There is a black hair expert named Pamela Ferrell who I saw on a KZbin channel called Curly Hair crisis. She was the natural hair advocate who informed the Army to update their grooming regulations as it pertains to natural hair. Instead of the number letter system she has the circle hair type system and it makes a lot more sense

Love the 4C hair news content! Moving to washing my hair weekly is what has made my hair more "manageable." I agree that we walk a very fine line with over emphasizing "protective styles." I think it can sometimes (unintentionally) promote the neglect of our hair and scalp.

I don't think they're saying we need to hide and put our hair away. I do think two-strand twists, cornrows, flat twists, etc on our own hair are protective styles that keep our hair from tangling and matting. The style you're wearing is a beautiful protective style. When I wear my hair out in a curly fro for days at a time, the tangling happens very quickly. I don't think weaves, extension braids or wigs are necessarily protective styles. In fact, the weight, glues, and stress of the syles are quite damaging. I've never had issues with my edges because i don't wear styles that are damaging to my edges. Keeping my own natural hair clean, moisturized, in twists, plaits/braids or roller sets, and getting regular trims is most effective for overall health. Overexposure to UV rays is damaging to everything, including our skin, hair and scalps. There is nothing wrong with using some protection.

Thank you Jenn for sharing the article. Honestly, this thing of hiding our 4C hair under protective styles is being taken too far. Of course I will do it when I want to but it shouldn't be because it is too fragile to be out there. Like, there are all these suggestions of how to take care of our hair but for what really? To keep it hidden more than half the time? I think we can do better. I've found what works for my hair and I'm doing it, whilst also listening and learning and taking what may help where I have challenges. Thank you for taking the time to educate us and helping us understand more about our beautiful hair. I love my 4C goodness.

Here's my 2 cents on our 'fragile' hair: Its really important what you say and how you think about your hair, when I was a child and had to wear my hair natural my mom used to always say to me that my hair was beautiful and strong and I internalized that & believed that till present, she greased and braided my hair twice a month in beautiful styles using only my natural hair and I used only one shampoo brand for years which was something to reduce the smell of chlorine in the hair (I was a swimmer), I was surprised to find out from yt that we supposedly have the weakest hair type and for a minute I believed that and somehow that change in mindset seemed to cause a negative chain reaction of doing damaging things to my hair to over compensate for the fragility aspect of it, so i went back to the first thing I learned, starting with how I thought and talked about my hair, i realized my mom was right my hair is strong as I have tested it and it's quite resilient actually, and everything else I did to my hair fell in place and it's been flourishing ever since like before. There's a reason they repeat the word 'fragile'. Your body can give you what you put into it, what you expect it within reason it can do for you, hair is not vital for survival, so if you don't like it, if you expect your body to make fragile hair it can do that. If you're reasonably healthy there is no reason to expect that what comes from your scalp is weak hair. Also, I grew up swimming everyday, so my hair was not only wet daily but also had chlorine in it daily, yet it was thick and long so there's that. So i do what my mom did, with little tweaks here and there for what i like, and focus on my diet. And i don't listen to people) professionals/influencers who makes my hair type seem like 'less than' in any way.

Guess we all have a different definition for defined curls .. still hella confusing out here …. As a girl coming from locs after 14 years and getting to know my hair I’m out here seeking information of how to love and care for my hair …. I have a lot of shrinkage man shrinkage… tightly coiled … only when stretched its length truly known .. any who thanks for this Jenn… I’m “hair “ for it all 😊 No new information for most part.. sounds like what already exists on KZbin.. Putting the hair in sections is to manage the volume and prevents tangling .. not necessarily because the hair is brittle or what ever the article says … low manipulation and moisturizer is key I have come to find that out

Had to watch it twice! The Byrdie Team is full of recent hires and the potential 4Cers opted to wear manipulated styles which corresponds with the "fragile, prone to breakage" aka unwearable theme. Mensah would likely texture tax me if I sat in her chair! Definite conflict of interest to have the quoted experts also sell the recommended products. But cheers to a weekly routine and your fantastic glasses.

I’m glad I watched this because it was very informative. I have 4c hair and have only been natural a little over a year. I have kept lots of protective styles (primarily braids) because my hair is dry and won’t hold a curl. I’m learning that continuously wearing the braids is actually impeding my natural hair process including taking my edges. I’m learning how to love my hair the way it is!

So I think they should revisit that comment if they do another article. Jenn, I really loved this reaction video and look forward to all your vlogmas videos. I am a longtime subscriber with 4A hair and I know that this article specifically speaks about 4C hair but I reject any narrative that encourages us to constantly tuck away our Type 4 hair to protect it from the elements. I note that the wash and go was not suggested as suitable for long 4C hair and wonder why. Contrary to the view advanced in the article, our Type 4 hair is very defined and we rock beautiful wash and gos. You are solid proof that we do. They need to visit this channel.

