I was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 36 and started on the Omnipod 5 pump pretty quickly. Since I didn't have any habits when it came to my insulin, I fully let the system take over. It has been about two weeks and I'm currently sitting at 99% in range. Meals are where I tend to fall out of range but the pump has been very good about correcting it quickly.

wow, you are extremely lucky. I'm genuinely happy for you, you just brought back memories from the time I was diagnosed (about 20 years ago) and all we had was 1 glucose test strip every 3 days (10 per month covered by insurance) and a few urine tests that in the morning would tell you if you had a bit or a lot of glucose in your urine, and that way you knew if your glucose was just bad or horrible throughout the night. glucose tests were so expensive you could maybe buy another 10 per month from your pocket, that being one of those wonderful months you could eat some cake or something sweet .... also there was no rapid acting insulin, you needed to dose 1.5 hours before eating. in some countries you don't even get any CGM today covered by insurance. we're just happy to have rapid acting insulin. so yeah be grateful 🙏 99% is just mind-blowing for the rest of us

That's wild. Thought my diagnosis at twenty years old was odd and rare, but guess it can happen at any age. Glad to hear you got on a decent system and didn't have to hassle with injections and testing your glucose multiple times and day. Definitely don't miss the year of high glucose, then about ten years of consistent hypoglycemia events. All my fault, but life is so much more convenient with a pump and CGM.

It’s sooo wonderful to have a pump close to diagnosis! We tend to still make some insulin and having a system pause basal insulin is a godsend.

Thanks so much for making these videos, I really appreciate seeing someone who is data driven like myself chime in about real world experiences with these devices. I've been a type 1 for around 22 years and am still struggling to find a CGM/pump combo that I can afford with my insurance so your videos have been incredibly valuable in helping me understand the pros and cons of each system before approaching my provider with additional questions. I'm really hoping the Ypsopump and mylife system will get cleared in the US soon.

I love my Omnipod 5 and the freedom from the tubing. I have NEVER forgotten my transmitter making it impossible to give insulin, if I need it. As far as places to put the pump, you will learn which places work best and which, if any, to avoid. I can say that I've not really had any problems with that. :) This video is awesome for people looking to make a decision between the pumps.

This was one of the best instructional videos i've seen of a medical technology aimed at end-users! Wow and thank you so much! I've been type 1 since i was 14, and using pumps and CGMs since 2008. For 30+ years before that, finger sticks and giant needles. I've used the Dexcom since version 4 or 5. The warranty expired on my old Medtronics Minimed 630g so i was looking into newer pumps, perhaps one that worked in tandem with Dexcom because for me, Dexcom gave the most valid CGM readings (Dexcom ver. 7). When they don't fail, but that's a different story. With the information provided in this video i feel i understand the comparisons/contrasts with the Omnipod and Tandem. Haven't yet decided which i would prefer - clearly pros and cons to both. But now know i what these two offer. Again, many thanks for such a thorough, helpful review!

I have used the tslim x2 for a few years and then switched to the omnipod 5 for cost reasons. I used the omnipod 5 for a year before switching back to the tslim. Its great that the omnipod 5 is pharmacy, so you can switch easily. I switched back to tslim for a few reasons: adhesive allergy issues(and the size of the pods vs infusion sets), random pod site issues/tunneling (and that you can't just replace the infusion set), and the omnipod 5 could never handle dawn phenomenon like the tslim could. Both are good systems, and I agree with all of the points in your video. Similar A1c, time in range, etc. One additional benefit of the tslim is that you don't need a cell phone to manage your cgm. With some of the current dexcom app updates, this is a game changer as the dexcom app can drain your battery quickly. I think using the omnipod 5 helped me to use the tslim x2 more efficiently as I prebolus more regularly now (you pretty much have to with the omnipod 5).

