Tyrone Power & Lana Turner's Love Affair "The Man That Got Away"

A look at the love affair of film legends, superstars Tyrone Power and Lana Turner's short lived love affair in the late 1940s. At the height of both of their legendary beauty,, they were considered one of Hollywood's all time most gorgeous couples, both possessing strong sexual appetites which doomed their romance, since they were incapable of being faithful. When Power found out about Turner;s liasion with another man in New York, he decided to end the relationship with Lana, who was pregnant and brokenhearted, and considered Tyrone the love of her life, and the one who broke her heart(according to her autobiography). Ironcially, Tyrone then married starlet Linda Christian, who played Lana's maid in the 1947 blockbuster Green Dolphin Street. Judy Garland,who sings The Man that Got Away on the soundtrack was also deeply in love with Tyrone, who also left her pregnant and broken hearted in 1942. There are some shots of Lana and Judy, and also Lana and Tyrone with best friends, respectfully, Ava Gardner and Caeser Romero.

I think even, both were 8 times, though Liz married Burton twice, so she may only count as 7. Lana was described by one writer as "a woman who collected men the way other women collected diamonds."Some of her many lovers were Tony Martin, Fernando Lamas,Mickey Rooney, John F. Kennedy, Howard Hughes, Sean Connery, Victor Mature, Robert Taylor, Clark Gable and Frank Sinatra(and according to some Mrs. Sinatra, Ava Gardner). The best book I have ever read about Lana was The Private Diary of My Life with Lana by Eric Root, her, of course, gay companion during the latter years of her Life. You will get a kick out of Lana admitting she was not aware of what fellatio was during the 1940s, astonishing since she was Hollywood's most promiscuous star. And, of course, she confesses to Root that she killed Johnny Stomponato, something that even the most intense Lana fans now recognize as the truth. There was justification for it since Lana killed him in self defense. It was a little bit of a bummer that Lana's gay daughter, Cheryl took the rap for the murder, but she served a very short time in a luxury school for wayward girls.

She was classy and elegant. They spent 7 years together and had two beautiful girls. In the contrary Lana was also beautiful, but she didn't have all the expectations that Tyron was looking for. Ty had to be bi. Lana, I think, truly loved him, but their studios, Fox and MGM, did not approve of them as a couple. Ty desperately wanted a son, and Lana, for several reasons, might not have been the best candidate for motherhood at that point. Linda Christian...fast worker, and gave him two daughters. Debbie Lowe, his third and final wife, gave him the son he wanted, born after he died on a film set, in 1959. ironic that two male film icons, Gable and Power, both had sons, finally, but did not live to see them born.

Ironically, considering Tyrone's bisexuality, Robert Wagner's first marriage to Natalie ended in divorce in 1962 when she found him in bed with another man. Natalie was so distraught by it , she attempted to take her Life. Tyrone also had an affair in 1942-43 with the beautiful voice singing this great song Judy Garland. The affair resulted in a pregnancy which MGM studio put a stop to because Tyrone was married and Judy was a huge box office draw. I have read several articles that said they were very much in love with each other. Tyrone Power went off to war in 1943 and continued to pine for Judy telling a good friend she continued to fill his dreams. The good friend also said when Ty saw the film "Meet Me In St Louis" in vivid technicolor, while serving overseas in WWIl, he was reminded of what he had lost, saying "My God she never looked so beautiful." I don't really blame these women. How in the world could they resist the most beautiful man I have ever seen anywhere, anytime period. Frankly I'm more interested in the 2 people shown in the first photo with Tyrone Power.Eve Wynn & Van Johnson. She would divorce Keenan Wynn and marry Van Johnson in 1947 the day after the divorce was final. Van left her in 1961 and in her son Ned Wynn's book he states Van left his mother for a man.After Van died at age 92 his ex-wife also said he was homosexual and their marriage was arranged by the studio to cover it up. There are stories about Tyrone's bisexuality. Best friend Caesar Romero was said to be one of his male lovers.

Ty Power was heavily bi-sexual, preferring both women and men, with an emphasis on the latter. Although he had a "hot and heavy" with Turner, alas, her many dramas drove him away, and he had a lot of shoulders in Hollywood to cry on. Tyrone Power, was one handsome man! I had a friend in grade school; whose mother had brother's that looked like him! They looked like movie stars! But, they never thought they were handsome! I remember her mother telling me they were called the "Black Irishman", because of their cold black hair and beautiful eyes! There may had been a Spanish mix with Irish! I wish that I knew to ask! I'm from the UK and Tyrone is an Irish name. I've known a few Tyrones and they are all white. Ireland even has a "County Tyrone". Power was of Irish extraction.
