As a homeschool mom my favorite morning activity is standing out in my yard and watching all the madness. While I can't see the school from my yard, two of the school lines get backed up all the way to my house. Its wonderful. Lol.

I was a school bus driver. I had that parent at one school. They figured that because they had a mini van and that they were also picking up the neighbors kids (4 in all) they were a school bus. She would park right smack in the middle making the busses line up after her. I refused to so I passed her to move my bus in front where the busses are suppose to be got real close to her van. You could hear her screaming I was going to crush her. The teachers just laughed. She had been told over and over by both the school and the police she could not park there. She just did not want to get in the carpool lane. Funny thing is, the time she would get there to beat the bus, would have put her in the front of the line anyway.

As a non-American I'm really confused as to what "the line" even is. Is it like a taxi rank that parents pull up to? How do you know when your kid is ready, do all the kids just wait off to the side and the teacher yells the name when a parent pulls their car to the front of the line? The schools I went to in Australia didn't have parking lots for parents, just teachers (even students who were >18 and drove weren't allowed to park on school grounds). Parents would just park on neighbouring streets, or circle the block repeatedly and kids would walk around till they found the right car. We don't have school buses either, the schools I went to had arranged with the bus devision of the public transport department to have a public bus stop instated nearby.
@4knewt505
@4knewt505 5 жыл бұрын
@@AreilKnight yes, it's pretty typical in the US to have school bus or parent drop off areas. There are some cities that are really large that kids use public transportation to go to school.

@@AreilKnight Yes, it's like a taxi rank at the worst airport in the WORLD. All the kids leave class at roughly the same time and their parents queue to pick them up, hopefully the kids spot their cars and go and get in when the teachers allow (all cars are stopped). It's why my kids have to ride the bus home! I won't do car line!

When my son started school, I put him in Kindergarten, at the Catholic school, one block from my lab. I meet his teachers, the Head of School and Sister Kathrine, the very small, 70+ nun, who taught art. Sister was also in charge of the Pick-Up line. She explained, I would line up on a certain street, put a cardboard placard on the sun visor, so she could see the family name, and a /K for his class; all said in a very sing song, soft voice. First day, I was first in line, (Told my Techs, I was taking off early for first day). I seem to have made a lady in a blue minivan, VERY upset. SHE had always been first. Oh well, and no I don't think I can move. The big surprise for me, the gate opens to the back school yard, I pull ahead, flip down the sun visor, out steps Sister. All of a sudden, she pulls out a bull horn, and, yells, "ARMSTRONG, Kindergarten, on deck, MOVE". I, jumped a foot. from a seated position, and my son ran like a cougar was on his tail. Who knew a nun could pull that much sound out!. We got used to it. Oh, and I am told, the mom in the blue minivan, started showing up an hour early, for pick up, so she could be first in line. Ok by me, I used that time to get a cup of coffee, and a burrito. I have a life, AND a burrito.

@@peanutbuttersandwich5015 It's not a new thing at all. Parents picked up their kids in the 50s, 60s, and onwards. School buses were also a thing. I'm an 80s kid and I never walked home from school. I usually took the school bus or my parents dropped me off/picked me up. I kinda wish my parents had let me walk home during elementary school, seeing as we didn't live far from the school grounds. As a teacher, I can say that the most frustrating thing is when parents habitually disrespect pick up times. I had to stay in the pick up zone an extra 45 minutes. That's an extra 45 minutes standing up after not sitting down all day. I realize that emergencies happen and I'm understanding of those. However... When it's every day it just disrespectful. :/

If we aren’t there to pick our kids up within 20 minutes of school being let out it’s considered abandonment. Police will be called and we’re left to deal with whatever that entails. Of course we can call ahead for emergencies and whatnot but we can’t just be late. Especially, not 45 minutes late without a plan. It’s the 3 page in the handbook. 😂 Sounds like your school needs new rules to keep parents on time.

In the UK, we do it differently at Primary Schools. You wait with your kids in the main playground or courtyard (Year 5s and 6s can be left alone) and they go into their classrooms when their teacher opens the door. With dropping off, the parents wait in the main playground or courtyard and pick-up their kids when their teacher opens the door.