Another great video. On MDI for three years. Omnipod not an options due to cost. Medicare does not consider it a pump. So covered under a prescription. Am talking to tandem and their distributor to determine the copay on pump and infusion sets. Back when on Medtronic I didn’t have any cost. That would be nice. At first didn’t want to give up control but now more open to trying the algorithms on the pump. Fingers crossed

The tslim x2 is very convenient with use, especially with quick bolus feature. Being able to unhook anytime is awesome, but the tubing can get annoying (even with a shorter tube). Filing the Tslim reservoir is kind of tedious, especially if you want to make sure all the air is expelled from the system and tubing. Also, think the minimum units to purge/prime the tubing is 10 units, which is annoying if you're trying to reuse or reduce waste. You can get five days or so out of the pump and cannula (not recommended). Overall, if you get a clip on belt case, the Tslim is an excellent option. Had the original system for $899 (USD) after insurance, then took the trade in for the X2 for $600 back in 2016. Unfortunately, my current insurance doesn't cover Tandem all supplies, so it's a paperweight now. Might donate it to an educator or clinic so it gets used. As for the Omnipod and PDM system, it's wonderful minus the wasteful design. Haven't had an issue with adhesive or the pump failing after a few months. Not convenient carrying an extra device, but at least I'm not using my phone battery or being accused of being on my phone at work. Certainly not as quick and easy as the Tslim system, but works great. Alerts and controls work well and wake me up when needed. Filling the Omnipod is easy, and seems to be very little waste with insulin. I've had a few times where the site started bleeding, but it doesn't help that I'm thin or choose not ideal sites. Haven't went swimming yet with the Omnipod, but doesn't seem like it would be a problem. Exercise is more motivating not having tubing or worrying about the cannula getting ripped off, but an overpatch would help with either pump if you're worried. Conclusion: I recommend the Omnipod for someone getting used to using a pump system. My glucose levels have been more consistent and I'm getting more aware of hypoglycemic episodes. Introduction kit was $70 after insurance, which is much cheaper than the Tslim. All really depends on your insurance and what your use is for the pump. Either choice is great compared to taking multiple injections per day. If you need a faster bolus (access and delivery), then choose Tslim. Omnipod seems to be great for people that need overall less insulin, but if you're someone that needs more insulin go with Tslim.

Hi, just found your channel and promptly subscribed. I have been T1 for 44 years. Used the Medtronic pumps for many years but their CGM has not worked well for me. I gave up on their version three years ago. Maybe their newest CGM is better? But the Dexcom is much more robust especially if you are active. Today I use the T-Slim X2. My perfect system would be the newest Medtronic pump paired with the Dexcom G6 but that will not happen anytime soon. I like the X2 but I don't love it. The alarms are so annoying. I recently had to choose a new pump since my out-of-warranty T-slimx2 broke. I have never had an issue with with tubing. What I don't like about the omni-pod is that once the pod is in place, I wouldn't be able to change it if I felt it was in an uncomfortable place. It does look large on people's arms so I have a feeling it would be uncomfortable for me. I was going to maybe choose the Tandem Mobi which is supposed to be released in the U.S. in the first few months of 2024. Having a 4-5 inch tube and the pump itself only being 1/2 the size of the T-Slim, the Mobi sounds great, but since it is controlled totally by my phone and I don't always carry my phone with me, I decided to go with the T-slimx2 again.

the omnipod can hold 200u of standard novo rapid insulin. So you would only get to eat 200g of carbs before running out of insulin based on what you said. However I've heard that there exists some insulins that are more "concentrated" and could allow you to potentially have more than 200 units of insulin in the omnipod reservoir.

@@Shrek_The_Mathematician Normal insulin, Novolog, Humalog, Apidra, Lyumjev, NPH, Lantus, Levemir, are all U-100. Which is the standard, regular concentration. There are 100 units of insulin per 1 milliliter. Do a Google search on insulin concentrations and you will find the other more concentrated insulins. Lantus Glargine is available as U-300. Lilly Humalog is available as U-200. In pens only, no vials and no pump usage. And there is a Humulin U-500 available in small vials. For the original person who made a comment. I would suggest looking at using the U-300 Lantus as your basal insulin to replace Tresiba. And using Humalog U-200 pens to replace your current Novolog. You are taking so much insulin you need to use the concentrated versions.

