Hello, Pascal. I have a question. Is it acceptable to redesign and digitize an old typeface (letraset, berthold, etc.) and then sell it, or should this be avoided? And how do we deal with the copyright thing in this case?

During the process of reviving Berthold Nr.49, the design has undergone significant changes. Consequently, the final typeface will be different from the original one created in the 1950s. Berthold Nr.49 has not been digitized and is not copyrighted as a digital product, although the name Berthold is registered. Therefore, the upcoming superfamily of fonts that originated from Berthold Nr.49 will have a different design and a different name. Regarding Letraset or other companies that have created or distributed fonts, it is important to check if there are copyrighted materials for these fonts and whether they exist digitally or not.

It is important to note that Letraset not only created their own typefaces for dry transfer sheets but also distributed fonts from other type foundries. Therefore, it is essential to verify whether the dry transfer sheet you are examining contains a Letraset-designed typeface or if it is only reproduced by Letraset as a dry transfer font and actually belongs to another type foundry.
