Are you a typewriter geek? I am. Meaning, I'm a writer who uses vintage manual typewriters all the time in his work.
This CreateX3.com Typewriter Profile reviews a 1935 Remington Rand Model 1 ... sometimes branded as a Model One. It was called "the Noisy Noiseless" machine and you'll see why when you watch the video.

$60.00 Back in 1930 had the purchase power of $1,100 in todays money, so yes, it was a large investment. Nuts to think that a typewriter would cost so much. It was $60.00 dollars but $60 back then was like $1,100 in terms of how much $1,100 can buy you. That's still a crazy amount for a typewriter. I wrote that out in case some one doesn't understand how "In Today's Money" works, as I know some don't. Its purchasing power. If you had $60 bucks it wasnt $1,100 lol it's not an exchange rate with history, it means that $60 dollars back in the 30s had the purchase power of $1,100 in today's money. There is a difference and it's important to know it. But thats still insane for even then. To bad they dont sell for that much today with inflation lol. Thank you for sharing its a beautiful machine ❤. 👍

I agree,@@toneyfranklin2170. That's very funny, indeed. As @dadtype2339 stated in this comment string (accurately, I think) $60 back then and $60 today are not comparable values. From another point of view, however, I used to own several items-such as computers-whose operations were rendered null after only five years. Their obsolescence was planned by the manufacturers in a bid to get people to buy more planned obsolescence machines. Most of my typewriters only needed a thorough cleaning and a new ribbon to get them running again when I bought them second hand. I've used them well and thankfully ever since. To me, that's real value. Wishing you all the best with your Rand.

Dear sir, lovely machine, I have the same one in the UK. I have noticed you have the ribbon incorrectly threaded through, I think that's why it wasn't crisp and clear type. You also had to use a lot of backing sheets. Love your videos, I hope I've not offended you. I only found this out by the local typewriter repair man on the island I took it to be cleaned and serviced.

I am told by people far more knowledgeable than I am that I cannot be fixed. This was upsetting after all the work I put into it but I have no regrets, I learned a great deal. If nothing else it’s allowed me to meet other people like yourself who love these machines as much as I do. Wishing you and your family all the best for a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2023. @@TheMarkanthony5 Very kind of you to say these things, Mark. It was certainly a shock when it happened but then … well, life is short and good and one quickly moves on. As far as your question, yes, I think it’s fine to leave your machines out so long as you clean them every so often. I certainly do this. I find it calming to look at my typewriters, as odd as that probably sounds. Remember: they want to be enjoyed by you as much as you want to enjoy them. So have them where you can see them and use them, take care of them and I have a strong suspicion that they will take care of you.

The model 1 I have looks like it was never used (case even had both keys) so all I had to do was get the platen re-done and replacement feet. Could never figure out why the impression was so light. Great tip on the cotton ribbon! I'm going to load one up and try it out. Now that I know how the carriage lock works I need to check the platen assembly. The right knob will not extend so I would have never figured that one out. Thank you for the tips and demo!

This was insightful, informative and, like all your posts, entertaining. Thanks for posting. I bought a lovely, near mint Remington Noiseless Portable about 24 years ago, but never used it. It sat in the back of my closet until last Thursday, when I finally dug it out and remembered why it sat unused: a previous owner apparently closed the case but failed to first fold down the machine’s little Carriage Return Lever; now, sadly, broken. But you (and others) have inspired me. Not to attempt the repair and necessary overhaul and refurbishing myself (I have the heart but, alas, not the skill set to do that), but to find Gramercy Typewriter, where I will take it. It seems that welding that little handle is not advised; fortunately, I suspect there are replacement handles “out there”. Very exciting! Finally, have you considered using a typewriter pad? I imagine they might well make Noiseless machines even noiseless-ier.

Richard, this is a great story. Thanks for sharing it! A lot of machines end up in the same situation as yours due to a former owner's carelessness. I just picked up a 1950s Royal Quiet DeLuxe. Same deal. Amazing how some people treat machines. Yes, by all means, take your Remington to a reputable dealer/repair person. Gramercy Typewriter is one of the best there is. You'll be in very good hands with Jay and Paul, and their team. As to your other question, yes, I use a typewriter pad. I got one for each of the places I currently work and I find that they make a big difference. I've actually been planning to do a quick video about the benefits of using one. Thanks for reminding me, thanks for watching, and best of luck with your Remington!

@@CreateX3-DamonDiMarco Hey, thanks for the feedback. Picked up the little Remington Noiseless Portable from Gramercy just today! It sure is a sweet little thing (okay I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for anything in gloss black. I have ostensibly "better" typewriters, but this is the one I'd take to the prom). So far I love it, though there are a couple of minor issues: the right platen doesn't seem to wanna move in or out hardly at all, making the carriage lock tricky to use. And I'm not sure the ribbon advance is, well… advancing. We'll see what unfolds over the next few weeks. But I do have some good news for you! I noticed yours occasionally "skips ahead" while typing. Well guess what, so does mine - and, apparently, so do others. A "staccato technique" is recommended (seems to help), AND there's even a possible adjustment! Too tricky for me, but might be right up your tinkerer alley. Check it out: badonoer.blogspot.com/2016/03/skipping-of-remington-noiseless.html

Great video! The videos documenting your restoration were great as well. I have a Remington Rand Noiseless Model 7 and a lot of the mechanisms are similar to your Model 1. I had the same issue putting the platen back in place and also almost lost my mind trying to figure out how it all worked. My Model 7 is in good condition, but I do have an issue with the line spacing mechanism. None of the pieces are broken, but, after watching your videos, I get the suspicion that I am missing a spring of some sort. Any suggestions on how to get a replacement? Finding a parts machine is difficult and I haven't been able to find a clear photo of the spring in question.

