This video is from previous live streams in which Tyrese Haliburton said Andrew Wiggins (The Golden State Warriors) is the best defender Jayson Tatum (The Boston Celtics) has seen during these playoffs. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and The Golden State Warriors just beat Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and The Boston Celtics in Game 5 of The NBA Finals. What do we think about the take?

“Andrew Wiggins is the worst defensive matchup Tatum has had to deal with so far in these playoffs” should be the quote. While he is not a better overall defender than holiday, Wiggins is a worse matchup for Tatum. Wiggins length and athleticism affect during and right before the shot/finishes more so than holiday can.

spot on! it's exactly why bjelica had success against tatum in game 4. he's not a great defensive player, but he has size and knows how to use his size to disrupt jt. wiggs actually has athleticism and has always been a good defensive player. but he's become a great defensive player since joining the warriors. i think wiggs held luka to 51% during that series and that was the worst fg% a player held luka to during the playoffs lol. and ppl said "LuKa sTilL sHot ovEr 50%" we'll yeah, he's that damn good! anyways, yes, let's appreciate wiggs, he deserves the acknowledgment.

Defending a 6’10 all star forward, to me, suggests more than just a matchup issue. I think it is more about the moment. He never had a real chance to make a deep run in the playoffs before, and now we have some evidence. He has been a rebounding machine for the playoffs, and goes from still to strike so fast and has overall just looked mean. Well, at leaset Canadian mean.

Wiggins is so underrated on D. Can tell they haven't watched him lock up gaurds, forwards, shooters, guys who drive to the basket. A lot of games they start him on the guy they think will be the problem and then when someone else gets hot, they slide him over there to cool that guy off. Guards 1-4 extremely well and holds his own on 5's.

Tatum in the 4th quarter of games 1-5 these Finals: Game1: 0 pts 0-3 field goals Game2: 0 pts 0-1 FG Game3: 8 pts 3-7 FG Game4: 3 pts 1-5 FG Game5: 5 pts 1-5 FG Has 18 turnovers total for the series which is the most by anyone on either team. He's average 3 ppg and shooting 24% in the 4th quarter (5-21) yet I've seen many Celtics fans saying Tatum has been amazing in the Finals. Talk about delusional. Wiggins has shut this man down in the 4th quarter. Wiggins deserved his all-star start and he's become the best 2 way shooting guard in the game.

Can you imagine if LeBron had 4th Quarter stats like that IN ANY playoff series, let alone the Finals? It would be the biggest story in basketball of the year! I am just saying it's crazy how magnified stats become for guys like LeBron and KD. I think people are giving Tatum a pass because he's young. And also, there are certain guys that give some superstars a nightmare. Wiggins is definitely a perfect mold of defender for Tatum.

It's surprising - considering his frame - but I was just thinking the same thing. He's really good at holding off bigger players down low, and jumping 2 or 3 times before anyone else reacts when grabbing a rebound. Wiggins always had a ridiculous motor and athleticism (parked in neutral too often mind you), but he's got a bit of Rodman in him too with how quickly he gets to rebounds. He's shinning brightly because of who he's been able to cover, and so effectively. He was also half-a-step too late defensively for most of his career (trying to block 3pts too often); he looked lost. But now, he's finally figuring it out. He's even starting to direct his teammates defensively; he WAS NOT doing that in Minnesota or even last year.

I agree with you, specifically in college. But he was lost on defense during his run with the Timberwolves. Coming out of college, he was thought of as being a sure thing on defense, more than whatever he could do offensively. Wiggins always had the motor, athleticism, wingspan, etc., to become a great defensive player, but his defensive IQ didn't match his tools until recently. Honestly, I thought by this point of his career, he'd be in line with Kawhi on defense. @@goeast12 Why are you stat mining only focusing on the good portion of his stats, I dont care about his three point shooting any more than i care about his % from long twos, I care about his overall shooting % which has not been good. If I score 30 ppg on 14 FG%, isnt that obviously worse than someone who scores 26 ppg on 45 FG%? However, if I just hid the %'s, then there is no way to judge between the two. I dont think you're doing it on purpose, maybe your just a Tatum fan, but I hope you realize that you're not doing a fair compaison when you 1) completely ignore overall efficiency in your first statement and 2) focus on a subsection of efficiency for no reason whatsoever except to make Tatums efficiency look better than it actually is.

@@goeast12 To be clear, I dont think that Wiggins is outplaying Tatum this series. There is only a 2% difference in true shooting, while Tatum has averaged 6 more assists and only 2 less rebounds per game. All of that while facing the entire attention of the Warriors team as the Celtics N.1 option (while Wiggins is the N.3 option). I just think your reasoning is . . . poor.

Jrue Holiday is 6'3" and can guard 1-4, and play some godly help defense on 5's, but for the specific defensive assignment of Tatum Wiggins is better suited. On top of that at this stage in his career he just has more energy, and constant disruption is almost as important as having competent defensive feet. He's also not the primary scorer or a high volume facilitator. For this series he's slowly become the 2-3 option because Poole is limited by his defensive liability and Klay has not been as dangerous as he'll be for Game 6.

There are so many factors to this super complex topic. I think the reality is the Klay and Draymond are playing a key role in this "Wiggin's Elite Defense" take. They are attacking Tatum on his drives forcing him to play make, and Tatum hasn't always made the proper decision. Klay and Draymond are removing those offensive options from Tatum's arsenal. They are playing hard defense on Brown, Smart, Horford, etc. Overall, the Warriors are just throwing bodies at Tatum. Constantly different looks with 4 or 5 guys guarding him at random times. And just forcing him to make the tough play. If Tatum was attacking to score, this series would have a completely different result. And that's the only way I see them winning. And I'm a Piston's fan saying this. I think it was similar to how Boston played KD in the Nets series.

I always tell my JV kids, that to have a path to success on offense or defense, you don’t have to be perfect. You have to be bigger than the guys that are quicker than you, and you have to be quicker than the guys that are bigger than you. Then, as long as you have one of those advantages, you have to be smarter than them in order to dictate where action takes place. Tatum is enough bigger than Jrue that he really has an avenue to take advantage of Jrue. With Wiggins length and athleticism, Tatum does not have any easy avenues of advantage. And then Wiggins overachieved and that was that.
