U.S. to help Panama deport migrants crossing Darién Gap

The U.S. will soon begin helping Panama deport migrants crossing the treacherous Darién Gap to reach the southern border. CBS News immigration and politics reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez has details on the initiative.

This is another attention grabber from the GOP. I work in hotels/hospitality and can tell you, this is a racket. The hotels that have been contracted also ensure workers from the hotel union keep on having jobs.

Crossing Panama is the biggest challenge to migrate to the USA, I'm Brazilian and I wanted to live in the USA, I just haven't tried to get out of this hell I'm living in because crossing Panama is very dangerous, if you break your leg in the middle in the bush no one will help you, you die right there, people leave you behind, another challenge when crossing Panama is the cost of crossing 500 dollars, this amount is too much for a poor person to risk their life, if I had 500 dollars to tell the truth I would set up a business in my city and not leave here, another issue is the robberies and rapes, many people leave Brazil by bicycle and in Darién they have to pay for the crossing, after Panama they buy another bike and continue their trip , all this to get out of hell in Brazil, you don't know what we went through here so don't judge, you don't know what it's like to live in extreme poverty in the hands of militiamen, drug traffickers, corrupt politicians, etc.

The Panamanian border is a narrow bottleneck, it's only about 130 miles, and the Darién Gap is even narrower than that. Whereas the USA border with Mexico is about 2000 miles. Which would you rather patrol?

Solving the border crisis means building walls not just at the US southern border, but also in mexicos southern border and other Central American countries borders. Also it involves a huge economic incentive. A marshal plan for the western hemisphere. Divesting from China in manufacturing and bringing all that opportunity to the Americas. Also a belt and road innitative similar to that of China but for the Americas. Invest heavily in the Americas. Turn the Americas into a prosperous economic bloc similar to that of the EU. Forge a security and economic alliance with the Americas. This would keep the Chinese and Russian at bay from this side of the world and ensure US dominance over the entire world for centuries to come. Unfortunately our foreign policy is fixated on Europe and keeping Russia and China at bay for the past 70-80 years. And have neglected the immense potential of our own western hemisphere. Until the Americas is prosperous the immigration issue would persist
