Obsidian entertainment makes fantastic games! Pillars of Eternity got me into cRPG's and I just cannot play regular RPG's the same way. The amount of choice, consequences, world building, customization, and the attention to gameplay oppose to graphics is something I missed. Witcher 3 had a similar effect. I think these types of games are less known and more niche so they don't get as much exposure. I barely hear anyone talking about this game, but Dishonored 2 will have hundreds of videos on it and multiple different let's plays and exposure from the gaming media. I'm just mostly glad they are starting to make these types of games again. I hope these types of games can exist alongside bigger titles. Also great review as usual!

Have you tried Baldur's Gate? If not, do so. It looks crap compared to modenr games, but this is the game that not only single-handedly saved cRPGs (the whole genre was more or less dead back then), but also made BioWare the company they are today. Plus, the game starts with Baldur's Gate, continues in the BG expansions, then into BG2 and ends with the BG2 expansion. In other words, don't make any plans the rest of the year. Lol. (seriously, the game's a msterpiece.)

For games like this, a game that I don't know/play, I can just listen to the audio.

Well beat the game as the "Good Guys" and loved the story even tho I missed getting one of the companions. The Story was great ,except it feels half finished....I figured I would have about 20 more hours on it but nope. It felt cut off and I felt "that's it?". So the game end cutoff was a huge disappointment and lack of more companions was a mountain of a disappointment.

I totally agree with the "total tonal switch" some characters have. I noticed it right away with at the beginning of the game when Verse joins you. She brags about how she would have slit her husband's throat over breakfast, and then when asked about her dead friends, sounds like she's crying and wallowing in a mess of self-pity. Really jarring and it pulled me out of the moment so quickly, I could only think how the writing of these parts was kinda shitty instead of focusing on the game world and just getting sucked into it. No other reviews (or anywhere on the internet is this mentioned) talk about these tonal shift issues at all. That's why you are the best video game reviewer of all time. Seriously, no one comes close. I just wish there was moooar! You always hit the the nail on the head. You truly have your finger on the pulse of the video game industry, keep it up! (Please!)

Hey man, I've only seen a couple of your reviews before (for no other reason than I simply don't have time to play as many games as I'd like, so I'm in turn looking for less info about them these days). I just thought that this one, in particular, was really solid and well done. These big epic sprawling RPGs (particularly from old school isometric devs like ineXile/Obsidian/etc.) are hard to review just in and of themselves, let alone in a constrained time-frame like having to hurry up and get it out in time for the game's release to "get those clicks" or ad revenue or whatever. I thought you did a nice job with this one, great descriptions and explanations of your viewpoints. Really quality informative style, I like it. Well done, cheers!
@ACGreviews8 жыл бұрын
thanks. I don't know many reviewers who have to rush. Thats usually a consumer misinformation thing to explain reviews that don't agree with their ideas. I think maybe 6 total for me since I started
@stryk1878 жыл бұрын
ACG oh yea? I was under the wrong impression then. Do you think that will change, though? If I recall, there was some recent dust-up over one of the publishers (the exact one escapes me at the moment, but it was a bigger name "AAA" publisher) announcing that they would only give out review copies _really_ close to the street date, something like 24-48 hrs before and NO sooner. and they seemed to be firm on the "no exceptions" -- or, at least, they made the press release sound as such. That's going to be tough to get a review of a 40/50/60+ hour game out in the needed time-frame to "maximize your visibility" (i hate marketing jargon shit like that, but basically the most traffic for content of this type will be right around when the game comes out -- which makes sense)

Divinity Original Sin 2 looks to fix most of the flaws of the original. I wanted to like the original and I enjoy the enhanced edition. But I really loved the sequel. Larian are learning. As a fan of Numenera I hope it works well, I have been intentionally avoiding it in early access.

