Glad you’re having a great experience with Grand Design. I had a new 2019 Grand Design Reflection and it was a disaster. The tandem axles were misaligned (wheels towed in on one side and canted out on the other side), substituted 1/2” floor board in lieu of 3/4” spec (this resulted in the edge trim rubbing a hole on the main floor laminate). The plastic vent cover gear box and plastic furnace squirrel cage blew up. They were too lazy to sweep the roof for debris and particles so a granular pebble poked a hole in the TSP membrane causing water to penetrate the roof board. Random screws were coming loose and disappearing form the bottom skirts. Customer support for non You Tubers was scant. Honestly it was a miserable experience that I will never forget. I have since ordered and taken delivery of a 2022 Newmar, London Aire. The difference in customer service support, quality engineering and design between Grand Design an Newmar is like pee wee T ball and Major League Baseball. What’s my point? 1. I took exception to piss poor customer support and amateur engineering from Grand Design. 2. Given the opportunity, you might give Newmar a try. They will impress.

An efficient and quality way to do your "light check" Have your truck running (idling). Then on your headlights with high beams on. While those are on also turn on your emergency flashes. Do a walk around your entire rig. All necessary lights are on and should be functioning. Easy! Back up lights are the only extra step.

Just a thought.. brake away connected to truck and not hitch. I just saw an Anderson crushed and if the hitch isn’t installed correctly or fails and comes out of the truck, at least the brake away is connected to the truck to engage the trailer brakes. I realize you have been doing this forever but I changed this for me when I saw that hitch fail.

You might consider attaching the breakaway cable to something other than the hitch assembly. If the hitch itself or connection to the truck were to fail, the brakes might not apply in an emergency. It’s pretty unlikely, but can happen.
@rustythompson Жыл бұрын
Chad, my wife and I enjoy your videos. I like the techie ones, we both enjoy the travel vids. I am assuming that the large 2 conductor cable you connected from the front of the RV to the truck (@1:26) are to enable charging the batteries from the truck while driving. I have implemented truck charging with 1/0 cable and Anderson connectors. Currently my trailer-to-truck connection is a ~ 10 foot cable attached to the 5th wheel with an Anderson connector that connects into the truck bed near the 7-way connector. Assuming you added the trailer connector yourself, how did you get a cable from inside the storage bay to the outside connector and attach the connector itself? What type of connectors did you use? I like the idea of having a totally removable cable between the truck and trailer to avoid the potential of having someone steal $100 of 1/0 tinned OFC cable when the trailer is in storage.
@rustythompson Жыл бұрын
For anyone interested, I sent my question to Chad via email and this was his (super quick) response: Hi, Rusty! That’s the interface between the Volta alternator in the truck (proprietary 60V alternator) and the Volta Power System in the RV. It provides about 6KW of power while driving - enough to power all of our AC units and still charge the Volta battery bank. It was installed by Volta, so I’m not sure how they routed the cables. The cable I hook up fro travel comes completely off and is stored when camped. Right now, we are still testing a prototype of this system and are expecting final updates to it next week. Shortly after that, we’ll have a video about it.. 😊 Hope that helps!

Great video, again. A few people have chastised Chad for connecting the breakaway cable to the hitch instead of the truck itself. I have always attached to the hitch, and never felt unsafe. So, let's think about this. 1. If you look at trailer attachment failures, they are almost always due to human error. The ONE TIME you forget to check that safety pin that makes you make sure your hitch is fully engaged and latched, is the time it will fail, and you'll drop your trailer onto the bed rails. 2. Other failures, such as an actual weld or material failure are extremely rare. The failure of the pucks or pins or rails or bolts are just not things that seems to be a popular point of failure. Ignoring all of that, let's look at when the worst happens and your 5er separates from your tow vehicle. Let's say that someone has tampered with the pins or puck locks that hold your hitch into the bed of your truck, you hit a large bump, and everything slides out the back of your bed because you don't have a tailgate. Worst possible scenario. A fifth wheel will immediately drop it's nose to the ground. Most likely your fancy SnapPads(TM) will provide very little cushioning of the blow, and immediately be ripped from the landing gear. If the angle is severe enough, the hitch could land next, but likely the front edge of the RV at the landing gear will be next. Either will have anywhere from 1500 to 4000 pounds of pin weight forcing it to the pavement, providing lots of friction to "slow" the RV. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but highly unlikely, for the breakaway braking to really make a difference at this point. This is very different from a travel trailer, or other bumper pull trailer, in that the angle is not nearly as severe as a fifth wheel, and could continue sliding for hundreds of feet if hitch failure happens at highway speed. I guess I'm saying that where you connect your breakaway cable for a 5th wheel to avoid a very rare condition may not be that big of a deal when considering the rarity of such a failure and the consequences. Of course all of you pulling 5ers carry a torque wrench and check all of the mounting and pivot bolts on your hitch. Right? RIGHT??
