Typing tips: How to Type More Accurately!

One thing that I didn’t mention is 100% accuracy shouldn’t be your goal when you’re trying to type your fastest - it’s a trade off between speed and accuracy, and if you’re typing with 100% acc, chances are you can move your fingers a little faster and it’s worth it if your acc decreases 0.3% or whatever.

I use the Dvorak keyboard layout, which is an alternate arrangement of the keys. So, for example, when I press the “j” key, “h” is what is registered.

What you say about 100% not being your goal depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're taking a speed test you're correct, but if you're doing actual work, then accuracy should be your goal-because having to go back and correct your mistakes takes away any time you've saved by typing fast.

^ This. It costs time and mental bandwidth. Virtually my sole reason for wanting to increase my typing speed is to be able to type fast enough to capture my thoughts before they slip away. Error correction increases the cognitive load of typing and makes it even more likely that thought might slip away before you've fully expressed it.

When I read ahead I always end up hitting the keys for future words rather than the word I'm on. But it's usually a specific letter. Like I mix up P and F a lot in the dvorak keyboard, so if I have to type "part from" I'll most likely end up typing "fart prom" which is way less pleasant.

I got a really good tip that works for me, thank to John, I mean, The whole world focuses and says that focus on your accuracy not on your speed, and I also did it, and that reallly helped me, I mean from that I can type more than 70 wpm, and doing that again and again made me type more than 80 wpm, I even got a pb of 102 wpm, now I am trying to type all of my typings more than 100 wpm, but doing that accuracy method didn't help me, so I planned about searching in youtube, How to improve your accuracy in typing" and you're video came, so I watched that, and you won't believe, I didn't listend a single thing what you said, I just focusing on on your speed, and I planned, that what will my fingers and my brain will do if I type so fast, so I typed and impossibly, I got 99 wpm with an accuracy of 92.(something) and I was really happy and I planend that now I have to focus on speed if I want to get 100 wpm, and the accuracy will work automatically, if my hands are capable to type faster.

Hi John. Thank you very much for making these videos. I'm looking to get into Dvorak layout because I type 8 hours a day and I hands are in pain so I wanted to optimize my typing. But I'm really concerned about the Windows shortcuts because I use shortcuts a lot in my work, and I cannot afford to having to relearn shortcuts and frankly they are not placed optimally in Dvorak. Do you know anyway to have Dvorak layout but Windows shortcuts behave in Qwerty layout?

go to the search bar in the bottom left of your screen and search "language settings" and click enter, on this page, you will see "Preferred Language" and under this, click on whatever language you are using then click "Options". Thanks for your insight, John. Hope that it is okay to share the following: 1. I cannot get enough of Typeracer! It is my go-to typing program. However, I wonder if the reason why I make so many errors is because my mind is predisposed to expect them? 2. In order to increase my typing speed from its typical 47-to-50 wpm to 75-90 wpm, I have been using the repeating words section of the program. In the wake of doing so, I have increased my speed, but I still cannot go through the repeating patterns without making a mistake and thereby lessening my typing speed. 3. I have observed where if I can press with a fluidic motion from one key to the next, the typing seems to have more of a flow and the speed increases slighty, as opposed to the press first key hard...then wait...then press the next key. An analogous example of what I am referring to would be when a person has a watch with a second hand that continuously moves versus a quartz watch with the "stop, then move" motion. Would LOOOOVE to hear comments on how to resolve these long-standing issues. Thanks.

Is this good idea to use Dvorak layout for programming? There are many times needs to use (), {}, [], " ", ' ', dots, colons and semicolons. Also characters like &, #, ?, _ and so on. Is this worth it to switch from qwerty to another keyboard layout?

Yeah, dvorak is just as good for programming as qwerty. There's also a variant of dvorak designed for coding called programmers dvorak but I know next to nothing about it

It's not really worse than qwerty (as far as speed is concerned), but it's not much better either. There are other mods of layouts (like Polish for programmers) that put these symbols in more convenient places but overall it's not really something you should worry about. Now on the question if it's worth switching, what you _should_ be worried about rsi, carpal tunnel and stuff like that, since you spend a great portion of your time typing. Dvorak (but other alternative layouts too) are far less strenous to type on so in the long run you'll be doing your hands a favour to switch

I bought the bluetooth keyboard you have about a year ago so i could type on my phone, it has a crazy ammount of deck keyboard making it super hard to accurately type, also some of the keys dont register as it uses a butterfly style keyboard meaning if any lint or dust gets in it overtime the keyboard will have some seriously bad ghosting or double accuating problem. the worst part is there is really no way to propperly clean it since the rubber domes are intertwined with the butterfly style keycaps. I highly recommend anyone to not get this keyboard it is a waste of money and a piece of junk due to the poor build quality and cheap build.