I am playing a bit on the DOS 2 alpha, and it does look good. I just hope they will do something about inventory management and trading. It is sooo annoying in that game, and in the original. Tides also looks good, and quite confusing lore. But I have no experience with that setting at all, so there are some stuff to learn. I do look forward to it :)
@lostsanityreturned8 жыл бұрын
TempestDK You can buy many books on the setting now. I own everything released so far -laughs- As for divinity, I doubt it, it is actually intentional sadly. The inventory sorting is mildly faster if you use a controller though, atleast in the first one, haven't used a controller in the second.

Thanks for this review, I was already pretty sure I was buying Tyranny but wanted to hold off until I read a few reviews (you know how Obsidian loves their release day bugs). I like Pillars but I certainly didn't love it, so I was hoping to hear that this was a step up. It sounds like Tyranny isn't exactly the next level for this rebirthed genre but instead is a slightly different perspective of the genre, and that's enough for me to give it a buy.

ya some bugs
@phero28 жыл бұрын
I'm 10 hours in or so, this title reeks quality. It's pretty much all good. 2 complaints: the loot is a bit generic and the AI for some of the companions is bugged. Specifically the woman beast, she stands around doing nothing for most of the battle no matter what AI setting you give her. I had to drop her because of that. Also, there's no stealing. Still, it reeks of quality. I had a single CTD after 8 hours of play but that was my only bug and it didn't happen after a reload.
@phero28 жыл бұрын
themushroomxdxd They throw masterworks at you, you find it in the walls, it's everywhere. It loses all meaning in the third act. Game was cut short. Took me 23 hours to finish and I went everywhere I could.
@thomasneal92918 жыл бұрын
the loot is mostly just a way of giving you cash that looks like interesting objects, as 99% of the time, you end up just selling it. They should have just had more cash drop instead. saves a step. the beastwoman thing is fixed in the latest patch (turned out it had something to do with the AI not thinking she had a weapon), but really, the AI is SOOOOO bad in this game for your characters anyway, that no matter what, you're best off just turning it off entirely and micromanaging everything. I felt the game pacing was fine... until you hit ACT III, then it really feels more like interactive credits than an actual chapter in the story. you are simply designing how the end of the game will look in the slideshow at the end in ACT III. so, I give 2/3 of the game 8/10. and that last 1/3.... 4/10. too many reviews of the game seem to have come from people who only played through a few hours of it. "Also, there's no stealing. " for a similar experience, but with turn based combat and a much more attractive game world (where you can rotate your viewpoint around), and where you can steal stuff, check out Larian's new offering Divinity: Original Sin 2. still in alpha, and they want too much to buy into that, but it's still gorgeous, and I found just about everything about it better than either Tyranny or PoE. It's just not even 1/4 fleshed out yet, but what IS there is fully playable. It's like only being able to play the first act of Tyranny at this point.

Isometric games are fun and often quite deep. But considering the production value of these games compared to third and first person games like The Witcher series, Fallout (3, NV, 4), Dishonored, Assassin's Creed series, Dark Souls series, etc., I don't think isometric games should cost any more than around $29.99. I'm not a game developer or designer so I'm sure there's a ton involved that I don't see. But isometric games just seem like gaming-lite to me from a technical standpoint. I will definitely buy this once it goes on sale, but don't see myself paying $44.99 for it. Thanks for the awesome review as usual.

actually since you have non procedural animation routines and various other issues some of them require more man hours. Not inlcuding writing and such. Very hard

Well as all things there are pros and cons, with isometric it's quicker and easier to create new assets, but animation, enviroinment interaction etc is a nightmare, while with full 3D Assets take longer to be made, but then it's much easier to get them to interact with the world.

This game looks almost Mortal Kombat-esque in some way. Setting, character design, even some of the mechanics; like, if there ever was an MK RPG, I'd pretty much expect it to be like this.

agreed. That it does

Of course there's also the very obvious parallels to the Heretic Kingdoms ARPG series :-D .

tyranny is great i enjoyed it so much, the thing is... is too short it kind of ends when everything is starting to get intense. It needs an expansion.

Ahhh hahahaha that opening line was targeted at IGN. Love it!!

I have to say, sound is always my favorite aspect of your pieces. It is such an undervalued part of what makes a title. That said, you heard Skyrim SE's compression?
