Hi! My dream job is to be able to work at a fashion and lifestyle magazine such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, etc. I adore writing and I dream of studying journalism, but there are so many labels such as editor in chief, editorial assistant, beauty and lifestyle editor, etc. I wanna be able to be a very experienced editor in the future of course after many years of hard work, but I’m a bit scared that maybe my bachelor’s degree in journalism won’t be enough? If anyone knows anything PLEASE reply back with any advice or an answer since you really will be saving my life. Thank you 💘

I'm only a student, but I would recommend going on websites like H&M, looking in clothing stores, going to local fashion shows, maybe ones in DC or Baltimore, Md. I don't know, but writing about what you see in currently in style on a blog. promoting yourself through a professional social media page, asking people what they think of the current fashion, interviewing them.

Hey, journalism student here. I am still very early in my career but I share your feels and fears. Something I’ve learned since the very beginning is: create your own brand, this meaning you can make yourself known with your own independent work which is crucial in the digital era. We have multiple tools to do so and as you love to write, you can create a fashion blog, even a tumblr would do it, where you start posting about what you think and like while also practicing and enhancing your skills. What this does is give you experience to add to your resume and also a chance to be known and have an audience so at the end of the day you may end up working by yourself as you already built very strong bases doing what you love. I hope I explained myself well haha, that my piece of advice.

Hello Lucia! Thank you for explaining the video on how to become a journalist! Really appreciate it. This video has inspired me to become a journalist. Will be earning my BA degree in journalism from a 4-year college next year in the fall as well! Also, I took news reporting course in this past spring semester of this year. That course has helped me a lot as well! For right now, I am taking mass media in this semester. It also has similar to journalism! It is a requirement to my journalism major from a 4-year college. I am also Hispanic, but I was born and raised in the US. When I was younger, I learned Spanish and English at the same. I did not speak Spanish until age 16. I grew up understanding most of the Spanish at a young age most likely. I started to speak Spanish fluently at age 18. I grew up with my Spanish speaking family who are from Colombia and Puerto Rico. My bio parents are from Puerto Rico, and my stepdad is from Colombia. I have a younger brother in my mom’s side. I have four younger sisters and one younger brother in my bio dad’s side. I have one nephew in my first sister’s side. I had to move from state to state at a young age for another 2 to 3 years because my stepdad’s military. I always call him dad because I grew up with him. I am working on my second book which is called my life throughout with autism and being a military. It also has inspired me to become an author in a future. I have been studying at a 2-year college for 7 years. I graduated from high school in 6 years ago. Once I graduate with my AA degree in General Ed, I will be including that on my book. Again, thank you for explaining how it is to become a journalist. Really appreciate it. Once I get the internship for journalism from a 4-year college, I will let know when I will be earning my internship from a 4-year college! I am willing to work on television as a journalist because it is my dream career. I did not take any journalism courses in high school due to my military move. In high school, I wanted to become a game design back in 9th and 10th grade. In 10th and 11th grade, I wanted to be a math teacher. In 12th grade, I have changed my life to what I want to become an actor on television. Acting has always been my dream career at a young age. Journalism is my dream career in nowadays. However, journalism was my dream career in my senior year of high school. Once I complete with my AA degree, I will be doing training for acting. I speak Spanish as well! Spanish is technically my second language. I went to a bilingual school where people spoke Spanish and English back in my hometown. I was born in the city of Buffalo in New York. I lived there in my early childhood until age 5. Since I had to do a lot of PCSing from state to state in every year, I went back to a normal school where people spoke mostly English in every states I lived in. I went to an army base school in Puerto Rico where people spoke Spanish and English as well in high school. Wish you are the best of luck at everything you do. You did a great job with the video by the way! That is very impressive! Congratulations on earning your journalism degree from Spain. I completely understand your English because your English is going great! Los dos idiomas son más importantes. Dios te bendiga y tu familia. 🙏❤️

Thank for such a video explaining about this career option. I am currently trying to figure out what can I approach as a career option and listing them and cancelling them out after getting an overlook of the aspects of that career and the fact if I really have interest in it and can do it. So thanks, I really appreciate it. Thanks to you I got to know about the various aspects of journalism, earlier my knowledge of journalism was only limited to news media.

