One of my childhood fantasy ideas becoming real. Still waiting on an air superiority fighter to come with even just two small, short range missles or a small caliber machine gun carried and positioned so as to engage targets behind the aircraft if they ever get into a dogfight just as way of covering every potential scenario. Would let you reverse roles in a dogfight as it could be used just to keep the enemy from being able to get his nose on you for a gun kill/missle lock. Missles would obviously be better just take them out or if they were radar guided missles at the very least the lock on would force them to give up their advantageous position.

"F-35 DAS and APG-81 radar demonstrate ability to detect, track, target ballistic missiles Northrop Grumman Corporation recently demonstrated the ballistic missile detection, tracking and targeting capabilities of the company's AN/AAQ-37 distributed aperture system (DAS) and AN/APG-81 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, both of which are featured on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft. Northrop Grumman's DAS and APG-81 autonomously detected, tracked and targeted multiple, simultaneous ballistic rockets. The DAS autonomously detected all five rockets, launched in rapid succession, and tracked them from initial launch well past the second stage burnout."

The iris t is larger but already does this
@ThatCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
The Iris T also uses a warhead and would be much slower and less maneuverable despite being slower. That's why they aren't comparable. The Miniature Self-Defense Missile being smaller and lighter would also be able to take faster/sharper turns and would have a longer range since it lacks a warhead and can be filled with more fuel since it uses kinetic energy. It's downside would be, the Iris doesn't have to pin point hit another missile and can use it's H/E warhead to fragment and hopefully get the target even if its say 100 feet off. Both have their pros and cons, but this new little missile will be a huge improvement over the Iris(if it's accurate, so will have to wait and see) since drones would be able to carry these since they would be light enough.

The IRIS-T and R-77 both are capable of taking out other missiles but you forget the key point, you using up your missiles stock in the process. Unless you are carrying 12 plus missile, that capability is a double edged sword. Miniature Self-Defense Missile ultimately is great concept for protection for bombers, tankers, AWACS and other large aircraft The Chinese PL-15 and Russia R-37 goal is knocking out US military assets like bombers, tankers, AWACS and other large aircraft. Miniature Self-Defense Missile would be a bane to those missile but the question is can the US get it to work ?

I'm not forgetting anything.. just correcting the vid as this capacity has been available for decades now.... As for these mini missiles.. That is called a dazzler, the US already has dazzlers. ODIN is the newest most advanced one off the top of my head. "The U.S. Navy expects to have eight warships, in total, equipped with the Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy, or ODIN, a laser directed energy weapon system, within the next three years. One Arleigh Burke class destroyer, the USS Dewey, is already equipped with ODIN, which The War Zone was first to report on last year."
@sagardahiya61383 жыл бұрын
@@ThatCarGuy yeah but bringing them to fighter jets is what the challenge
@ThatCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@sagardahiya6138 You wont see lasers on any nations fighters for a long time, even laser dazzlers which are much weaker then actual lasers. Fighters don't produce enough power(MW). Even the Nimitz class carriers don't produce enough power(source below). The SU57 uses an IR dazzler, not a laser. It uses infrared beams to try to blind missiles using IR tracking(not GPS, INS,etc) and only works on IR missiles. A laser dazzler would blind all forms of navigation by blinding the seeker. "That means Ford, with survivability questions looming over aircraft carriers, can support large, power-sucking equipment such as lasers, according to Capt. J.J. Cummings, the Ford’ commanding officer. “When you talk about innovation in the Navy, this is where it lives,” Cummings said, referring to his ship. “We’re lighter - designed lighter - than Nimitz class. “Nimitz class, she’s barreling down pretty good now with a lot of stuff on her, and her electric plant is almost at maximum capacity. We’re light and designed to have excess capacity in our electrical system to bring future systems on board.”

@@ThatCarGuy yeah but the weapon of choice being pitched up against stealth jets are newer gen heat seeking missile guided with data from IRST sensors. Could probably help in some situations. F35 already have better stealth then su 57, addition won't hurt.
@ThatCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@sagardahiya6138 By all means it could help, but all missiles use more then just IR guidance, so unless you can actually take out the seeker it will just switch to INS,GPS,etc. So the cost might not be worth it since it can't do anything else since one of the F35s main selling points is how cheap they are. Once we find a way to get "mini reactors" think Iron Man more or less, on planes they will be able to power lasers, but that wont be for awhile. Ships are just getting them and they are 500+ feet long.
