I think, when the banker is expecting the talking response to come from the friend/mom, it feels to the banker that she should look to that person where the talking will come from. I think, I would have had to be told, once, to address the customer directly. Then I would have realized, I hope, what a dismissive jerk I was being, and not need to be told again. Thank you for this video, so the first time I am the banker, I'll already know not to fall for the feeling that I should look to where I'm expecting the talking to come from. Thank you for giving people an opportunity to learn and do better.

I'm not deaf but I do have alot of trouble with verbal speaking (situational mutism) and I can relate to the people talking to your parent/etc instead of you so much😩 They really think just because it takes a little longer or there's an extra step it's not worth it and it's so infantilising. Hate it💀

The one with missing the conversation also happens to hearing kids in immigrant families who don't know the other language, so relatable lol. Also the hands full reminded me of being at the dentist, when they ask you questions right before sticking their hands in your mouth so you can't talk!

The first one, omg. I had a recent horrible encounter. I was trying to check in for an urgent appointment since I had a concerning health issue pop up. I brought my mom with me for support. The front desk lady was so rude. I kept signing I was deaf, and I was typing on my phone for her, and she was just like, "I can't understand you!" She also refused to grab anything to write down for me and instead got mad when I had no idea what she was saying. Then she figured out that my mom was with me and called her up to the counter. My mom answered her real quick then sat back down because it's not her job to communicate for me unless I ask her to. That day, she was there for support only. The lady just got increasingly frustrated with me and kept calling my mom back to the desk several times. Took several minutes to check in. After the appointment, I'm still behind the doors because I have to check out. Lady still refused to accommodate me, and instead called my mom up, and had her come all the way around so she could speak to her instead. Made me so mad. What makes it worse, I had to come back a week later to pay this extra charge they put on my account. My mom waited in the car this time. I go up, and lo and behold, the freaking lady pulls out her notepads (which have been there the whole time at the last appointment) and writes down for me. Since she decided to accommodate me this time, it only took a few minutes. Last time would have taken only a few minutes too if she would have grabbed her notepads in the first place. The second one. Ugh. Not only do I have to deal with this on a daily basis, I have been dealing with it a lot lately from my family. My sister, who knows I can't hear, has decided to believe that I am not deaf. I am making it worse than it really is, and I need to stop being offensive against the family and stop attacking the family when all I said was, "It would mean the world to me if my family learned ASL for me". All this summer, family outings have been horrible. I feel isolated and like I'm not even there. I have no clue what anyone is saying, and no one will accommodate me or include me in the conversation. I have nearly cried a few times. After having several serious conversations with my wonderful mother who are already tries her best, she has stepped up and started including me in the conversations and telling me what's going on. My sister has noticed this. Hopefully she can start figuring out that I truly am deaf. "My deaf ass". I'm crying. I can totally relate. When I was staying at my parents, my mom had to get me many times because I cannot hear the timer on the stove anymore. I have my dog who usually alerts me to sounds like someone at the door, but she's losing her hearing too now with old age. Just the other day, I had the maintenance guy come over. I obviously did not hear him and neither did my dog. It wasn't until he made a noise that my dog could hear that she started barking and shaking the bed. I was laying down. I get up, see that he is here, and go to find him. I popped out and cheeringly said good morning! I probably spooked him. He greeted me back and said he knocked, and no one came. He apologized for coming in not knowing I was here. The fourth one. If I use my voice, I sign some too. But when my hands are full, I'm like uh....... The fifth one. My mom. Sometimes she's getting ready for bed, or is in a dark room, or goes into a dark room. She does not know any sign and I know little, so I'm trying to read her lips and I can't. Thank you for this video! (I just remembered one lady at one of my old jobs. I was moved to another station because there was not any work where I was at. The manager there, upon learning I was deaf, immediately started slowly and overexaggerating saying "Taaaaaaable....." As she patted the table, then went to different objects patting them, "Driiiiiiiiiiink........Boooooooooox.........." I was so caught off guard because no one had ever done that to me before.)

I really enjoyed this and I appreciate you making these videos for us. I've been hard of hearing since birth and it's gotten worse over the years. I've never met anyone else like me. While I can hear, per se... Everything sounds like it's underwater or something. All the sounds blur together and I rely heavily on lip reading. It has been difficult with the masks over the last few years. I'm really so happy to have found your channel! Teary over here!! I use BSL due to situational mutism and general autism, plus auditory hallucinations sometimes make it hard to hear actual things that are going on sometimes as well as tinnitus! But literally no one around me knows it or even tries to, I've offered to teach it, I've suggested going to classes together, etc etc. But no one in my family or close friends will really make an effort, so when it kicks in and I just can't talk, I use sign sparingly knowing they don't understand it but having to do something to feel even a tiny bit included, my brother even sometimes makes fun of me signing. When it kicks in around public people, there is literally nothing I can do, I still have to go places with my mum as well as my assistance dog, and she has to talk for me and explain things to me bc i can't understand or respond sometimes. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for you, being deaf and having this happen; I know even though I can hear it's frustrating enough to not be able to communicate properly! Thank you for sharing as always, your videos are always good to watch, and I'm glad you've got your mum to help even when people are being so rude! :)

I'm deaf and some people talking as I use live Transcribe that can use in samsung phone to read what people saying.. but being deaf is great life. Peace and quiet when it noise etc.. ahh lovely peace with feet up 😊

So if the person you are encountering say at the bank, doesn't know sign language you want them to speak to the deaf person, but the other person will translate their reply? I seen that if you don’t know sign language to tend to talk to the verbal person and not the deaf because you don’t understand them. When talking to my deaf teacher for ASL I always talk to my verbal teacher then try to communicate with my deaf teacher for my classes to help me understand what the teacher is saying. The way the lady was speaking in a loud tone it was a bit rude.
