How did I become a journalist? I bullsh#tted my way in. Sort of. With only a semester of study at a large american university, I started out as a copy editor at a magazine, reading loads of badly written copy and making copious corrections. From there, I landed an editor job at a tiny midwestern paper. From there, I built up a cache of stories that I submitted to a larger paper, then a larger paper after that, spending about a year at each one. The bullsh#t part came in the interviews. I spoke confidently, professed my love of writing and insisted I would never get scooped by a competitor. But the interviews were a small part of the process. Here's the thing: You must know how to write. That first copy editor job? Well, I earned it by taking a copy editing test my employer gave me. I aced it, only because I knew how to construct a sentence. Knowing grammar rules is key. But also knowing copy editing marks and how they are applied to copy is important as well. All that information is a cinch to find online. If you are confident you can whip up a story, then skip the steps I took, call a publication (print or online) and submit a story. The worst they can say is no. A word of advice, though: If you're even a little uncertain how to craft a story, don't submit crap. Publications dont like crap. Spend time reading other stories and emulate those. The best training I had as a reporter was reading other reporters' work, and following their lead (lede?). I hope this at least marginally helps. @@jdee8407 Actually that's what most journos in established media like CNN and MSNBC are doing. It's more about reporting stuffs in a certain tone to push a certain narrative, virtue signaling and framing a narrative. In other hand, journalists are Ministers of Truth.

An advise to all, do not study Journalism. Most Editors don't think a Uni degree is essential anyway and if you get one, do it in English.

I'm so torn between a Vet Tech or a Journalist. I love to write, and I adore animals, but I'm thinking about being a part-time fashion (random, will probably change soon) journalist and a part-time Vet Tech, so I work full time, but with two separate jobs :)

You could be an environmental journalist who covers wildlife, the environment, and issues that follow. Journalism is so broad if you find the right newspaper/magazine you could write about anything!

Being ethical does not just mean giving truthful information in journalism. Plagiarism, where a journalist uses someone else’s words as their own without accrediting them, is a good example of this. A journalist can plagiarize the truth and report it in his words, and this is still wrong. This is basically theft in the form of information. There are many different forms of plagiarism, and they are difficult to catch. Due to the nature of the news, it is often hard to tell whether content is original or not. This goes for interviews as well, but it does have negative consequences on the journalism community and leads to mistrust.
