascinated in planning too and the law around these things as it all ties into history, heritage and conservation. I also take a healthy interest in what life looks like from different angles. Just because something may be possible in engineering terms, that doesn’t mean it’s what’s best for Newcastle as a city. There is also an equal volume of Newcastle residents who see the stadium as a problem and may fiercely resist any applications. Life looked exclusively through a fans eyes will paint a distorted picture of reality. You’re right, the PIF have deep pockets but they’re an investment fund with a very large portfolio in transport, renewable energies, tourism and now of course, football (amongst other things). We are just one small part of a very large picture for their own economic diversity streams. Check out my video as to why the sovereign wealth fund bought us. 👍🏻 Saudi Arabia’s purchase of Newcastle United isn’t all about us kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJLHf52VjrCHf7s

Look money talks and Newcastle have won the biggest lottery ever so I can’t see a problem. It’s just a matter of options that the council agree to. There’s only one club in the city and the council should be supporting the idea of expansion not blocking every idea because eventually it will benefit everyone in the city. I’m a staunch West Ham fan but being married to a lush Geordie lass who only sees the black & white stripes of the toon I have grown a liking for the club. All the best for the future 👏🏼👏🏼⚒

Great video Eddy, it will certainly be interesting to see what happens from here in terms of SJP because it is nailed on for our owners to want to expand either the stadium capacity to 80k or build a new stadium but question is where? I think they will just have to keep SJP where it is for the time being. Maybe they will have to reduce capacity temporarily while they redevelop?
@phil1721

excellent video backed up by extensive research. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise as a full gallowgate extension would have still limited capacity to just over 60,000 with the same limitations of the tiny east stand. In practical terms a move north will result in demolition of the whole stadium but the idea of moving the pitch north-west 10-20 metres into the milburn/leazes is more probable as the club can still retain a big chunk of the existing structure. Also the reason why I think this will be a more favourable solution is that they may be able to do it bit by bit without having to play elsewhere especially if they could limit attendance to just season ticket holders and away fans (depending on premier league rules) St James' Park seems to have a bit more room than most behind the goals and touchline which is also space that could be utilised however I've heard this can affect it as a venue for big competitions (Anfield can't host Euro 2028 for it's limited space around the pitch) One thing i've noted with this option is that the stadium is going to be far more compact, but with the additions of 3 far larger corners and a bigger east stand would really bulk up the capacity even if we'd be losing the first section of the milburn/leazes for the pitch move. If we did have to find somewhere else to play for a couple of years I think supporters would rather travel to Murrayfield in Edinburgh rather than share with the mackems. As for gateshead I believe the capacity is only just shy of 12,000.

Comprehensive video on the possible future redevelopment of SJP and the future use of Leazes Pk Ed cheers. Thought it telling that attitudes towards retaining Leazes Pk in it's current form was more relaxed than 25 years ago due to it's poor maintainance. Surely a like for like land swap a demolished SJP converted into a beautiful well funded park area would be a win win. Leazes Pk is the only location we'd all feel is still affectively SJP aka the new White Heart Lane. Same pubs, walk to the ground etc. Keep up the good work Ed. Brilliant podcast Eddie 👏 architects are currently pulling together plans for a 70 k and 80k stadium alternative on Leazes park site ( not the Moore land SJH intended ! ) they have hired a politely lobby group to work with various groups to help. The intention is to replace parkland (grade 2 listed) on current SJP site. PS : would love to see a podcast on trading ground plans at Park Lands 👍

I honestly think the arena area is still viable. Although it’s been earmarked for residential development with Newby and Bellway homes. Developers will often sell for profit without having to lay a single brick…. Builders do this all the time…. Newcastle City Council Will off set the loss of an area earmarked for residential dwellings ie loss in residential council tax, against the entire cities economy getting a massive boost if the capacity is brought up to 90,000 each match day. I’m more than confident the arena and surround area is the only place to be considered. 😊 Logistically it’s close to the railway station and access in and out of Newcastle is brilliant with the Redeugh Bridge and a dual carriageway heading West bound.
@TynesideLife
@TynesideLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Liam, you’re right about developers selling for profit. There is a major point to consider however. The owners have went on record stating that we’re not moving from St James’ Park. In order to carry out this arena land plan, they need to buy the land now and that would then be on public record. There’d be hell on from a huge section of our fan base and goes against what they’ve promised. They have huge projects currently ongoing with the training facilities and generally rebuilding the club. They’re clearly just not in a position to make huge stadium relocation decisions, especially as we’re just a club with potential at the moment. Man Utd snd Everton are great examples of throwing money at a problem and look where they are. We need to be competing at the highest level before we can consider building an 80k seater stadium. Imagine spending £400-500m on players over the next few years snd we’re sat in the bottom half of the table? The stadium would be half empty. I can’t say for certain Liam but it’s my firm view that the arena land is the right place at the wrong time. In addition, the city needs (desperately) more housing, far more than they need a relocated stadium. Just my opinions 👍🏻

Let’s look at Dubai, incredible architecture built on a desert, (Sand) designed by incredible architects & engineers. My suggestion is a magnificent stadium built spanning over the river Tyne, by the quiet area of the que side, where there shouldn’t be any issues. So basically the stadium would be built on a new bridge structure, spanning the river Tyne, this would be totally unique. I am serious!

I'm of the view that we should be using the building of a new stadium as a catalyst for wider regeneration. There are large areas of poor quality 1960s housing only a few hundred metres from the ground that could be utilised to deliver a mixed use scheme with new housing and other facilities . Increased density would mean that existing residents would all get a lovely new home alongside the new housing and this could even part subsidise the stadium costs like at Highbury. The area is a huge area of very low density housing that sits between Barrack Road to the North, Beaconsfield Street to the West, Westgate Road to the South and Diana Street to the East. This could transform West Central Newcastle. Maybe like East Manchester has been. The added bonus would be that we could continue to play at SJP.

Excellent presentation, whether you can get everyone to agree to a move into Leazes Park even the short distance you mentioned I am doubtful, it would be perfect solution that was possible. There will come a point where all options have been thoroughly explored and more importantly costed when moving will be the only rational answer on a business and increased capacity basis, is the only answer. If the success we crave and hope for arrives... the starting gun on this story has just gone off, definitely a marathon not a sprint.

@@TynesideLife Given the fervent opposition 25 years ago, fast forward now to the reality of the hard core environmentalists movement, I just struggle to believe that everyone will be so cooperative, whilst I would love to stay in a perfect world, I am also realistic, that if the growth and success of the club is being held back by our emotional attachment to its location then hard nose business decisions will have to be made.. This Cathedral on the Hill syndrome is actually fairly recent, until St John Hall arrived the ground was in a fairly awful state, I'm 67 and remember the East Stand being built and sitting in in 74 when home on leave. Sometimes the right decision is the hardest if we were to move my own caveats would be the new stadium must pay homage and reflect our spiritual home in design and furnishings no lego Stadium of Shite type. I admire your optism that they can move it to the North.. As for atmosphere in any new stadia I refuse to believe that 75,000 + Geordies can't produce a unique and intimidating sound. If the price to be a trophy laden club like Liverpool or the 2 Manchester clubs is moving, I can live with that.

Marion Williams knows the different environment that exists around were she lives now, vastly different from when she moved there, and to be blunt money talks, the Leazes park needs smartened up and new facilities, I am sure that can be sorted with amicable talks that could take place I'm sure of that, and fair play to Marion for totally understanding the situation, there is something for everyone if the expansion could go ahead.
