It's the mid-90s. I'm about 5. My grandpa has this installed on his computer (probably from my uncle who was early 20s). I play this game and become addicted. Years go by and I forget the name of the game. But this song remains engrained in my memory. Finally, after years of searching for this game by any means necessary, I find it again and download it for free on GoG. I load up this level, the music kicks on....and I am about 23 years younger.

Much better than the MIDI music in Tyrian 2000!
@The-Zer0th-Law4 жыл бұрын
Except it's still MIDI. The difference is really on the soundcard or soundfonts.
@audunskilbrei82793 жыл бұрын
@@The-Zer0th-Law It`s FM synthesis not MIDI. Although I have to admit my knowledge is limited on this subject so far all I know FM synthesis may be a form Of MIDI. What I mean is the OP meant that this FM version is better than the MIDI version(and I agree) which is unusual. In most dos games from this era the music would usually be much better when played in midi mode.
@The-Zer0th-Law3 жыл бұрын
@@audunskilbrei8279 More specifically: different sound hardware had different ways of interpreting MIDI instructions, and the result of the way they interpret makes the music seem different. An example of that is if you playback a MIDI file in certain pre-android phones and compare what they sound like, you'll notice that Nokia for one sounded better than Windows' Sound Font..
@audunskilbrei82793 жыл бұрын
@@The-Zer0th-Law kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoabZqhmeq9lr9E This video shows he difference in duke 3d between adlib, which I think is a form of FM synthesis, and General Midi. In this case the MIDI sounds much better.
@vurpo70803 жыл бұрын
The OPL3 (this sound chip) didn't natively do anything with MIDI. It only did programmable FM synthesis. There were software drivers that could take General MIDI data and make an OPL3 produce music based on it, which made it easier for developers to make music for a wide range of hardware though. Game music programmed directly for the OPL3 (such as this one here) often sounded much better than those General MIDI game soundtracks on an OPL3 did, because they often took greater advantage of the range of sounds the OPL3 can produce. Those MIDI drivers I mentioned just came with a set of predefined instruments so the MIDI soundtracks couldn't use any other sounds.

This song deserves to be there along with Mario Theme and other icons. Truly the limitations of the technology brought up the best in musical composition. I mean the tunes are simple in Tyrian OST but their construction is so vividly visible you can clearly see the inner workings of the composition. Absolutely love the whole soundtrack, for me this is formative stuff!
