I live in Scotland. Back in 2001, there was a mother who threw her two children off a cliff and then threw herself over. All 3 died on impact. The youngest was found still strapped into his pushchair. I drive by where it happened quite often because it's not a cliff you can miss. I was only 8 in 2001, but it's burned into my memory forever. After an investigation, the mother was suffering from post natal depression, and they couldn't decide whether it was post natal depression or post natal psychosis. When I had my own child, I developed severe and crippling post natal depression. The thoughts, the feelings, the loneliness....the dark. I'll never forget how it made me feel. I went to my GP and thankfully got help, and I feel very fortunate because I was able to receive help....not everyone does 😪 Edit because I also remember a woman who threw her baby out a window. Thankfully, the baby was able to survive. Being sleep deprived can make you hallucinate (talking from experience) The mother called her doctor, plus the hospital so many times and every time, she was brushed off.

How we have the resources and assuming she had an OBGYN, primary care physician, even a hospital near by that’s something you discuss with a professional. In my OBGYN office there are posters and phone numbers in every room to get help with postpartum depression. I’m just confused on how society is failing like society can predict a struggle without the person voicing it? We have the resources. Woman with PPD need to acknowledge it and seek help immediately, can’t just expect help to fall into your lap or expect everyone to notice your struggles. If she had the ability to walk or drive to Niagara Falls she had the ability to seek help. Now do I think more education to parents about PPD and its symptoms need to be discussed? Yes.

Very sad, condolences to the family. The Niagara search and rescue will be down river searching the pools from both the US and Canadian sides - they are long time honoured groups who work together. Niagara’s eight-person USRU, NFFD rescue team, NY State Park Police eleven-person Swift Water Rescue Team, Maid of the Mist Captains & crews. I was at the falls one year when someone fell in - lots has changed since then as far as guard rails and how close people can get. Still, people climb the rails to take pictures and do stupid things and fall in. I don't live too far from there and go there often since the 1960's. It can take up to 10 days to recover a body in that River due to undertow and they usually surface near a whirlpool. Deep respect to everyone searching. That water is cold, swift and the bottom is slippery. 🙏

I work as a tour guide there and the respect I have for the Swift Water Rescue Teams is immense. People underestimate the power of these rapids and whirlpools and to know it’s appx. 160 ft. deep in the gorge- a lot of places for a body to get caught under. Seems like a case of untreated postpartum depression that lead to a state of psychosis considering she had a 5 month old meaning she didn’t give birth too long ago. Usually in the mind of someone depressed especially getting to this point you convince yourself you’re doing something good for society in some way shape or form. I’ve been there before and now that I’m back in reality after having some helpful friends I pray I don’t go back there again. It’s a very deceptive state of mind that the average human couldn’t comprehend and I wouldn’t want anyone not even my worst enemy to go through it. I was counting days before I was graced with love that pulled me back into the real world. The world is not the same in that state of mind, it’s like an alternate reality and you convince yourself everyone hates you or you did something wrong. If you see someone struggling give them a hug. Of course there's video evidence of the tragedy, as well and eyewitness accounts. They say the 9 year old jumped first, the baby went second, then the mom. A 5 month old wouldn't be able to make the jump on her own, so it's reasonable to assume the mother threw her in. The mother did not hold the baby in one arm and hold the boy's hand with the other and jump simultaneously. She had to make sure they went in first.

Please do not judge. You cannot understand if you have not been there. Depression is an ILLNESS which can cause obsessive thoughts which are hard to control. With the age of the youngest child, this was likely postpartum depression, which can become very severe. Not only does the mother have thoughts of suicide, but also thoughts to take her children with her. It’s the deepest, darkest abyss which most people simply do not know anything about.

We went through a dunkin doughnuts and the young lady working was very pretty i said " hello pretty girl" with tears in her eyes she said" thank you i really needed that".