I'm in highschool and in a Special Program in Journalism (it's still like your normal HS but there's an added subject which is Journalism which of course teaches you about Journalism). I'm a campus journalist, part of school publication, won several certificates for newswriting, we have a team in Radio Broadcasting and also join competitions and our team won 1st 2 times in a row now. I'm a news reporter in our team. I plan to go to a HUMSS stand in Señior and take a Journalism course and hopefully get a job surrounding journalism except broadcasting cause' i'm to lazy to talk and i write my words (lol) though in journalism you need to be talkative and interview people which ofc we did. This is part of every member in a school publication i don't know if this applies in companies/jobs. Editor-in-Chief - basically the head of publication. Checks everything. Kinda leads in meetings but the Journalism teacher is the main boss. Edits everything before releasing a newspaper or whatever it is they are doing. Managing Editor - basically an assistant to EIC, he/she hires new journalist who won a competition or a person who were suggested by a teacher. He/she reports everything to EIC. News Editor - writes main news topics and edits news writers articles. That's the higher parts of the publication. There are of course more parts you can land into but i forgot most of them because of quarantine lol. I'm a news editor. And oh, a publication also has it's own Radio and TV broadcasting team which were carefully picked from winning teams in competitions or suggested good enough. Journalism writers. News Writers - main thing and the real deal. To be able to write any other topic you need to learn the basics and know how to write news, it shall be precise and use flowery but common words for readers or listeners to understand. There are different types of news writing like in-depth news or radio news script but i won't go into too much details. You write in third person. Don't express your emotions just 100% pure facts of the topic. Feature Writer - this is basically what you read in a magazine, they use real flowery words and basically just telling a story, common examples of this is "Step by step on how to cook this or that", or "What's on trending?" Typa articles. Sports writers - writes about sports of course, sports writers need to use their words with jangos which can identify a sports article. The writing should be hyped and as if on action for readers to be hooked on. Science Writer - Science writers writes articles about scientific topics which then they writer on much simpler terms for readers to understand. Editorial Writers - This is all out opinion of the writer but still has a structure and before starting the professional rant it should be supported with facts and foundations. Copywriting - articles which the writers wrote will be given to him or her to be edited. There are a lot of symbols you need to memorize to edit. Photojournalism - takes photos of the insident of topic based on the article. Photos should be transparent and has a certain angle that can hook readers to read the article too. Subject should not be posing. Capture on spot. Captions are vital. Layout artist - layouts the newspaper or magazine. Real deal when in your in a competition cause you only need an hour, that includes writing the articles with your team. You should know a lot of shortcuts if you want to finish fast, but the design are the main thing.(Collaborative) Radio/TV Broadcasting Team Female and Male Anchors - in radio or TV broadcasting if you are watching TV they are the ones just in the studio narrating all throughout the broadcast. They are the main thing. Reporters - in TV they are the ones interacting outside of studio and talking to the anchors and reports the happenings on where they currently are. News, Sports and Feature (sometimes in studio) reporters. If you are in a competition scripts should be written by the one who will report it. Without scripts no competition and ultimate disqualified. Tech - there are the ones who plays background songs and stingers, they have one of the most important works because sound should be on right time and there should be a right song which will fit what the anchor or reporter is telling. In radio broadcasting it applies the same but they are all together in one room (IF in a competition) and just holding a mic. In our school, we have 3 publications, one for juniors and señiors and in juniors like us we have the english publication which shall not be named and our native language publication which also shall not be named. I hope what i learned in the last three years will help you guide in your job especially when you don't have background (for some reason?) or just about to enter the journalism scene. I'm turning 10th grade this School year so hope everything goes well. Would be possibly in a Journalism related job even though i'm quite also skilled in Coding/Programming and computer technology. Anyways, if you have any questions please let me know and i'll reply!

It's like the oldest job in the world: THERE is no such thing in America as an independent press, unless it is in the country towns. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write his honest opinions, and if you did you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid $150.00 a week for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with-others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things-and any of you who would be so foolish as to write his honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. The business of the New York journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his race and his country for his daily bread. You know this and I know it, and what folly is this to be toasting an “Independent Press.” We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping-jacks; they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. John Swinton, 1883.
