I bought my '12, USA FIAT 500 from a used car dealer in 2020. It had 124,300 miles on the Multiair engine. Manual transmission. One right away issue was the hatch wiring. I fixed all the chafed & broken wires best I could & left it alone. I don't use any of (turn them on) the items the wires supply electricity to (wiper or window def.). I put on a universal license plate light & all is well there. My front shocks are exposed as in this video but rust free. I'll give 'em more scrutiny after this video, put some grease on 'em. My brake/clutch cylinders haven't given me any problems & doesn't leak. The pass. side door handle is tight as can be, very little play in it. The driver's side has a little more play in it but is not broken at all. My instrument panel will flash on & off a little bit here & there (I've read that each year has different problems) upon start up (more with cold weather) but works normally after that. I'm in my 4th year of owning the 500, nothing has really gone wrong, & I'm replacing all the wear & tear items as I roll along.

Just found both of those drain holes completely blocked on a 17 plate Abarth with standing water in the tray around them. The only reason I happened to notice that was because my front windscreen wipers stopped working yesterday and, when I removed the scuttle panel to access the wiper motor, I noticed the standing water in there. I also had the broken rear hatch wiring issue, which I fixed a couple of months ago. The car also had a lambda sensor fail about a year ago.

Hi Paul as usual Great, informative advise, your general content and with these common issues with our 500s🙄 The one you mentioned about checking the oil cap, its not always necessarily a head gasket issue ,these cars can suffer from engine condensation build up in the cold of winter with the sudden stop start temperature changes can cause the gunk build up you mentioned, my abarth does or at least did as we recently moved and my car is garaged now☺ so its clear now as its sheltered. I think headgasket failure leans more towards overheating on a test drive, heater not getting hot, coolant in the oil or on the dipstick, oil mixed in coolant expansion tank, an a very excessive build up of emulsified oil and coolant, also worth checking the breather system pcv valve for build up of gunk or for internal rust corrosion if so replace it Another on the abarth, sticking or seized calliper slider pins particularly the rear, this causes foot, hand brake imbalance, uneven pad wear, the inner pad can stick also scoring on the disc's and in worse case the piston can also seize, all the callipers slider pins need to be checked annually to prevent this and unnecessary expense of replacement! Premature underside rust is another, rub down with wire brush or drill attachment then apply direct to rust metal paint will help slow the rust process down and always looks good come mot time Also these cars are very sensitive to the slightest voltage drop so of the battery is a bit dicky it will throw up all sorts of electrical warning issues when all it needs is a new battery which should always be your 1st port of call before panicking and delving deep as this will generally cure the issues ,I'm sure you know yourself are aware of some of these I've mentioned but hopefully will help some of your subscribers ! if I think of any others I'll add them . 🙂👍

Must have been deep. Engine ECU is over a foot off the ground but nothing between it and the outside world. Body computer is lower but of course in the car. you can buy second hand BCMs, Engine ECUs on eBay in the UK and if you buy a kit that includes both ECUs and a key with transponder chip, then no programming is needed otherwise they would both need to be virginised and then programmed to the car. Whether you can get them from a wrecked one in the US is another matter. Here in the UK, it's a pretty easy cheap job of around £100.

Really enjoyed the vid but couldn’t see anything for the problem we’re currently experiencing with my wife’s Fiat 500 1.2S. When we fill the tank with petrol we’re getting a fuel leak - but only when the fuel filler neck is full. After say 20 miles when the fuel in the filler neck goes down the leak stops! Is this anything you’ve ever come across?
@Love5003 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. The pipe from the cap to the tank holds a fair bit of fuel. My project Stolen/Recovered Sport had the same problem. The pipe was cracked and leaked quite a lot of fuel. If you get under the back with a torch you’ll probably see it leaking from there. Take a look at that series, will probably be on the last one as it didn’t come to light until after I had sold it and the new owner filled up. It’s not in this video because it’s not a common fault.

Help. Does anyone know how to reprogram a new stop start battery on a Fiat 500. I fitted a new battery that I paid £180 for but I don’t know how to reprogram the car to recognise the new battery so the stop start doesn’t work. I don’t have the multi scan tool Any help much appreciated.
@Love500 Жыл бұрын
You don't have to code a battery on a Fiat 500. Stop/start is crap on Fiats but would normally work on a new battery for a while. You may have to drive it a bit, but unlike most cars, it will not work, more than it will. They are all like that and most people turn it off anyway.
@pauldeakin3413 Жыл бұрын
When the old battery expired, my wife called the breakdown guy who replaced it with an ordinary battery 6 months ago that cost about £70. Before this the stop start was ok but didn’t work with the new cheap battery. I put a new proper one on last week and it still doesn’t work. Fiat said it needs to be reprogrammed as the ecu doesn’t recognise the new one and is still recognising the old one and want £140 to do it.

Be grateful for any advice
@Love5003 жыл бұрын
I would be very surprised if there wasn't a code stored somewhere. What are you using to read codes? I would expect MultiECUScan to show something as an intermittent fault. It's a possibility your cambelt is a tooth out, but I don't think that would be intermittent. If it was 180 degrees out, the car wouldn't start. It's probably more likely something has been disturbed and not plugged back in properly during the cambelt change. I would recommend MES for diagnostics rather than a generic scanner. Even a quality one wouldn't be as comprehensive as MES.

Hello, I have a 2011 fiat 500 lounge 1.2 fire model vehicle. This car has a start&stop feature, but I have never seen it active. Sometimes it gives a message that start&stop is disabled. When I measure the voltage of the battery, I measure 12.2v when the engine is off and 13.8v when the engine is running. What do you think the problem is?
@Love500 Жыл бұрын
The disabled message is most likely something like the brake light switch but could be many things. Diagnosstics may point to it if you have mutiecuscan. As for start stop itself, most people turn it off. For one it creates wear on other parts of the car continually restarting, makes little or no difference to fuel consumption and doesn't work more than it works. Will work more with a brand new battery in the summer, but when its cold with a not new battery it will rarely, if ever work, especially on older cars. I always turn it off.

@@Love500 Thanks for the quick reply. Then I will use it this way.😊

@@Love500 This is my last question😬When the vehicle is running at idle, occasionally the engine vibrates and the idle level drops and then recovers. It continues this way for 2-3 minutes. Very rarely this happens and the engine stops. When I measure the voltage level of the battery while this is happening, the voltage drops from 13.8v to 12.5v during shaking and then returns to 13.8v immediately when the shaking is over. It's instantaneous. It continues this way for 2-3 minutes. Then nothing. everything goes fine as if nothing happened. It does it again while waiting at the traffic light. Then when I come to the front of the house, there is nothing. 😄 I wonder if there is a problem with the alternator?

Was it on the floor behind the left hand seat? If so, there’s a concertina type pipe that runs along that side of the car which is known to fail behind the rear side panel. You will have to get the rear seat bottom out and remove the side panel to get to it. Once you’ve got it off get someone to press the washer and you’ll see where it’s coming from. You can repair it by cutting the cracked but out and putting g in a repair bit with a joining tee each side. I bought some things at a garden centre pet place fir aquariums. I’m sure you could get them on Amazon too.
