It's not Nationality, it's "Народность". Russia was never big on nationalism, but it always had focused on "Народность". It's very hard to explain and even translate. I don't believe English can express the idea/thought behind it, but you can try to think about it as "peopleness". Tsardom, Druzhina, Boyars, Strelci, the architecture., vast frozen land, spring mud (Rasputitsa)...the inspiration with Russia is very strong. But there seems to be also some inspiration with Poland like e.g. the Winged Lancers aka Winged Hussars.

The old version of Kislev was essentially the early Muscovite Tsardom but with the army being inspired by Poland-Lithuania with Winged Lancers and Horse Archers based on Lithuanian Tartars. Infantry came in the shape of Kossars who were inspired by Zaporozhian Cossacks. But Games Workshop added plenty of fantasy details and also did some visual changes. For example Wings Lancer tabletop models only kept the wong and lance of the Polish-Lithuanian Hussars, the armour was mainly based on Russian styles.

Some of this is so incredibly original, and then there's just copy-paste Muscovy lore right after it

Kislev is to me the most superior Human nation in the Warhammer fantasy universe in my opinion. I think it puts Britonnia and the Empire of Sigmar to shame. It's only rival in my opinion is Grand Cathay.

Beginner question: Do Warhammer Fantasy & 40K take place in the same “universe”? Like just at different points of time in history?
@the_corvid972 жыл бұрын
Nope, closest connection they have is within the same multiverse. Warhammer 40k takes place 40,000 years into our own future whilst Warhammer Fantasy's world is it's own planet. There used to be a theory that Fantasy took place on a lost colony world on the 40k universe but now it's no longer the case. Now they're only connected by the Warp.

They used to. Orks, the Old Ones, and the Chaos Gods work more or less the same way in both universes, and at one point, Chaos armies had the option to include a summoned Chaos Space Marine as a specialist. Older 40K space maps had the Warhammer Fantasy planet classified as a Feral World deep within the Eye of Terror, and certain tales among Chaotic forces spoke of a powerful red-skinned sorcerer with one eye, which has a lot of parallels to Magnus the Red, Primarch of the Thousand Sons Legion of Space Marines. That said, Games Workshop has officially said the two are separate continuities.

@@the_corvid97 Interesting! Thank you. Just getting in Warhammer and there’s a lot to take in haha

@@tba113 I was always partial to the old fan myth that the entirety of 40k’s universe existed within a crystal ball in some wizard’s tower in Altdorf. Kind of explains why the Chaos gods have a much easier time taking over entire systems in 40k, whereas in fantasy they can’t even take this one world (and no, End Times doesn’t count). Them being separate is probably the best move, though.
