I live in Minnesota, USA, so use my comment accordingly. In the far north of the United States, such as where I live, we get extreme winter weather. Lots of snow and ice, and almost just as importantly, extreme cold. Days or weeks on end below zero Fahrenheit, and even -30+ degrees F & C. That’s REALLY cold. With all of that said, I SWEAR by Nokian winter tires. They’re a little difficult to get here, and I usually have to order them online and have them shipped to me, but they are so worth it. I have used Blizzaks, I’ve used Michelins, I’ve used Goodyears, and even General winter tires. Nothing compares to the Nokian tires that are designed, tested and developed in the extreme northern territories of Finland, Sweden and Russia. These guys really know what they’re doing. Nokian winter tires are designed for people who live in and drive in REAL winter weather. If you live in London, Seattle, or Los Angeles, this probably isn’t for you. If you live in Buffalo, NY, or Minneapolis, MN where I am, or any other northern area of the world with a significant winter, you absolutely have to consider Nokian. You can ill afford to drive your slush box around on all-season tires when the weather gets serious. All-season tires are a hoax, a fraud. They’re not all-season anything, unless you live in Arizona. Don’t buy into it. Get yourself some real winter tires and thank me later when you arrive home alive. Also, I don’t work for Nokian, I promise. I drive a semi truck for Coca-Cola.... in case anyone is wondering. Cheers!

Concurred on all points. No such thing as an all season in Canada, unless you live on Vancouver Island, and even then you can get some nasty squalls. I've had Blizzaks (which we run on our ambulances all year long), X-ice, Nordic's (goodyear) and now the Hakkapeliitta's. Nothing comes close to the Nokians. Last winter (this year still...) we had two weeks of the highest temperature reaching -10f, and our nightly lows at -40f/c with windchills of -63c/ -81f

@aero Blizzak LT is what I'm reading on the tire right now. We're in Calgary. Too many ambulances to store tires for, so they just run winters all year as it's our longest season. 6 tires on each truck, and I have no idea how many trucks we're running, so it makes sense. As for stability... Meh. Don't get up to speed that often as they're not easy to slow down, or corner for that matter.

Last year, in Huntsville, Ontario, we had 3 civics on a steep, snowy, icy driveway from hell. Blizzaks, a no name, and Hakkepelita R3s were the tires. The R3 was the best, it could go up the driveway from a standing start. We tested them on the rutted, icy roads. They all worked but the R3 won. With snows and a great handling front wheel drive car, I drive the same speeds summer and winter.

In the past 10 years I've driven on GOODYEAR ULTRAGRIP ICE 2 (two sets, two cars) which for me has been a great all round tyre without any serious downsides. Before, I had winter tyres which were great in snow/ice but dangerous on dry/wet asphalt. I will buy the same set again for my next car unless there is a better alternative available.

In Stockholm there are many still preferring the studded tires. However, it seems that the need of them is long gone. I previously had the Goodyear Ultragrip Extreme and now I’m running the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice Arctic which were overkill for the slushy trip to Åre from last winter. Looking at the upcoming weather forecast in Stockholm, rain is to be expected even throughout December. Certainly this will be my last studded set, at least until I will plan weekly trips to Kiruna to make proper use of them.

It really amazes me how we still have the debate , do the winter tyres work or do we need them. I work for an organisation where being mobile is essential, yet all our vehicles have summer tyres. When I speak to management about it, I always get told "we should be fine , because all our vehicles are 4x4" . Clearly having fourt tyres spinning and not going anywhere is much better than having two tyre spinning. Also it is insane how no one even considers stopping, everyone is just thinking of going forward and never stopping.

I live in western Canada and put winter tires on my car for the very first time three years ago. They were just some cheap Chinese things but wow what a difference compared to the all-season tires I always ran before. Anyone that says winter tires are a scam has obviously never used winter tires before. The cheapest winter tire will be better than the best all season in cold weather winter conditions from what I experienced. Got myself some Toyo GSi-6 Observe tires for my Audi S5 this year and I'm eagerly awaiting the first snowfall to try them out.
@Sn0ws5194 жыл бұрын
@aero Availability mostly. I bought my S5 mid October and it came with performance summer tires so I was kinda desperate to find something that would fit the size I had before it started snowing. Here’s my points for why to invest in winter tyres... & I live in the SE of England!!! 1. Twice a year, you have an opportunity to properly inspect your car tyres all over. How many single set tyre owners ever get to do that? 2. The difference on black ice/frost between having half a chance with winters & no chance with a summer tyre is a very expensive one in terms of insurance, time car is off the road & personal health 3. Considering you have 4 patches of rubber between you & your maker, supporting +1 ton of metal at speed over constantly changing surfaces... why anyone would want to gamble with their life escapes me 4. A very cost effective way of initial winter tyre ownership is to purchase a nearly new (6/7mm minimum tread premium brand) winter tyres & alloys from eBay ... preferably during the spring / summer when prices are at their cheapest. 99% of those I know who’ve tried winter tyres will never now use summer tyres over winter 5. It’s an EU legal requirement in many countries if you drive in Europe to have M&S logo on your tyres between Oct-March. You get pulled for speeding, it’s one of the first things they check in Germany... no need to ask how I know

