This is ridiculous. Over inflated ego’s. They should refuse to pay them and pick people who actually want to play in a traditional Ryder Cup. Mcilroy summed it up perfectly. One of the best weeks in the golf calendar, theres another 103 weeks that these guys can get paid.
@Tom_Swift12 күн бұрын
So the media, tours, broadcasters, etc. make millions off the event featuring the players, aka the talent, aka the reason why everyone is watching, and they get zero dollars??? It's not really about ego at all, unless every single penny of profit from the event is donated then someone is making profit, so the players unquestionably deserve to be paid. No players = No Ryder Cup.
@Tom_Swift12 күн бұрын
So many hands are making BIG MONEY off of the Ryder Cup. Unless all profits are donated, then the players deserve to get paid as well. Ask all the media personalities, broadcasters, event staff, production, etc. if they would work this event for free...
@mikejamieson95399 күн бұрын
Exactly they’re gonna make a few hundred million off the backs of the players the earnings should be donated or half to the players.
@bob536513 күн бұрын
This is one of 2 events that should stay unpaid. Let's face it, none of these guys need to be paid for the Ryder Cup or the Olympics. It may also bring in a little favoritism when it comes time for selection. The cost of tickets, food, parking, etc is out of control. I would love to be able to go for even 1 day, but like most average people, I'm priced out. They claim to want to expand the game of golf, yet everything they do goes against that claim.
@Tom_Swift12 күн бұрын
Unless every single penny of profit from the event is donated then lots of people are making profit here, the players rightfully deserve to be paid. You can blame the corporate greed for the high ticket cost, merch, etc.

Don't care that the players are paid but I do have an issue with that cost being passed down to consumers. Just another case of corporate greed. You can't tell me they could not pay them with the billions of dollars this event generates. Just Golf being Golf = A rich/wealthy person's game!
@nomorenonsense12 күн бұрын
I have no problem with the players getting paid. After all its the players who make the event and it is their job. The problem is with the corporate greed. PGA of America will make 100s of million from this event. They could literally let everyone in for free just from the profit from merchandise. Just look how much Augusta sells each year in merchandise. Then profiting off of volunteers aswell is comical. This isn't an issue at all about player pay. It's those greedy executives all taking 25 million dollar bonuses. This is the exact reason why Greg Norman started LIV. Notice how millions showed up in weekly purses on the pga as soon as guys started to leave. The players should actually get profit share from this event and stick it to the PGA of America. This is by no means a charity event and the tour groups are screwing everyone involved including the players, fans and volunteers. Enjoy the $22 dollar beers aswell.

PGA of America: we’re going to charge $750+/day for tickets to the Ryder Cup; also PGA of America: players should be proud to play on the Ryder Cup team. They don’t need to get paid. Players are greedy. PGA of America: we need unpaid volunteers. We can’t do this without volunteers; also PGA of America: volunteers, you need to pay us $350 to volunteer. Who’s the greedy one? Who’s out of touch? Who’s gouging the fans? Who’s taking advantage of unpaid volunteers? Who’s making hundreds of millions of dollars running this event using the talent of professional golfers and efforts of unpaid volunteers and expect them to do it for free? Or CHARGE THEM FOR THE “PRIVILEGE”? Maybe I’ll watch it on TV. But TV coverage of PGA Tour events is horrible. Why would I expect coverage of the RC to be any different, any better? I’ll be out on the golf course, enjoying a round of golf with my friends, spending maybe $100-150 tops for a round plus food and drink afterwards. Maybe I’ll record the matches, and watch them without commercials, and fast forward past the inane commentary. Maybe … we can ask the age old question “if the Ryder Cup is on TV and no one watches, will anyone care?” The PGA of America is about to find out.

@CTaylor30713 күн бұрын
I did the math last night even if they paid all 24 players that's around 10 million. With just ticket sales it's looking to bring in over $350 million even after paying the players. Not including TV deal, sponsorship, concession, merch, and other revenue. I know they claim that proceeds go to charity but where is the proof that the half they are supposed to makes it there? Not to mention most of the "charities" that receive are run by the same group who put it on to begin with. A lot of time you see these charities paying their higher ups millions a year. The other half is at the discretion of the players. It would be awesome for the players who take the money to directly donate it. From the research I've done they are claiming under $50 million has been donated to United states charities since 1999. With ticket prices being around double this year that still puts the money being brought in above $150 million at Whilstling straights and Marco. Now it is expensive to put these on so figure it at 1/3 which would be 50 million the last 2 events that's still $200 million that where did it go? So just deductive reasoning says that the 12 Ryder cups since 1999 have brought in over $1.1 billion in sales and likely around 600 million in proceeds. This is also not to mention the rumors of the PGA of America selling tickets directly to secondary ticket suppliers. If the Ryder cup wasn't about money then why increase prices on tickets to begin with? I for one have no reason to pay more to go watch in person then it would be to get memberships to 4 courses for the year around me (That would be total cost for 2 people for the weekend).

