The ship will take well over a mile to slow down enough to turn around from the time they realise someone is overboard, by the time they get back to where they think the person was and send a small boat out to look would be quite a while. You would have to be able to tread water for at least half an hour to a few hours to have a chance of being rescued. People who have been drinking generally pass out the moment they hit the water from the cold water, even from a short fall it is common to pass out

I always wondered the same thing … until it almost happened to me. I am an adult woman and weigh 140 lbs, so not a light weight for sure. I don’t drink alcohol so that was not an issue. I was climbing up a set of stairs nearer to the top deck. I had my hand on the rail but a huge gust of wind almost took me over. I will never forget it! I had the sense (or instinct/reaction or whatever) to drop down on my knees which I think, provided protection from the wind. I was pretty freaked out afterwards 😬