Nope, I can't argue with 4C hair looking less visibly or clearly defined. I think it's semantics. You can't see the curls as easily. It looks matted or largely clumped together. It does break easily, especially when those knots form at the end and break off. I don't see a lot wrong with this article.

I’m a protective style natural. Braids, mini twists, mini braids (without extensions and small flat twists are my to go styles and my hair length is mid-back. I just don’t have the patience to detangle I just end up ripping through my hair. I make sure that I moisturize my hair while it’s in a protective style and make sure my hair isn’t too tight anyways this is great advice for 4c gals that wear their hair out more.

Please continue to speak the truth. ‘Maybe if you detangle more often you shouldn’t have a problem with shrinkage….’ I have 4a /3c - hell I don’t know kinda of highly dense hair. More Type 4 videos are still needed 2023 into 2024 please keep us educated, intrigued, and entertained, sis - I am subscribed and watching! My routine is weekly (shampoo and deep condition) Wash and gos are my style, but this winter I’m protective styling with wigs - to keep my hands out my hair. I’m seeing insane growth with this method. I agree protective styles can ruin your hair. Thus, I remove weekly and treat my scalp when needed. I agree this article came with nothing fresh. It felt like it came the common cons and fears of type 4 hair. I personally think our hair is strong and fierce, we just need to detangle weekly and shampoo and deep condition - plus style as chosen.

Great and informative video! 4c hair most definitely has curls/coils. Curls/coils are the basis of afro hair. I agree about washing hair regularly and abstaining from oils and butters as well as from heat. I have tinea versicolor as well as malasezzia folliculitis, so oils always cause my skin to break out. Taking care of black hair is simple once you embrace simplicity. I'd argue that you don't even need a comb or products (other than water) to take care of 4c hair. As for a hair scarf, it is useful for avoiding lint.

You're kidding me, right???? She is not projecting. What she said is facts. You do need to wash your hair regularly. Not watching your hair for months is not hygienic. Would you not wash your body for that long? There is no such thing as a protective style. All those styles do is damage your hair and scalp. Most women who constantly where them has receding hairline, and bald spots around their scalp.

I think the article is misleading and gives inconsistent information. It feels very Eurocentric although they used BIPOC authors. The verbiage in the article is low vibrational and approaching 4C type hair in a derogatory manner while exalting other hair types. If Byrdie’s mission is rooted in diversity and inclusion, they should be celebrating diversity and not vilifying specific hair types (which the industry has been doing for years). Additionally, there was no science included in the article, just subjective data/opinions and generalizations. My few cents
@evephillip2322
@evephillip2322 9 ай бұрын
@@Iamcrookedrib Honestly I don’t see it. Can you share specific examples? I mean, the article doesn’t actually say don’t wash your hair for 2 months. It says, if I remember correctly, wash your hair every two weeks. I can go 2-3 weeks without washing my hair when it’s in a knotless braids. Yes, my scalp will have a little buildup & probably be a little itchy. It’s not best practice for my hair but my hair doesn’t curl up and die as a result. It’s all subjective as each head of 4C hair is unique. You may be 4C high porosity & neglecting your hair’s needs. I can be 4C low porosity & doing all my hair needs to thrive.
@Iamcrookedrib
@Iamcrookedrib 9 ай бұрын
@@evephillip2322 exactly why science should have been included in the article. You can’t group all so-called “4C hair” into a category. There’s so many elements/factors of why the hair on my head behaves differently than the hair on your head. Licensed professionals should know this and should speak to this in an effort to dismantle the negative connotations around “so called 4c” hair, not further perpetuate the misinformation about the hair type. Nothing in the article celebrated 4C hair as a beautiful hair type. If you have time, go back and re-read the article as if you were a new natural embracing their tightly coiled hair texture as an adult for the first time. It’s confusing and inconsistent. I am not a content creator or influencer so I have no bias in my rebuttal from the perspective of monetization. I’m just a lay person that didn’t feel the article served any purpose other than pushing products and adding to an already misunderstood and touchy subject.

@JennJackson tbh after I stopped using raw oils/ butters and better formulated products my hair is a million times better. Millions of women dont know what they're missing out on 👀

Loved watching this! Couldn't stop laughing. It's just a surprisingly outdated look on 4C hair. Not knowing how to "manage" or "define" 4C is not the same as it lacking definition or bring difficult to maintain. And then the shameless plug of products....🫠 It's just funny that people still think this way and are just going to continue to think this way as long as articles like this are allowed to be published.

We should wear our "4C" hair in afros long short sculpted unsculpted twists braids (both in and out) pressed blown relaxed colored locked completely natural pinned up washing and going wild and free, because WE CAN 🤎

I've been thinking about this a lot and I do think some people still harbour a lot of antiblackness and disdain when they describe 4c hair, even if they don't actively realise what they are doing.

I agree. Some of the wording is problematic and we don't even realize it
