Texx Mexx Never knew that, thanks for the trip back in time. Born in 43, I was raised on BK&WT films. Tracy had box office credentials no doubt, but I can't imagine anyone for "The Man" but Edward G. Robinson, a powerhouse indeed. He is easily associated as the professional gambler, as some his previous characters are after the cash and go where the money is. McQueen had presence and plenty of it on camera, but going head-to head against E.G.R., a Hollywood legend and in reality a cultured man, was a daunting dramatic challenge. No one dominates E.G.R. on camera, it just "ain't" gonna happen no matter what cards your holding, he'll go home with the $$$,the scene and keep his crown... every time!

@EnemyAce889 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Armstrong I'm not a "pro" either, but my poker money is a nice side income that typically covers most of my household bills. In 5 card stud, one pair or just a high card is often good enough to win the pot. Full houses and straight flushes are almost impossible because you only get 5 cards and that's all. You see those big hands more often in 7 stud, hold em, or Omaha where you get 7 or 9 cards to work with, but even then it's certainly not common. I've been playing hold em at the casino about 10 hours per week for the last 12 years, and I've only had three straight flushes in my life. I have had plenty of draws to a straight flush, but it's exceptionally rare to actually catch that one card left in the deck you need to complete it. So here, the odds of one guy getting a full house and another guy getting a straight flush at the same time in 5 card stud are literally far greater than a billion to 1.
@MrMaybe19 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Armstrong Modern day pro poker players only know how to play NLH online on their pijamas !!
@ksaclo8 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Armstrong There is nothing really hear to teach or comment on because as someone already mentioned this particular game of Poker (5 card stud) isn't played much today. The scenario that they cooked up for this film is ridiculous because there isn't a poker player in the world that couldn't get caught by that. The odds are so staggering that if he made that same call another 100,000 times he would win every one of those times. It's a silly premise to even comment on this. If they wanted to make it more true to life, then it would have been two pair versus a flush. That is where trying to decipher/read someone, picking up on tells, calculating pot odds, pot management, etc. comes into play.
@ksaclo8 жыл бұрын
not sure where you got those statistics, but it actually may be even higher because most of those odds are based on games involving a total of 7 cards that each player get to use. In this case since it is 5 card stud, they even have less chances to get into that scenario.

ilovebrandnew carpets. Having played this game for over 40 years and considering they were playing with a deck consisting of 7s and up, the odds of 2 players having such hands are only in the 100s to 1. In my opinion having seen the film on its release the only glaring mistake in the script was that NO experienced player, as the Kid supposedly was, would bet a full house against a possible royal straight.
@andrewfurst57115 жыл бұрын
Think again about the ending. Is it "impossible" to have those two hands in a normal 5 card stud game, one-on-one? Pretty much. Therefore you can either assume that the director was ignorant of the odds, OR "went Hollywood" for the audience by dumbing it down, OR that we are supposed to figure out that the final game was "fixed" by a crooked dealer. I say that final choice is the one the director had in mind, though I have no way of knowing this. And if that is what he had in mind, the ending doesn't cheapen the movie at all - it explains everything. The Kid refused to cheat, but he got cheated! I'm not sure he realized it at that point though, if ever.

Notice in the part of this scene starting at 2:14 that after Edward G. Robinson's character lights his cigar and says his lines, he points the lit match at Steve McQueen's character and never once looks at the lit match as he allows it to burn down just near his fingers before extinguishing it. I first saw "The Cincinnati Kid" when I was only 10 years old. The movie was unforgetable, especially this last climactic scene. An interesting bit of trivia about this movie is that the two leading stars, Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson, their only film appearance together, each got their acting start working in Yiddish Theater in New York City. Another interesting factoid about this film, and that is clearly evident in this video clip, is that the great film editing was by Hal Ashby, one of the true Hollywood greats, who would go on to win an Oscar for editing "In the Heat of the Night." Hal Ashby would also go on to direct several films that have become cult classics, including "Harold & Maude," "The Last Detail" and "Being There."

+Flickchaser I just read that Spencer Tracy was originally cast as The Man but dropped out due to illness. If so, that was certainly a lucky break for the movie, IMHO. E.G.R. had tremendous range. In "The Sea Wolf" 1941, he played Wolf Larsen captain of the hell ship "Ghost" . Larsen, the main character, a combination brute and intellectual, was captured very well by Robinson as most everything he did was a memorable performance.

"Zoe the Cat" - true about the odds if there was no cheating. However, it's left to the viewer as to whether that was a "set up" hand (i.e. not a random dealing). Someone already had tried to help The Kid cheat and he didn't want it. Who is to say that after The Kid turned them down, that The Man didn't cheat? I say it was a cheat hand, no doubt about it - given the odds of it being real, plus the foreshadowing of the cheating possibility.

@@douglee5599 that's how poker was played back then, check another great old poker scene in "the sting". The emotional side of poker, the hand play, the looks, the chit chat, all ckeck in this movie. Especially, Edward G. Robinson nailed the role of a poker shark; 10x better than John Malkovich in rounders. McQueen and Damon played almost at the same level imo. But EGR just killed it here

Once Lancey called the $3500 and raised $5000 any pro would've known he was beat. If he was trying to buy it he would've raised much more than $5000 into that pot. In the real world, only a crooked dealer would deliver Lancey that kind of winning scenario. Both players get their dream card into that fat pot. Highly unlikely.
@andrewfurst57115 жыл бұрын
Actually you've solved the riddle of the last hand. "Only a crooked dealer" is exactly what happened, even though the film does not say this explicitly. The odds of having that final hand were ridiculously long IF no one was cheating. But the possibility of dealer cheating was already raised in the movie, therefore it is the most likely explanation of that "impossible" final hand.

An interesting movie. The ending is a little surprising; one might have expected that The Kid might have come out on top for a happy ending, but The Man surprises him. Melba (Ann-Margret) is the Devil in a dress in this, everything she touches turns sour. Christian (Tuesday Weld) is The Kid's salvation. A landmark movie from my youth.

Why are these professionals always putting their entire bankroll on the line in these movies? Don't they know basic money management and to play smaller if they only have 10k or less? Of course he's going broke if he puts his entire roll on the line when he could play smaller. He's a degen not a pro and he wouldn't have gotten close to this big for so long.

I savour the late-career performances of Edward G. Robinson--a man who practically invented modern screen acting. His utter restraint--it is like watching a master diamond cutter at work--you just keep quiet and watch. McQueen ups his game about ten notches here--his own restraint is nearly impossible to believe--and there's not a motorcycle or souped-up Mustang in sight. That one bead of sweat slowly running down his face--and he is not tempted to wipe it away: that's how internal his character's drama is. No one anywhere is making movies like this. More's the pity...

@andrewfurst57115 жыл бұрын
You need to see the entire movie. They aren't mad at The Kid for betting big on a full house, they are mad at him for not cheating, which they wanted him to do. The Kid found out they were giving him good cards from a fixed deck, and he told them to play it straight and had them change dealers. So they were mad at him that he "had to do it his way" (i.e. not cheat). Ironically, the ridiculous odds of the final hand show that someone almost certainly then cheated on behalf of The Man. When you understand the "cheating" angle, you understand why that "impossible" last hand wasn't so impossible.