Here in Colorado it depends on where you're going with your vehicle. Standard winter tires are fine along what we call the Front Range...where most people live. Now if you plan on or spend a lot of time in the hills and mountains during the winter months, you really should consider a set of studded tires. I personally run studded tires during our winter months. This gives me more options such as event up in the mountains during icy conditions. Now studded tires are not that suitable for dry pavement. This is something to consider if this vehicle is your daily driver and its not always snowing/icing. I run studded tires on my daily driver but I'm in a situation where I have 2-3 other good running vehicles. So when the weather is quite warm, I drive my other vehicles leaving my winter vehicle at home. If it matters, my daily driver/winter vehicle is a modded 2016 WRX. I drive that vehicle year around but especially in the winter months.

I struggle with this in Southern Ontario Canada... the winters here can vary so much in every season. One winter its mostly -20C then suddenly +10C with either tons of snow, almost no snow or several snow dumps.
@valde33364 жыл бұрын
I'd think that if mostly -20c and tons of snow can be a normal winter you should get Nordic winter tires (studless as it can also be +10c). Just drive a bit more carefully in warm and wet conditions. If you get something else then you need to be very careful in the snow and ice. Basically drive according to the tires you have.

I’m in the northeast of England, I was swapping my tires for winter but now use Goodyear all season. I found that unless it snows, which we don’t really get much of, winter tyres just aren’t good enough in wet and dry, a good all season is a much better choice, if you want to still swap your tires to gain an advantage in summer still swap them but use the all season not the full winter.

First winter it went brilliant, the wet grip, snow grip, noise level, wear off - all perfect. Before I had Continental TS850 and Good Year UG Ice 2. For both of them my only the best comments, very good and reliable tyres, were used on highways and urban roads. For UG Ice 2 the low noise level was a pleasure to drive, the same with LM005 now. I am trying to make a decision about my choice of seasonal tyre and my thanks for the specific information and the point about cold/wet conditions as opposed to snow. Sensible and helpful. However having now watched a host of different videos and read lots of reviews I rate yours most helpful. I suggest that there should be less mention of 'speed', which is always relevant to prevailing conditions and circumstances. Correct speed and observation are keys to safe driving and I accept that improved tyre performance are very useful in helping us all to stay safe. High performance tyres do not prevent collisions. Remember, the faster you are travelling when it goes pear-shaped, the greater the consequences. Thank you again for the helpful advice in your videos. Drive safely.

Other SUVs on summer tyres couldn’t make it up even gentle hills and were sliding at traffic lights. I had to ferry my neighbours to the shops for a couple of days. I live in Montreal Canada. I had Nokian on one of my previous cars and they were great. Best of all is they lasted a long time (over 6 years and around 60,000 km). I gave them to my dad and he used them for a further 40,000 km. I then went with Bridgestone ws70 and ws80. Although grip on ice and snow were on par with Nokian, the Bridgestone barely lasted 3 years (20,000 km) each. I currently have the Conti Viking7, only used for 3000km last winter. Grip is excellent on ice/snow, very silent on the highway too. BUT, grip on wet snow/ rain was absolutely horrible. I might go back to Nokian for my next set of winter tires.

I used to drive the well-proven ContiWinterContacts on my car, then I've switched to Hankook's Winter I-Cepts. They're both pretty solid tyres. But last winter my GF decided to stick with an advice from a tyre service and got herself a set of those BFGs. And man am I impressed! In wet, pouring or slush covered conditions, these things are unbeatable. I mean you can literally go to a fording depth of water on road at high speed and you won't even notice. If only they were available in 215/65 R16, they'd definitely be my next choice.

For me, the critical difference between a good and bad winter tire is the communication: A good tire is telling you it's about to cross the line and even beyond the line it gives you an idea by how much you have crossed it. Middle european winter tires in wet sleet conditions have been the worst in this, crossing is sudden and irreversible, residual grip collapses. Going downhill with a left hand corner waiting at the bottom, it's a real nasty surprise...
