Awesome stuff, point attacks from hell and great distance control , first class. I think it was number 5 against a tall guy with yellow mask I felt the ober /unter redouble on the right side could have been effective with height and ur speed advantage and exits

Watching Thomas Couturier fight is like watching someone win at an old fighting game by just button bashing the 'hit to the hands' button. Remember that friend nobody liked anymore after those games? ;) Beatiful fights Martin!

Mr. Fabian... Did you purchase your jacket and pants in shades of grey, or are they faded from use? Either way, I like your style!!!

It's interesting to see how a different ruleset can change the whole dynamic of the fight :) But i'm happy the French guys finally found a ruleset that suits their approach :)
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't know if I am the very best example of the idea that a ruleset changes the dynamics of a fight :) I was always a very thrust/vor oriented person and the way I fight reflects my understanding of Lichtenauer. We often discuss the philosophy behind tournaments, fighting styles etc and I really think (according to my observations) that rulesets really affect just a very low percentage of people. Most people fight consistently in their own way in every tournament and it's more dependant on their school's/countries' prevalent style. Rulesets were created after people were already fighting in some way, let's not forget that :) If the ruleset suited the French guys, we'll have to ask them.
@BlademastersAcademyHEMA
@BlademastersAcademyHEMA 7 жыл бұрын
That wasn't directed at you personally Fabian :) I know your style (and the French team), but i've noticed that due to the ruleset everyone adopted similar approach so every fighter started to act in similar way. I wouldn't agree that ruleset affect small percentage of people, but again that might be just because my approach is different so in contrast i tend to see everyone else's action as similar. The solution is simply to come to your tournament next year and try it out for myself! :) All the best! Andrzej Cork Blademasters

Thanks so much for uploading this. Weird question: what shin/knee guards are you using?

Does anyone know what make the knee and shin guards are that Martin wears? Looks slimline and lightweight and I'm trying to move away from my bulky riot gear ones!

Hi Kieran! I use street hockey guards exactly for the reasons you mentioned :) They do protect well and are very light/anatomic. So just search for "street hockey shin guards" pictures and you will find plenty to your liking ;) All the best

I'm looking at the REY Shin guards, a lot of the others are quite bulky and don't have the same knee/ankle protection. Which ones do you have? Thanks for replying by the way!

thank you for uploading. in the final, your opponent's only line of attack is one i find difficult to counter most of the time, to make matters worst he is left-handed
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 7 жыл бұрын
yes, you're right. he also had good distance management so it wasn't exactly the easiest combination. still, I should've handled it better

i wonder if the correct answer to such mid-low line to the arms lies in überlaufen
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 7 жыл бұрын
normally I use absetzen from the left side (into crossed hands to cover the line) or running in with cover and umbschlagen. depending on the opponent, uberlauffen could be a solution, but here the risk of a double was quite high

How much do HEMA tournaments tend to cost to enter? Don't know much about HEMA looking to maybe get involved soon and just curious. I love history and weaponry so. Awesome fights!
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Jamie! There are two costs - one is the entrance fee, which may be in average anything from 20-200€ depending on the tournament, location, number of categories etc. The second would be equpiment - full equipment may cost around 800-1000€ (sword, mask, mask cap, jacket, gloves, elbows, plastic protector, pants, shins, cup). Some clubs have loaners and are helping their members, so no worries :) Thank you and good luck!

Hello Gregory! Ruins what? How should I/we/someone stop? What other format is the one? Thanks!
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 5 жыл бұрын
@@gregoryrogalsky6937 Yes I see now. This is more a philosophical question. Like what kind of behaviour would you like to reward in a ruleset and in contact sport behaviour. This one likes to reward for a successful quality hit, that's why an interruption happens quite often. It's not easy to find a right balance. Two most popular rulesets nowaday reward either the first as forementioned, which creates sometimes shorter exchanges, or seek to punish it (in a way) with the afterblow. Both have their flaws, but both create beautiful fencing.

@@MartinFabian Honesty the whole Tournament thing with judges is the issue for me. For me the whole idea of sparring is to develop attributes and pressure test tech. Can I learn something from doing it and watching it is the point for me. Its' not a real fight. Never was meant to be.. I am good with that. The more the HEMA focus around points and tournaments the less I like it. For me it starts from the equipment(swords that flex so much that thrusting isn't relevant, to the armour used in sparring . Given the nature of keeping it safe to do in competion the thrust is never going to be given it's proper due with flexible swords on protective armour of the hand, arm shoulder chest leg and throat , groin, ..head .oo A lowly thrust with the point to the hand/arm will in most cases end the fight or at least make the adversary drop their sword. Let alone taking point to the shoulder or groin. Watching one of your other video where you and a fellow instructor training/sparring together is to me far more entertaining and beneficial and to the spirit of true HEMA . I enjoy your channel wish you the best of luck in the future.

@@gregoryrogalsky6937 I mean, that has nothing to do with the traditional martial art called fencing. It is just another version of Olympic fencing for athletes. These tournaments are only for entertainment;) so the rules and the points system are okay.

@@dennit1221 I study traditional fencing and know the history of sport fencing . What I am saying is that the whole idea of "points" and first touch and right of way is complete bullshit and will get you killed in a real fight with sharpened and pointed steel. I respect the time and energy that people put into learning to fence. I just think tournaments like this focus the art in the wrong direction.