Omnipod might not work for you. When I look at how much insulin I use now compared to Tresiba it’s about 30% less so even if you use less basal in a pump it would probably still be about 60 units of basal daily so depending how many carbs you eat you would only get 2 days out of a pod at most

Going from a Minimed pump, I started Fiasp along with the Omnipod about 6 months ago and initially it was fine. I am now however currently so completely frustrated and am changing to the tandem as I have had NOTHING but problems with the Fiasp and omnipod. I have marks and rashes all over my arms and stomach from constantly having to change the Omnipod site due to it rarely stays in after a shower, also literally 50% of the time it does not stay attached to my skin even if it doesnt get wet or when it does stay attached, at about right under day 2 days in, I have to replace it due to excessive severe irritation, itching and redness at the site. In addition I have non stop alarms going off all day with the omnipod, sometimes I have no idea if I am receiving insulin because if I accidentally barely hit the omnipod on something because of how bulky it is, I have no idea if I once again need to change it as it does not indicate if it is still properly inserted in my arm. IN addition, I have been through 3 controllers and often I can have the controller in my hand 6 inches away from the Pod and it cannot locate it?? I do know one thing for certain is that I have never been so frustrated in my 25 years of being on an insulin pump than I am now with the Omnipod. I am going to change to the Tandem and continue with the Fiasp and see if that works better as the Omnipod is SO SO bulky and it does not work at at for me as it again doesn't stay in and trust me I have tried every sticky tape and skin glues out there. I think the Omnipod truly is terrible!

I follow an untethered approach. About 20 to 30% of my basal comes from Tresiba injection. Uncoupling the pump (without risking ketoacidosis) is a must for me. Also, what happens with omnipod if there is blockage or inflammation? Replacing it becomes quite expensive compared to only replacing a simple cannula.

Would be interesting what you think of the Medtrum nano pump. I swapped over to this from the T slim. I’ve never looked back since swapping over as compared to a tethered pump. I’m also on AAPS which is a much better system.

A bit off topic (but still about diabetes!): I have not watched all of your content yet, and I'm not sure if you are aware of something I've found recently - how to change the fast carbs into more resistant ones, that won't affect the glucose levels as much. Rice, bread, pasta (pasta I find the worst!) - after cooking, place it in the fridge over night. It changes the starches molecularly - even heating the product up, after proper cooling, won't bring the GI to as high levels as when freshly cooked and warm. There is a channel talking about it on YT in a short, simple vid. "motivationaldoc" is the channel name. If you have spoken about that very matter, could you let me know where can I find it, please? Thank you, once again. DEAR PEOPLE! Listen to the man!

Something I’d like to mention as an owner for the tSlim is about the Bluetooth. It disconnects from the Dexcom G6 quite often which is extremely frustrating. The G6 stays connected to my phone all the time so long as it’s within range. This leads me to believe that the receiver on the tSlim is very poor. Ironically it has just disconnected again 😂

Hi Tom. Thanks for this video (and all the others!!). How (should you have experienced it) would you compare those 2 with the Medtronic 780g? I switched from Insulin Pens (Fiasp and Tresiba) to the MiniMed 780g three weeks ago and so far this is pretty close to being a disaster. Sensor that does not last the full 7 days and that I am asked to change without any clear rationale, catheter constantly peeling off and needing replacement, rashes (for sensor and catheter) at insertion sites, long delay (up to 2 hours with Guardian 3 but I understand that it will be 2h sharp with the #4) to initiate the sensor at each time replacement... Yes, the time in range is very good (as well as the capacity to increase your target when you plan to exercise) and the microadjustement automatically made by the pump tremendously helps but that range is pretty large (from 3.9 to around 10mmol/L). If I am at 85% in range but within that range always closer to 9-10 than 5-6 I am not convinced that it is such a great achievement... In any case thanks for any feedback you may be able to give. Cordially,

Thank you as always for your insightful videos! A quick question for you and your community: in the video you said that in your country (Switzerland?), you are not tied to the Omnipod 5 for 4 years, as you are with the t:slim. I am in Germany and heard that you are still tied to it for the same 4 years as other systems, which makes no sense to me at all since -- as you point out -- you (or your insurance) don't buy a pump but only the cartridges that you could just stop ordering. Do you have more info on this? Maybe I was given wrong information
@TypeOneTalks
@TypeOneTalks 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words my friend. Yes, I am in Switzerland. Just to clarify, Omnipod 5 has not made it here yet:) I got mine from the US and self funded the Omnipod 5. But in general, here in Switzerland, we get annual coverage for pump and pump supplies and we can choose the pump we want. The pump supplies are priced slightly differently brand by brand but in general the insurance covers the vast majority of the cost. Omnipod (the old version) is the one that's by far the most flexible - no contract, just use as I go and stop whenever I want. With the other pumps, you're assumed to use it for 4 years. I'm not saying it's impossible to get out of the contract but it's a lot more hustle. Omnipod also offers a free 30 day trial here btw and I think they do it in more countries (not sure about Germany).
@Kewilin89
@Kewilin89 9 ай бұрын
@@TypeOneTalks great, thanks so much for your response! I might be moving to Switzerland next year, so this is very good to know. I've been trying to decide, which of the current AID systems to get and the 4-year rule is really intimidating. So knowing that potentially picking the Omnipod 5 now (in Germany) and being able to switch to a different system in Switzerland later on before the 4 years are over, is very helpful info. Unfortunately the only trial you can do is wear a fake Omnipod on your body (but without the algorithm, insulin, or anything like that -- it's just to know what it feels like on your body).

