Okay, for a bit of context there, most military pepper sprays have about 10% pure capsaicin. It's not just very hot, it is in fact so poweful it literally disrupts your brain, making you unable to think, speak or move normally. It's very impressive But, when we learned to use it to neutralize somebody, we also learned that no matter how much we sprayed, we should always keep our weapons at hand because there is in fact a non negligeable percentage of population who is purely and simply immuned to it, about 3% if I recall

That's the huge issue with nonlethal methods. It's very very hard to make effective ones. Spray and tasers are about as good as we've got, and frankly they just aren't reliable enough to fully replace lethal options by any measure. Even before we get into the range issues. Maybe one day we'll have the option to "set the phasers to stun" or some crap, but right now all nonlethal options are very hard to balance effect/risk.

When I was in the Marines (50 yrs ago), they made us go into a quonset hut filled with tear gas. We also had to jump into a pool with about 50 lbs of gear on (including boots) and stay afloat in deep water for 15 min. All our food had cockroaches in it and we had limited time to eat it. We had to stand in "dress right dress" position (one arm extended out) in full sun until people started passing out. Lots of running and marching in formation until exhaustion. Lots of abusive screaming in your face. Surprise inspections at any hour. Extra duties (like scrubbing toilets with your toothbrush) given out, forcing you to miss meals. I never really understood the point of all this bad treatment and I hope they aren't doing it anymore.

I've actually done this. So when I did the training I did it was another guy. It was in the evening, the sun was down and when I got sprayed, because I didn't react the trainer who sprayed me thought he wasn't hitting me so I got an extra long shot of it. The other guy who also took the shot was standing next to me. There was a water bucket 10ft away for us to get ourselves to so we could rinse. When the other guy got sprayed. He instantly managed to projectile vomit into the eye water bucket. Everyone watching were so amazed he managed to vomit a 10ft arc into the bucket no one was quick enough to stop ne from rinsing off in the puke bucket. The worst part. I had pepper spray under my fingernails and when I woke up the next day and rubbed my eyes I basically pepper sprayed myself again
