I have learned to patiently wait "up the road" for him to catch up. If I did not know MB or Enneagram I would have walked past him😢 Im so grateful for him. My theory as a 5 myself is that one cannot be loyal if you are not independent; and knowing how we are the most independent of all the Enneagram types we are the most loyal of all types aside from being the rational and intellectual type.

This video is so so accurate and not just in romantic situations. My mother is a type 9, and for other personality reasons quite insecure. She and I have often fought about her clinginess, even though I'm a thousand miles away I feel suffocated when she asks me about my day everyday. She also will tell me that I hate her because I don't tell her I love her as much or I don't start a conversation as much. You also were very accurate about not wanting water cooler talk. We don't have anything in common so that's pretty much all our conversation seems to be and honestly I'm not here for it. However, because I am very loyal and I do love people, despite what she says, I am trying to understand and adapt to her enneagram type, even if it's draining to me.

Yes ... but .... first, appreciate the energy and thoughtfulness you obviously put into this. The enneagram must be a labor of love for you! That said (as an INTP 5w6), the comments about arrogance need some calibration. In my experience, 5s seek security by being a useful expert - the set up you mention for arrogance (around 10 minutes in) is more likely to be grasped by an average to unhealthy 5 as a chance to seek acceptance and ingratiate themselves.

I think the toughest part of relationships is that even when I feel I am being open and romantic, it doesn’t always read that way to the other person in the relationship. I’m engaging in conversations and sharing myself in a way that I don’t do with others but dependent on my potential partner’s type or relationship experience, they might not understand how much of myself I am giving through those engagements and experiences.

Yes, I understand that in part. My son is an 8 and he doesn't want love the way I want to give it as a parent. It's hard!

@@gospelforenneagramI appreciate this. I’ve recently realized that I am an 8 that was in a really bad season when I mistyped as a 5. Either way, though, it can be hard to read my love in health or stress. 8s and 5s can be tough to pin down and share their love in ways that might seem small or a given to others. I cried in front of someone recently and still do not know if they realize how tough that was for me and how much I said “I love and trust you” just by doing that even though I couldn’t get those words out.

I’m having such a hard time dating a 5, because he doesn’t say ‘I love you’ until I say it first, which makes it feel pressured and disingenuous. When I feel like saying it - my heart is just full of love - I have to say it out loud. I don’t understand why he never feels that same way - makes me feel like he’s just not that into me. And maybe he isn’t! 😂

Aw man. Well obviously it’s not super helpful to correlate myself with a person I’ve never met and a relationship I know nothing about, but does it help that I have a hard time saying it as a 5 as well? It’s not that I don’t love the people around me, it’s just that it’s such a weighty word and I don’t want to overwhelm people with that weight. Maybe he takes you saying it first as the green light of, “okay, it’s not too much right now. I can say it.” Maybe have a gentle conversation about it? Let him know that hearing the phrase “I love you,” from * him first * is actually relieving to you? Sometimes laying it out like that, however simple, is very helpful for a 5’s complicated noggin.

Yes, there are many people who feel the same way you do. 5s just need to learn to come your way and express the love the way you want to receive it. Vice versa. You need to come their way which looks different. It's all about moving toward each other.

9 here, dating a wonderfully sweet and devoted 5. I also recharge with my alone time, so we have been able to give each other the space we need to thrive, while still deeply enjoying and treasuring our time together. We're both big time into wilderness backpacking, and I love that we can nerd out over that together and enjoy deep quality time on the trail together. Thank you for these tips! I think my takeaway is to come up with more interesting questions for him than just "how was your day?"

You described perfectly what a type 5 is ! I am one of them and I thought you were talking about me ! My main problem is émotion processing. Although I am aware of it, each time I feel overwhelmed with emotions, I become aggressive, filled with resentment. My love life has been a real mess ! When facing an issue, I retreat waiting for the other person to reach out. Otherwise you are definitely right when you say that 5s hate gossiping or shallow conversation. I don t need many friends and can do things on my own like travelling. Nevertheless I know I have to improve when it comes to socializing more ! Thanks for the great job you do ! What is your type ?

@YemimaHutapea yes for sure, I prefer it that way. I have dumped Exes lots of time because I felt insecure with them. For instance they answered my texts with a delay or forgot to do so but didn't mean to hurt me but I feel rejected in such cases. I know it is immature but I can't help it. At the same time, my ex husband was in love with me so much that it was suffocating for me. With a 5 you have to find the right distance and it is really hard I think to get the stuff right.

There's no way to really tell. I do think that are probably more 9s than any other type. Also, 4s seems to be more rare in my opinion.
