NGI is heavily involved in securing the old, sunken submarine from WWII. The Norwegian Coastal Administration produced this animation to show the enormous project on the seabed off the coast of Norway.

So what has happened to this wreck? The most recent news I can find dates to 2019 where supposedly Norway was planning to entomb the submarine under rubble and sand by 2020, but then no additional news or information about whether this was ever done or not.

Just read an article from 2022 that norways environmental groups want the entire ship and Mercury lifted out of the ocean instead of this plan. But I can’t find anything else

Norway sure has some very serious problems with sunken subs. The U-864, carrying what amounts to be an environmental time bomb with 67 tons of weapons grade Mercury. And also the Soviet nuclear sub K-278, which sank in 1989. When the Norwegians explored the wreck in 2019, they discovered that the sub was leaking radiation.

@deanladue3151
@deanladue3151 Жыл бұрын
It was used in the triggering mechanisms for bombs, torpedoes. And analog readouts on airplanes. But the sub was also carrying blueprints and technical specs for the ME-262 fighter jet, it was probably also be used towards construction of that aircraft.

To do or not to do, that is the question...the age old question. You Do! because you can and when you cannot you wait until you can. If it can be done than do it. Who should pay? We all pay now or pay later and a shared burden is a lighter burden!

The Norwegian state budget puts up 30 millions NOK to preparing for covering of U-864. (Ca. 3 millions EUROS). Not unexpected, this is a part of a governmental instruction of the Norwegian Coastal Administration since 2008. In 2010, the Jens Stoltenberg government decided to draw off 620 Million NOK from the salvaging budget for U-864. It was totally 740 millions. Then the government decided to use 10 millions on papers, and 100 millions for preparing covering of the wreck. Later they raised the budget with 150 millions to make a supportive sand filling to "secure" the wreck. That was step one in the covering. In 2010 the government decided to ERASE THE SALVAGING OPTION, and prevent the Parliament from having the option of voting for salvage. Tha last step in the cover operation is to ERASE THE SALVAGE OF MERCURY, and then only go for covering. It will be the biggest deposit of Mercury on the planet, and on the sea bed, stored in salt water, the environment that is the best for developing Methylmercury, a vey dangerous nerve poison. And on top of that: Norway never reported the Mercury threat to OSPAR, the commision that are working for protecting and cleaning the marine environment in The North Sea. The Norwegian Right wing government, lead by Prime Minister Erna Solberg, have the aim to be a leading star for cleaning the oceans for plastic bags...WHAT ABOUT 67 TONNES OF MERCURY? It's time to act - the best way for health and environment for thousands of years ahead. It seams that Prime Minister Erna Solberg is more occupied with planning her golden pension...

(Tipo New York Times, Reuters etc). Metade das matéria não leva a informação de quem escreveu, simplesmente colocam que foi a redação. Isso já é sinal de que ou foi um estagiário qualquer que fez a matéria, ou o jornalista não quer assinar a matéria com o nome.

Wouldn’t there be a cheaper way to do this ? Maybe they could build the dam out of fabric and rubber material closer to the wreck instead . Once it is on the ship it could still leak overboard if it’s flat topped.

3 years ago and this pops up currently for me in youtube...I really do hope since then we've gone and taken an environmental survey of every sunken warship, commercial vessel, private ship/boat currently laying at the bottom of the ocean to properly assess the need to bury all these lost vessels in 7 meters of sand and gravel. Even if we go broke doing it because everything is at stake as each could be a cesspool of chemical concerns leaching into our oceans. Gravel may not be enough. We should encase all wrecks in concrete and establish 1000 mile geofence exclusion zones around each wreck.

DeutschwehR a more appropriate counter would have been say making the Brits pay for raising the Bismarck since well a sunken vessel and bombs that failed to detonate the first time are two completely different stories. Also then the Brits can dumb all their unexplored German ordnance on Berlin if we follow that train of logic we will eventually end up having the Japanese raise the Arizona and the Brits the Graf Spee. Along with an entire warehouse of problems from history.
