You are very good at teaching. I went to elementary school in the 60's and am homeschooling my 2 grandsons. One thing I can't help but notice is how overly complicated everything has become. The kids have to learn a new language every time there is another technique. (open, closed, etc.) Here are the basic rules we were taught. 1. Every vowel sound equals a syllable. 2. The consonants follow the short vowel sounds. 3. Split the double consonant between short vowel sounds. It just seems if they don't have to be bogged down focusing on "types", it might be easier and faster to learn how to split the words. 🙂

Thank you for making me realize that the part has to have a "vowel sound" in it, not necessarily an actual vowel.

Connecting the six types of syllables to writing, especially a Haiku, is a great way to connect reading and writing. Thanks!

Hi, Anna! Lovely lesson. Question: When you used an r-controlled vowel team within the open syllable example (tiger), would this hypothetical class have already received instruction on the concept of RCVs? If not, are you using it here to plant a seed for future teaching? Thanks!

A closed syllable does not have to be closed in on both sides of the vowel. It often is, but words like: on, it, is, up are all closed syllables. It only has to be closed in after the vowel. It's important they don't think it has to be a CVC word to be closed.