Concerning the T-Slim and the bluetooth connectivity issues with the Dexcom.....I've discovered if you only use the pump itself for CGM readings and NOT adding your cell phone to the mix, the connectivity is better. Having two devices reading the transmitter I believe causes a disruption. Only my experiences here folks.

I just recently changed over from the G6 to the G7 and I've noticed alarming rates of dropped connection. I use both my phone and the pump (t-slim x2) to monitor sugar levels. The G6 had few dropped connections after the bolus update for the Tandem app. I find the app, especially G7, offers more user friendly data than the G6 and let's you start new sensors during the grace period. I'm still on my very first G7 sensor so i don't know just yet if the pump will let me start a second sensor during the grace period of the sensor prior. Since I'm not sure which is the dominant device, if neither, I find myself crowding my arm with both when I'm sitting on the couch or laying on my back.

Have been using Tandem x2 for a couple years, but hated the uncontrollable high glucose alarms waking me during sleep when BG hit 200 and above! Decided to try the Omnipod 5 starter kit to prevent alarms! On week 2 had 2 "System Error" codes that forced me to change out the POD! My pancreas delivers "no insulin"! So the Omnipod needs changing every 2 1/2 days which is too soon for me! (200 units capacity) My Tandem holds 300 units and will last 4 to 5 days depending on how good my control is? I have NEVER had an issue with the Tandem pump not working! But Dexcom G6 issues are the only problem I have occasionally? My job requires out-of-town trips that would require me to carry extra Omnipod supplies just in case of an error and need of insulin? With Tandem I never have to carry any extra supplies if my trip is under 4 days? Long story short, Tandem for me! Thx

Suggest you consult your doctor about the high alarms at night. I'm on the Tandem x2 and it is extremely rare to have high or even low alarms. Right off hand I'm thinking a basal rate change could be beneficial. Good luck.

Not the exact comparison you are looking for. But I now use the T:slim with Dexcom G6 and Control IQ. All the time. G6 CGMS is very accurate to my blood sugar meter. So I know the pump is getting the right information. I achieve 85% time in range, 70-170. And A1c of 5.5. Used to use the Dexcom 670G. Predecessor to the 780G. Its Guardian CGMS was very inaccurate. I suspect the newest Medtronic CGMS is just as inaccurate. So the pump never had good information or blood sugars to work with. The 670G pump was very lackadaisical about giving basal insulin to lower blood sugars. It took the notion that being high was just fine. I doubt the 780G has any different programming. I used the Auto Mode with the 670G.

I was diagnosed 4 months ago with type 1 I'm 36 and they started me on the omnipod and for being a beginner at this the pod works good I still don't like the fact that I don't have complete control on the pod especially when I go high! I have noticed if I bolus at least 15 to 20 mins early my sugars will stay in range depending on what I ate. My father in law is on the slim and he swears by it so I've been doing my research because I'm not sure on which one I want to do I'm scared to say yes to the slim and be stuck with it for yrs if I don't like it.

Would be good if you could compare Loop + Omnipod Dash + Dexcom (6 or 7) with Omnipod 5 + Dexcom G6. I have partially working transplanted islet cells and Loop's algorithm is not learning reoccurring sudden drop (due to islet cells kicking in) from 10 mmol/L (180 mg/dL) to 7 or 8 mmol/L (125 to 145 mg/dL) and I end up experiencing hypoglycemia even merely by increasing the basal during an hour or two after eating a meal or snack. If Omnipod 5's algorithm adjustment can learn THAT SUDDEN DROP behavior, I really like to try it, but if the algorithm variation is not supporting that kind of sudden drop, then probably it just gives me more headache than good leaving things to the pump to decide and taking away my manual interventions.
