Love that 9/4 section on Rendezvous. I bought my Yamaha CS-80 in 1980 after seeing this tour . We covered most of these songs but could hardly make a go of it without making $. Specialized audience for sure. Carrying a B3, CP-70, CS-80, Mini Moog, D6-Clavinet, Rhodes… to limited audiences? The smaller markets wanted pop so goes the industry.

I own a virtual CS-80 plugin by Memory Moon er sumthin’ like that and it does a great job. As far as pop goes - it has destroyed many a great band’s hopes to “make it”.

@@titanium9000Can be 10/4, or 5/4 or 10/8 or 5/8. I “feel” it as 3/8+3/8+4/8 at certain times throughout the section (piano solo phrasing). There are many ways to notate piece like Rendezvous. For example intro can be notated as 7/16 or 14/16 combining two segments into one bar. Entire “vocal” section is in 4/4, but it works well as 16/16 especially for drumming (Terry “thinks” 16s throughout).

You said “I started listening to it when I was 16 and now I enjoy it as a young man, great group UK”. And I agree. I was 2 years out of college working my first real job when I discovered U.K. with Holdsworth, Bruford, Jobson and Wetton. Amazing music! Even though I heard Holdsworth with Jean Luc Ponty, his guitar styling was only curious to me. But hearing him with U.K. and then Bruford made me stand up and take notice.

@batphink2655 If you read other recent comments, this issue seems to be answered that Wetton set his booming bass aside and played 🎸 guitar parts for a bit. He is (was) a multi-instrumentalist. Also, the famous taper, never mentioned anyone guesting. In my search for records concerning this gig, a guitarist is never mentioned.

And one more thing about Nostalgia. You can cleary hear the guitar there. It may also have been pre-recorded. I have to ask the creator because I'm curios
@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic
@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic 6 ай бұрын
I have two theories concerning the obvious electric guitar sound on “Nostalgia”. 1) John Wetton not only was known to play bass and sing (but like Greg Lake of ELP who played bass, guitar and sang), he also could play guitar and keyboards but rarely. If you listen closely to the song in question, Wetton’s signature booming, effects laden bass is NOT present. I surmise that Jobson who wrote the piece may have asked Wetton to add the very simple flowing guitar lines. Keyboards and violins were clearly evident. Seeing as Holdsworth and Bruford had left and everywhere you research this rare recording, only Jobson, Wetton and Bozzio are listed as being on stage. 2) Effects pedals can emulate an acoustic guitar via an electric guitar. Acoustic can be made to sound like an electric guitar. So, a bass could be octaved up to sound like an electric guitar. But I seriously doubt Wetton did this unless he used a 6-string bass. He typically did not play anything but a 4-string. A guitar recorded by some unknown person and then replayed for use in the song is highly unlikely as U.K. was never known to have done such ever before or after this concert. See what I mean? These are my best explanations after listening to the sone just now.😎👍🎼🎹🎸🥁

@zbiarski1963 6 ай бұрын
@@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic Thank You for reply. Most likely, it is Wetton who plays the guitar here and it sounds like a Stratocaster live. Because he was also a guitarist (I looked it up on Wikipedia) and I didn't know it. Especially since there is no bass here.

How did they cover Holdsworth parts?
@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic
@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic Жыл бұрын
In later years Akex Machacek did guitar parts. But at this time there was no guitarist! U.K. was reduced to a power trio after both Holdsworth & Bruford had left with Bozzio being a new member of the band. Jobson might have been able to use the violin or synthesizer to "ape" Holdsworth but he never did such. It would have been impossible. With a different tale to be told -- when I saw The Steve Morse Band live, Morse was able to emulate keyboard lines as well as violin parts on his guitar when his new band played old Dregs songs. Now that was amazing to see and hear.

@@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic I just watched a Q&A session from one of UK's reunion shows from one of the CTTE cruises. John and Eddie said that it was "understood" that Bruford and Holdsworth would leave the band after the first album so that they could pursue more of a jazz fusion career path where Eddie and John wanted to return to their Prog Rock roots. Eddie asked Terry Bozzio to join UK from their shared history in Frank Zappa's band. On the guitar front, they asked a young unheard of Eric Johnson if he would be interested in the gig which he declined. I think they were also thinking about asking Gary Moore as well but alas the guitar role was never filled and the rest is history.

@@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusicYes and I think there are some recordings of him playing on "The Only Thing She Needs" Probably my favorite UK song ever. I actually first heard the song performed by a band in the New York area in the late '70s called Rat Race Choir. I also though it was an original of theirs as I had never heard the song before or of UK. Anyway, they had a guitar player playing on the song. I just thought that was the way it went until I finally heard the original off of the "Danger Money" album when I noticed there was no guitar! You said: "Uk disappeared for me when bozzio left." I say U.K. basically started sinking fast as soon as Bruford and Holdsworth left! I did buy Danger Money and Night After Night with the trio ensemble but it just wasn't the original powerhouse of incredible talent. At least Bill formed BRUFORD and it was even better than U.K.!!
@musicprofessor1
@musicprofessor1 Ай бұрын
Jobson disbanded UK at the end of 1979, so the band "disappeared" for all of us. It had nothing to do with Bozzio. And I don't agree with JazzRock guy that U.K. started sinking after Bruford; the Danger Money album propelled them to arena level and away of the sinking jazz-fusion scene. Only if you're into guitar jazz do you think that Bruford was better than U.K.; what you are missing is that the best music (compositionally) on "U.K." "Danger Money" and "One of a Kind" was all written or co-written by Jobson.

@musicprofessor1 Thanks for your opinion. U.K. just was never the same after Holdsworth and Bruford left. THAT was THE supergroup. Being a guitarist I if course, was blown away by the first incarnation. Being a synthesizer player www.SourceCodeX.com I still like the trio with Jobson as well. But arena rock status means nothing to me. I am all about virtuoso playing and engaging compositions, leaning more towards JazzRock.😎👍🎼🎸
