Maybe you've answered this before but wouldn't an e46/e36 m3 or even a 3 series be faster and cheaper to build than the gr86 track ratted? or is there a special reason you picked the gr86?

I don’t know a bunch about the BMW cars, so it’s hard to answer. I always like this platform and with the new motor it seemed pretty promising.

The GR86 unibody is almost 3x stiffer than an E36 M3. And a lot stiffer than an E46 or even an E90/92. With a lot less weight.

I’ve got to admit but yeah, the e36 m3 I’m particular. I got into driving mine only a year ago. But it’s crazy how much lap time you can get out of this car. I was considering brz/86 vs e36 m3 for over 2 years. I was comfortable with Subaru but going to my local track events there was just so many e36 and other bmw’s there. And there cheap. My car was 14k, about 5 less then the brz I wanted. Both were “track cars”. Specifically NASA TT cars. No cage but everything else in both. And I’m not the one to talk about horsepower and crashing my car. But it makes 230 wheel with a stock 160k mile motor, and I can get a donor 325i coupe for 2k and rebuild my car. The brz is just to expensive for me to recover from a bad crash

That’s a great looking GR86. Your car is definitely faster than that Civic as is. Both of you have your cars setup super tight. If you soften the damping on the front dampers you should be able to get more bite. Sure it feels nice and safe but you can see and hear the understeer. There’s definitely a few seconds on the table. Besides a bunch of corners below the limit, there’s corners where the understeer kills your momentum, and then on top of that those tires are getting slower after the first hot lap. With where you’re at driving wise, the Kumho V730 might be a better match for you. It lets your best lap to be on the 1st, 3rd, 4th or 5th lap. Good luck and have fun out there.
@phelpsgarage42025 ай бұрын
Thanks for your input! The car is softer than it was at one point and yes, I can see the laptimes come down. I just hate the feedback the car gives me, it’s like it’s lazy and numb compared to when it is super stiff, but obviously when it’s super stiff, it overwhelms the tires and kills Performance.

@JETZcorp11 ай бұрын
@@phelpsgarage4202 I prefer a centrifugal supercharger. A turbo is faster, but so is a Corvette. A centrifugal keeps the laser-crisp throttle response, adds more of that S2000-ish build-up that the 86 already has, and has superior thermal characteristics to a turbo or positive displacement blower. I've been looking at installing one on my NC2.
@phelpsgarage420211 ай бұрын
@@JETZcorp yeah, I feel with the turbo I’m gonna have to keep the RPMs up to get it to spool. With the supercharger will just come on with throttle
@JETZcorp11 ай бұрын
@phelpsgarage4202 A turbo will make a pile more midrange than a centrifugal, so turbos are great for pulling corners a gear "too high". You just will lose some part-throttle controllability and crispness. A centrifugal builds boost with RPM with all the power up top, so you'd drive it like you do now. The positive-displacement blowers like roots and twin-screw superchargers are the ones that give you everything from idle, but they're the least powerful up top. Because a centrifugal doesn't make a bunch of torque, it's easier on your engine than a turbo or blower. That big turbo midrange is what bends rods, hurts bearings, and causes most detonation. If you build your bottom-end with stronger parts and lower compression, the turbo becomes more attractive again.

Seems you've got the chassis dialed in on that momentum car really well. My brother owns an FRS(FA20) and he did some of the changes I suggested to get better handling with wheel and tire changes, camber, bracing, etc. . I'm sure your tuner can move the RPM limiter for you fairly easy and all will be good. I still own a 2001 Honda RC51/SP1 1000RR V twin and when it was on the dyno getting mapped the tuner hit the limiter and that shut the motor off; like right now. The tuner thought he blew my motor up, and I told him no it has a soft limiter and a hard limiter, and the 2nd one will turn the engine off. I performed a bypass for the soft limiter so I could spin it to 10,500 RPM after the tune was completed. I'm going to inquire with Mike @ MotoIQ to see if they have found a solution in their engine builds for the FA24 oiling issue, that is not a bandage solution but a cure, as I see no vender is building a different sump. Fullblown makes one for the FA20, but that doesn't help with the FA24.
