"you're my son" as intended by Tywin clearly seems to be double-edged, he means it in the sense of Tyrion's status. Sending his son (as opposed to his brother or some other Lannister) means he carries the weight of Tywin himself. But he also is clearly manipulating Tyrion's emotions here also to suit his needs. As much as he chooses to wrongly overlook his children's personal desires, he understands how they function under normal circumstances better than I think is recognized. It's the times when they act outside of how he traditionally has seen that Tywin's understanding fails him in all three cases (after Jaime's capture and mutilation, after Joffrey's murder for Cersei, and after Tyrion is sentenced to death).

But once he has some breathing room, he goes back to hating on him, and tries to have him killed. And everything he claims to hate Tyrion for? The whoring, the lying, the arrogance? Tywin is guilty of the exact same thing, only WORSE because he is under the delusion that he isn't. And ultimately, that's why Tywin hates Tyrion. He isn't beautiful. The ugliness of his house can't be covered up with aesthetics and platitudes, and it reminds Tywin that the "nobility" of house Lannister is all a smoke-screen. Lann the Clever was an underhanded bastard, Jamie and Cersei aren't very smart (cunning and capricious, but not intelligent) and are guilty of some Borgia-level perversion, and Tywin ran his family's gold dry and whores with the SAME WHORE he berates Tyrion for loving.

She talks about some parts of Tywin we never got to see, like how he smiled when he killed the last Tarbecks, when he wed Joanna and when his twins were born. One of her best lines is how she tells Jaime that Tyrion is Tywins son, the one most like him, as Jaime is more like his uncle's and his mother(as he has true empathy and kindness). Apparently, when she said the same to Tywin, he refused to speak to him for half a year. This scene is even more tense in the books, because when Tywin says ‘You are my son.’, there is the implication that he means ‘You are my only son.’ He put more trust in Tyrion because he needed to in order to continue his legacy.

I absolutely adore this scene. It’s the only scene off the top of my head that I think Tyrion and Tywin actually get along and agree on something. They were both talking strategy and if they put their differences aside more often they would’ve been a force. Tywin and Tyrion together scheming would’ve been almost impossible to stop.

The way that you get the sell in the show and you feel how convincing it is that Tywin may actually respect and care for his son but in the books you can read Tyrion's thoughts and he immediately guesses that this respect has only come about because his brother has been captured and Tywin now has no other choice for the next head of House Lannister after he's gone. Which is all his father really cares about.

This was the closest moment that I actually see Tywin feared losing the war with Jaime losing half of his army & he himself being taken hostage. If only Stan is focused on teaming up with Robb to defeat what's left of Tywin's army instead of obsessing over king's landing the ending would have been much different
@TrackerRoo8 ай бұрын
Robb's mistake was not brokering a deal with the Martels, Tyrells and Baratheons. King of the North shouldn't have been about one kingdom breaking free. But all breaking free. No one liked the Lannisters and no one liked being tethered to King's Landing. Give everyone what they want by going back to seven kingdoms. Stannis can have King's Landing, Casterly Rock could go to Renly. And the Martels would have their revenge on the House that killed members of their family. Robb was great at military tactics. But he was not a good politician.

I was just thinking that myself. If Tywin has cared for Tyrion the same way he did about Jamie, the two of them together would have been nigh unstoppable. @Egobyte832 жыл бұрын
"You are my son". That is such a clever red herring. To the casual onlooker, it appears as if Tywin wants to say that he cares for Tyrion with those words. However, seasoned veterans of the show know better. Tywin hates Tyrion with every fiber of his being and would wish for nothing else than for him to never even having been born, but BECAUSE he is a Lannister and more to the point, his own son, Tywin wants to put him in places of power because in the end, what's good for Tyrion is good for the Lannister family. That's the thing, Tywin cares about nothing else but his family, it's hammered into us all throughout the show "the name, the family, his children", but the issue is that while he seeks to better them, he doesn't have genuine affection for any of them. He is the uncaring father who wants his children to succeed without necessarily loving any of them. And most certainly not Tyrion. So, the "you are my son" is not any kind of declaration of affection, it is a simple, matter-of-fact statement.
@attiepollard7847 Жыл бұрын
I say so what if he hates his son his father gave him complete orders not to bring sha to court and yet still he did not listen also he demanded to be the heir of castly Rock that really pissed his father off more.

Cunning Tywin - He bought Tyrion’s obedience and loyalty with just 4 words! He knew Tyrion’s obsession for his father’s approval and he used it! Best example of how a mere factual statement used at the right time for a right listener in the right context can weigh more than a universe between the time it was said and heard! As we know later, Tyrion was ready to fight and sacrifice himself for the people who never gave a damn about him or saw him worth anything more than a stunted fool, these 4 words being the reason! GRRM is a legend as are these two characters!!

It's an interesting dynamic. Tywin shows Tyrion a fair amount of respect and trust, which Tyrion desperately wants, but adds a requirement and Tyrion pushes against it. He knows his father extremely well, that he should be completely obedient to the most powerful man in Westeros he just... can't.
@VulpesChama Жыл бұрын
I guess what many don't see is that, despite his arrogance, Tywin isn't an idiot. And all around this table do nothing but aim to please him to not get his wrath at them. Tyrion on the other hand already has his anger, so Tyrion is not holding back on what he says. He's not afraid to speak up opposing opinions or more precisely the truth of the situation. And that's why Tywin chose him. Not because he is his son, not because he is the best suited for this. But because despite everything, Tyrion is at this point not afraid to stand his ground, he has proven to be inventive, when he showed up with the hill tribes and he has shown that despite everything he *is* loyal to the House. Tywin never send Tyrion to Kingslanding to act as Hand, but to clear the ground. To remove every Lord that my try to undermine the Lannisters claim. And that is what Tyrion does, he removes every threat towards him as soon as he gets into the city and literally builds up the claim his House has on the city. Tywin is not a loving father suddenly, he's a strategist and he is using a tool. Because, let's be honest. of all his children even then, it'd be Tyrion who'd be the most dangerous knife at his back. In more than one way.

It's such a brutal dichotomy. Tywin is his father. Tywin respects and admires Tyrion for his wit and wisdom, something very very few people in that world can lay claim to and rivals his own. He also respects and admires Tyrion's unwavering resolve to survive and thrive in a world that hates him just because he's small. And you would think that, being his father and that he admires and respects him that he thus loves and is proud of him too right? Wrong, he's utterly ashamed of him, wishes he'd never been born, and resents him for the death of his wife.