@CreateX3-DamonDiMarco 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Alex. So funny that you mention this. I recently picked up Model 7 that I've been tinkering with. And yes, I agree there might be a spring on both models that allows that keeps the line spacing mechanism in place as you switch from one line setting to the next. Though it's not an issue on my Model One. While tinkering with the Model 1, I noticed that none of the springs were that unusual. I've also cut and resized springs (you can see this in my Restoring a Corona 4 video, I think). Have you tried calling a typewriter dealer and asking them if they have springs they can sell? I'm constantly amazed at their expertise and willingness to be of assistance.

Hi T’as @taskyprianou. Thanks for the good words on the videos! To the best of my knowledge, Underwood and Smith Premier have no relation. Underwood was acquired by Elliot-Fisher in 1928 and purchased by Olivetti in 1959. They stopped making typewriters in … I believe it was1969. I’ve never used a Smith Premier and so can’t comment on how it handles. The Underwood Universal I featured is (again) a bare bones, no nonsense machine and prized for that reason. Hi @Janicekenny250. Just so I know we’re on the same page (yes, I know…little pun there) are you referring to the finger-style paper rollers, of which there are two on this machine? If so, you might be better off calling typewriter repair shops than shopping on eBay. Most established typewriter repair shops have what are called graveyards-depots where they’ve picked non-functioning machines clean, labelled the parts by make, model, and year, and stored them in as close to optimal conditions as possible. I’ve had tremendous luck finding parts by simply calling these shops and telling them what I need. The additional benefit here is that these purveyors are typically experts at typewriter restoration, and so make sure that you get exactly what your looking for. Does this make sense? I hope it helps. Please keep in touch and let me know how you make out. And thanks for watching.

Hi @baritonZIGS. You could try eBay, where specialty vendors sell basically anything related to typewriters. For best results, make sure to type in the make, model, and year (if you know it) of your machine. You could also try your closest typewriter repair shop. Most of these businesses maintain "graveyards" for parts they've stripped off other machines. I've had great success doing this. You also get the benefit of the proprietor's hard won expertise. They can usually answer any questions you have about your machine or others you're interested in. I hope this helps. Please check back in and keep me abreast. And thanks for watching!

Hi Dakota. It’s hard to tell what’s going on without being there to look at the machine. I’m assuming you unlocked the carriage. If that’s the case and you’re still getting this effect where the space bar doesn’t work and the characters are typing over each other, you should take the machine to a repair shop. Jeff, this is an excellent question. I’m laughing out loud because I call them tab set doohickeys. Deeply technical. Incredibly specific. But what the hell, it gets the job done. Best bet would be to get hold of a manual for one of these machines, they tend to be thorough and will acquaint you with the approved brand nomenclature for the aforementioned doohickey. My suspicion is that, with a bit of measuring and some sheet metal tools, you could easily cut new doohickeys. Or have someone in a metal shop do it. Probably wouldn’t cost much. I have a mint model 7. It had a defective M key. Because of the typebar design the small oval connecting links are brutal to fix. I ended up having iit fixed by a repair shop because I lacked the proper tool to repair the link. It cost me $100 plus a 2 hour ride both ways to drop off and pick up. Plus it is a very narrow area to work on. I also don’t like that you have to respool the ribbons on the factory spools. It does type nice though.

Hi Damon, I just recently purchased the Remington Rand Model 1. I just have a few questions. It appears everything on the typewriter is fully functional. Accept the underside rollers of a platen. I first wanted to ask where you got your replacement rollers from, and for how much. I also wanted to ask about this issue on the underside of the typewriter where the keys are. It looks like the U button is somewhat “loose.” If I tild the typewriter forward, I can see the U “striker” loosely move forward and back. I notice there are these metal hoops holding the keys in place on the bottom near the spacebar. The U’s hoop looks very loose. I put it forward like all the others but it always goes back to a floppy state. I’m wondering if this is a common problem. Also there is this weird orange-brown substance that I noticed is above and below where the keys rest just under the spacebar area and above where the keys retract. Initially I thought it was for dampening them, but I’m starting to think it was the old grease that hardened. Other than that those are my only issues. Was wondering if you could help. Thank you! :) Signed, Kevin Klix