I am old enough to have lived when professionals were finally allowed to compete in amateur events - particularly tennis. The "Tennis Boom" resulted as the competition level went through the roof. Expecting people who make their living playing a sport to do so for free is naive. Claiming they should play for free because they are patriots is not just naive but disingenuous. The PGA is getting paid, so why should the competitors be expected to compete for free? Yes, volunteers are involved in golf tournaments, but they are self-selected. I have volunteered for a US Open, and I was willing to pay to do so. If I had wanted to attend as a spectator, I would have had to pay more. I have heard zero discussions about paying the players at different rates based on performance. I favor this because whether the players are paid or not, MONEY IS BEING MADE!! Demanding that competitors play for free does not mean someone is not getting paid because they are; it is just that the reason for watching - the players - is getting hosed. By that logic, USGA or PGA officials should be unpaid. It is the same for college sports - and now they are getting paid as well.
@amp424013 күн бұрын
These are all valid points. I can see the players thinking hell, everyone's making money but us and we're the product. Typical shit PR move by the PGA. Instead of going into their mass coffers they just pass the cost - of an expense of their own creation, mind you - on to the consumer.

There is a great article written in Sports Illustrated that lays out where the funds have been going: 1/ the players currently get $200,000 each to donate to the charity of their choice. 2/ the PGA Tour (not the PGA of America) also gets 20% of the TV revenue, last count at $88 million. 3/ These funds are reported to be spread across the PGA Tour retirement fund for example, benefitting all. for years. 4/ the PGA of America chapters all get funding from Ryder Cup revenue each year. 5/ the American team players already are staring at 7 digit bank accounts..... 6/ so $400,000 per American player as reported times 12 players = roughly $5,000,000. 7/ do you think thats going to come from the PGA Tour bucket??? by contract, as noted above, they are getting 20% already. 8/ does this mean then that the local PGA club pro, teaching pro, etc is going to be lighter in the pocket???

After a slight resurgence in the sport after COVID I can see a sharp decline happening soon down to greed, from players to equipment manufacturers and now the events themselves totally overpriced, KZbin golfers like yourself, Rick, James, Peter, and many more could use this and arrange some affordable events that I'm sure us regular guys/girls would flock to see, so come make it happen and get the greedy pro's worried, keep them coming mate.

I have always assumed that players travel, board and room and incidental expenses were paid. If they are getting paid $400,000 each, will they now arrange their own airfare, taxi, motels and meals, plus golf related expenses? If they were paying all of these costs out of their pocket before, then getting paid makes more sense. In short, it should be an honor to play, but a break even cost wise. The Masters, Pebble Beach and Ryder Cup were my favorite tournaments to watch. This is not a good change for the Ryder Cup. It detracts from its value as a tournament. It may still be good, but it is now different.

Nobody should be paid to play in a Ryder Cup. Rory said it perfectly. There are 103 weeks between Ryder Cups where you earn money. Playing for your country for one week every other year is an honour and if you cant sacrifice one week of your time to represent your country then you don’t deserve to be there. Those top tier players are earning in the region of £10m a year and much more through sponsorship. If you’re complaining about money you’re not in it for the right reasons and shouldn’t be on the team.

A key component Mr short game left out is that the players are getting paid immediately after they asked for transparency of how the pga are using the incredible fortune this event generates. Their answer: here take some money. Players should keep asking for transparency. Why are we always questioning the players about money while giving a pass to the suits gobbling up all this money? …especially now as these are the same people who created this asinine, Greedy 750$ tix. I legit was hoping to take my family of five to this Ryder cup. That’s not going to happen for obvious reasons. They blame the second hand sellers raising prices but there are clearly ways to get real fans buying tix. For example make fans line up somewhere to buy tickets. Limit the number one person can buy. There are lot of ways to sell tickets. They don’t have to let the sharks use technological advantages to hoard all the tickets. I’m very disappointed in the pga of America. Of course now they have loud mouth Brandie already brainwashing folks that players are greedy to distract people from the greed at the top. You should not fall for this Mr shirt game. We btw just paid the pga of America over 500$ for a jr league that runs nov to January…once every couple of weeks I believe. The Ryder cup, the way it’s going, needs to pay the players. The Olympics are the Olympics every 4 years, and btw athletes are getting paid more and more there as well. The days of ‘you cannot take any money from anywhere while we get rich’ are dying. And that is a good thing. It’s a good thing for athletes to get paid. That way they can continue to do what they do. I don’t think it opens up any cans to simply pay people. It’s just the right thing to do. Especially if the customer is being price gouged.

A classic divide and conquer tactics applied ong the PGA/LIV conflict would put the players in the driving seat of golf for decades. Sadly it seems the players are to gready to understand this once in a lifetime opportunity to shape the future of golf.
