In Baumholder the courtesy patrols from the Post would try to snatch up as many of us who were drunk and load us in the drunk bus for a ride back to our units before the polizei came in swinging their batons and cracking heads of all those GIs claiming their rights!!! Hauled away to a German jail for days to a week at time then finally they get back to their units and 14 days and loss of pay!!! As I was one of the only guys who could speak German I'd sing drinking songs with them and when the polizei came in they would grab me a show me the secret back stairway out of there! It helped to be able to communicate with the locals, it was the 80s so everybody looked like a punk rocker! Lol. Sadly as we were always on alert I only had a couple of passes to see much of the rest of Germany. I was an acting E5 at the time but my older sister and her husband were both Captains. She was seventh corps food officer and he was a west pointer Ranger. They took me for short trips. Always wanted to go back to Europe as a tourist but 30 years of marriage, a daughter and three grand daughters took a lot of time. My wife passed away some years ago and now I'm disabled but I would still like to see the sights one day

We had M109 A1s and our FDC was in a M577 A1 command post carrier. We still had jeeps and M548s to haul the ammo. 5 ton trucks and M561 gamma goats, those were real man killers. In fact during my whole time in the army 81 to 89 we still wore old Steel pot helmets and ate C rations. We did live fire excersizes at Grafenwohr near the east German border and during my year there we went on like 3 reforges. We would rail load like these guys then move to Grafenwohr unload and fire right in front of the east German and Russian guard towers. On reforger we would drive out of Baumholder and drive around Germany, crash our way through tiny little villages and destroy cars, sign posts, buildings and just keep going, some officer followed behind us and wrote out IOUs for the damage then we'd pull over into some farmers field and do dry firing missions mostly with our nuke rounds and fuses. The higher ups always denied this but we knew that with only 250,000 men plus a handful of Brits, bundeswehr, along we were facing some 4,000,000 reds with 20,000 guns and 40,000 tanks so there was no way we could win. The plan was to hold the Fulfa Gap till reinforcements from Greenland we're airlifted over first to Britain then across the channel to us. Hopefully the French would mobilize but it would take them days to a week or more to get troops across the Rhein. Because of that after most of us were killed off we would keep one gun what we called then gun number 3 the base piece a scratch FDC and an ammo section to pass out nukes rounds to the gun, we at the fdc would open the safe and get the nuke firing codes to get the nuke fuses out of the safe . Screw in the fuses, set the deflection and Quadrant and charge height of burst at 50 meters then shoot a couple nukes at the 4th Siberian horde and pack up and try to get to France before the reds and the nuke clouds didn't get us first. I read recently where what they now are calling the war scare of 83 which had been classified had had it's info partially released but most of it was still secret. Of course by 1990 the wall came down and filthy ass wipe commies collapsed excepr for a handful of lunatics like Putin who should be tied to the back of a tank and dragged across the Ukraine then nailed to a tree in Moscow like we used to do to people we had no use for down south. just so you know I was born in Texas not far from the Alamo and have lived the last 45 years in Alabama!!! I may be 64 now but I'm still an expert marksman. If they would take me I'd volunteer to go to Ukraine and try to kill one or two before they got me. By the way when we drove through those German villages there were always three or four old fellows who would come to attention and give us a good straight arm salute, Wehrmacht or waffen SS they knew we were there to fight the filthy reds. We all just saluted back no one made fun of them. At their age you knew they were veterans of the worse war of the last 100 years. Long live Ukraine.

When I was young in the early 1970's, my family visited Germany and Austria. We were in some old restaurant in some small village in Germany. I was in the bathroom and all of a sudden the entire building started shaking and I thought it would collapse and there was all this noise outside. So I went outside to check out what was going on and it was the US military driving their tanks through the city. Being just a kid I thought it was awesome. I retired in 1997 as a Senior Warrant flying Blackhawks. Once out, I completed my BS and Master's Degrees and was recalled back on active duty x 3 years (after being out 10 years (hip pocket orders) in 2007 because the 1st Cav was short Blackhawk pilots & bodies to go to Iraq. That's because they have helicopter turbine engines, not diesel motors. The M1 Abrams turbine produces about 1,500 horsepower and with the governor removed can move about 60Mph on flat land. Its not a contest, its a good design, just like the leopard.
@samanli-tw3id8 жыл бұрын
Tim Nelson I thought, turbines are louder than diesels, you know how loud the jet engines on commercial airplanes are.
@southwestxnorthwest8 жыл бұрын
samanli2014 Turbines all vary. Keep in mind that the turbine engines in the M1 produce 1500 shaft horsepower. On a Boeing 737-500, the two CFM56-3 engines each produce 18,500 to 20,000 pounds of thrust at 300 knots. That converts to about 18,000 horsepower each, or 36,000 shaft horsepower combined. Those engines are much louder because they are more powerful. Turbochargers and superchargers in a car are considered turbines, yet you don't hear them like a jet engine because they are much smaller
@samanli-tw3id8 жыл бұрын
Tim Nelson So take a diesel engine and a gas turbine, both have the same amount of horsepower and rpm, which one is quieter?
@southwestxnorthwest8 жыл бұрын
samanli2014 Haha, no no this is not true. Diesel works on combustion by way of high heat and compression, which forces the pistons up and down on a crankshaft, etc. Turbines are a very complex process that I cannot describe, except that they do not have pistons, and compress air also. Turbines spin VERY fast, the engineering in them must be precise to a near exact measurement. In terms of fuel and shaft horsepower they tend to be more efficient also. The US military is working on a new engine for the M! though, to replace the turbines. The existing turbines produce a very hot exhaust that is very difficult to conceal from thermal optics and requires that infantry following behind must stay back a distance, which reduces cover that the tanks provide. Also, the turbine engines in these are not efficient at all; they use about 1.6gpm and startup sequence of the turbine itself uses about 16 gallons of fuel.
