The Arisaka Type 44 is more like the 'general purpose' rifle adopted by major nations like, Great Britain, Germany, United States, Italy, Austria-Hungary, et al. The general purpose rifle of those nations were similar in length, roughly 44 inches long. The general purpose rifle replaced the long infantry rifle, the cavalry carbine, and the fusil or musketoon. For reasons unknown the Imperial Japanese Army declined to develop a general purpose rifle, which would have meant simply shortening the barrel on the standard Arisaka rifle, several inches. One reason might be that the Japanese military preferred the long rifle length which added to the 16 inch bayonet, made the Arisaka an effective spear and pike. The advent of the Type 44 may be an indication that the Imperial Japanese Army leadership were re-thinking their position on the general rifle concept. But at this advanced stage of the Pacific War, it was far too late to convert all Japanese standard infantry rifles into short, general purpose patterns. The best available course of action would be to produce what Type 44 short rifles could be had with Japan's limited manufacturing facilities remained.

Type 44 or type38 carbine for tha matter would've been a great "All Around" weapon of choice. Especially considering that majority of battles they fought were in jungle with close quarters combat.
It's hard 4 me to believe Sato-san can possess guns in Japan as their gun control is the severest in the world. And on top of that, this rifle is in pristine condition w even that famous Imperial Mum stamping on it. Never heard of Type 44 B4. I wonder if it's a re-production of recent make as his Colt 1911 pistol. Regardless, what a superb design and hi quality implementation. I particularly liked that IJA cavalry charge in the snow. Must b against the Russians in Manchuria? Thx 4 ur great presentation too. From the USA

Thanks for your comment. I actually live in PA. And my type 44 is the original. Just got lucky. It's a really nice shooter for sure
I'm sad I passed out on a type44 carbine at my local gunshow a few years back, It still had its dust cover and mum on it.

C&R in general went up in price like nobody’s business in the last few years but it’s not too late. Id say if you see any decent one, grab it. Don’t have to have the mum. It’s a really nice shooting gun.