Hi Kevin. Great to hear from you and thanks for watching the videos! In order: Congratulations on getting your Remington; wishing you all good things with it. My platen and rollers came from JJ Short Associates in Macedon, NY. Go to their website and email them about your needs; they'll give you a quote and instructions for sending the platen and feed rollers to them to be refurbished. Please tell Peter I said hi and thanks for all the support he's provided over the years. Regarding the U button: I'm not sure if what you're describing is a common problem. I have a few Remingtons but don't consider myself an expert on them. Best bet is to check with Richard Polt at Xavier University. Richard wrote an excellent book called The Typewriter Revolution. He's a consummate typewriter collector and an expert on Remington machines. He's also very accessible and a great asset to the typewriter community at large. If you speak to him, please tell him I said hi. Regarding the orange-brown substance: I can't say for sure what it is without having seen it but it sure sounds like old grease to me. And I can't imagine it's fulfilling any structural/mechanical role since the machines weren't designed to have weird brown substances like the one you describe. If you ascertain that it's not going to hurt the machine (first, do no harm) perhaps try dissolving the lump with gentle applications of denatured alcohol. That usually does the trick. I hope this helps. Good luck and please let me know how it goes. Happy New Year!

@@damondimarco2251 Hi Damon, I appreciate you so much for your thoughtful and long reply. You are a saint among men! I actually have found out what the issue is regarding the "U" key and the "." key. Unfortunately it is completely - and seemingly - out of my wheelhouse. The spring that adds tension to the keys of the U and . buttons are unlatched within their half moon confines. They are completely covered and are inside the housing. I can see them with a light and magnifying glass, but I cannot reach them and re-hook them to save my life, as even using a modified paperclip was still too big to fit. And it wouldn’t be wise to take the entire thing completely apart, as I’m not confident enough in my ability to put it back completely together and in functioning order. I also noticed in the process of cleaning the old grease (the stuff that was hardened and orange was, in fact, grease), the spacebar spring as got undone. Might be an easy fix, but who knows. . . . I also found a way to fix the under rollers without going to JJ. Basically I took them out, peeled off the old, crumbling rubber, and replaced them with black electrical tape, rolled up until they match rough the same size the rubber once was roughly a millimeter wide coming away form the metal rollers) - it seems that was the closes to rubber I could find. Fixed the issue perfectly! The platen is hard still, but very much still useable. I’m not sure at this point what I can do about this machine. I do not want to send it out to a person for repair, as that will easily cost an arm and a leg. I bought the machine for 40 bucks. Not bad for a little project. But I’m not sure I can resurrect it. :'( If you have any further advice or information to help me, that would be greatly appreciated. Signed, Kevin Klix

At the 30 degree bend there is a strong magnet to hold a nail in place so you can strike it with a hammer and not hit your fingers....well....that magnet will stick to the back of the and lean back at 30 degrees, perfect to hold up your paper. If you can't find one contact me and I will pick one up for you. I'm thinking cotton ribbon do you agree for this machine?

I recently bought this typewriter from a flea market, but the carriage doesn’t slide when I press the space bar or any keys except the backspace key. There doesn’t seem to be any other issues with the typewriter. Do you know what might be causing the issue? Thank you

Hi nurihan. It’s almost impossible to tell what’s going on without a physical examination of the machine. However, from what you’re describing, it could be the following: First, check to make sure the carriage string or strap is connecting the main spring to the carriage. I’ve done a video about this which shows how to solve this problem. I hope you find it helpful. Failing that, check for obstruction along the carriage rails. Do this by depressing the carriage release lever and sliding the carriage back and forth. If you can do this without issue, the carriage rails aren’t the problem. If the above two points check out, it means there might be something wrong with the machine’s escapement. That’s a more complicated issue and something you should take to a seasoned typewriter technician to see if it can be repaired. I hope this helps. Please keep in touch and let me know how it goes. And thanks for watching!

I found one of these (model 1) in my grandparents attic, whenever I press the space key the carriage doesn't move & I can't figure it out :(

Upon further inspection I found a wire that has been snapped in the back/underneath but I'm not sure where the string should run through. Need help!

Hi@@marvinnnthemartian. I was going to say, it's either the carriage lock switch is engaged or the carriage string snapped. Sounds like the carriage string. See if this video helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oobGgaJqdslrn7c

I have the same Model 1 Remington, but it has a busted line spacing mechanism. Is there a place where I can get a replacement? Great videos by the way. Saludos.

Hi Daniel. Ah, the line spacing mechanism. Such a pleasure to wrestle with that little doo-dad. Okay, not really. That's a pretty specialized part. I'd say your best best is to call up a typewriter repair business near you and ask if they have something that can help you. You might also try enthusiast groups in chat rooms on Reddit, Facebook, and so on. Someone might have an extra they can send you. Let me know how it goes and thanks for watching!

I have a question for you. Can you get your machine to make ";" by doing the 'comma, backspace, shift+period' trick? I've got a Noiseless Model 10 Standard (same keys), and I cannot for the life of me get it to work.

@@CreateX3-DamonDiMarco Well shucks. I'm really confused about my machine then, as it has no semicolon key. I wouldn't have thought anyone would produce a typewriter with _no_ way to make one.

Hi. I consulted typewriter database. Get to know it. It will help you! typewriterdatabase.com/Remington.Model+1.42.bmys From what I can see, your machine was probably made between 1938 and 1939, but see for yourself. In ay event, congratulations on getting a great machine!
