Excellent video, and hopefully this will help those who have not yet been mugged - it is easy to get comfortable and complacent. This guy’s experience proves it. When I go out at night as a foreigner in places like Manila, Angeles city (Fields/Perimeter), Bangkok, Pattaya, Tijuana, etc… I always carry a “dummy wallet”; AND….then I have an amount of cash on me that I am expecting to spend for the evening - divided up and hidden in various inside pockets (w/zippers, or buttons at least). Then, also as a precaution, I carry a copy of my Passport, a short list of emergency phone #’s, and a copy of my drivers license. I do this in case anything might happen to me where I could possibly be incapacitated for a time, so that I can be quickly identified…… (and also having copies of your documents is smart in case you lose the real documents - which you should always have locked up in a safe anyway).

I gotta laugh at this one Brian!! I was warned by my gal as we were at market are and Apo church..before we went she said sternly..leave your wallet at home..I said i will bring it and leave it under the seat of the car..Well.. long story short, i forgot and as we were going through market, i kept my hand in front pocket on my wallet..as we entered the church a bunch of older women were cramming against me as im going through entrance doors..i momentarily had my hand out of pocket..I lost a lot of cash..all my id's except my passport..( which is always home) all told ..i lost $400 usd in cash , my bank card.. and my pride. Later, the next day I get an email saying thank you for your Mac Pro computer valued at $3,800 usd..At least that did not go through since i cancelled my card. This guy got off easy!! I luckily got a fb messenger call 3 days later someone found my ids in a parking lot..no wallet of course!!

You're right about churches especially in Manila. I asked the lass on the desk where I stayed for a week or two that I'd like to go and see the famous Quiapo Church. I was advised to steer clear of that area as it's a well known pickpocket/slasher/ kidnapper hangout. I had it reconfirmed by my wife and other members if her family. It's a sad state of affairs when it's too dangerous to go to a church. I am not at all religious. I am an amateur historian. I suppose desperate times breed desperate people.

My dad was a World War 2 Navy vet, who was stationed in the Philippines for part of his tour. That is where he learned it... And he did it all his life. He carried his extra wallet with ten $1 bills, fake little cards and an old key to a house he lived in years ago. It was enough that he never really got rolled. Plus, he got his black belt in his 30's and after that nobody wanted to screw with him. Still carried that wallet, though! 👍🤣😂

@@PhiloM I never carry more than I need and I protect my shit. I've lived in 8 countries and spent extended time in 26 countries, between government contracting, military, work and other things. I've lived in places 10 times more dangerous than the Philippines and had my personal and home security mapped out Now that I'm retired and married, I have my wife and her family to think about. We're very careful, I'm well known here as someone to absolutely not f*ck with. The only stuff I carry in my pockets, even then, is stuff I can afford to get lifted by street thugs. And here, the street thugs are ALWAYS armed. 100% chance they have knives, 50% chance that at least 1 or 2 among them have guns. Nobody can outrun a bullet. Carry only what you need and be careful, head on a swivel, cuz robberies happen here day or night. Nobody is exempt. Edit: they're not alone, the thugs are always in 2's, 3's or more. A guy I knew of in the cartels here was robbed by those thugs. Didn't matter to them! They'll rob anyone. They did disappear overnight, though...

Hi Philly, I just subscribed to your channel, and I have some great info for your friend Chris. I’m sure you are familiar with Steve Johnson, who’s blog is “The Info Channel.” Since Chris is a veteran, he should already know, that he’s entitled to getting the “Veteran’s” Visa. For a one time fee of $3000, his visa will never expire. He won’t have to renew it every three years, or anything like that. He won’t have to leave the country after three years or anything like that. Please pass this on to him, to get a hold of Steve Johnson, whose contract with the Filipino government is a woman named Mary Rose. She already gets paid through the government, so she will be able to save your Veteran friends a fortune. I’m sorry Chris got mugged, but this is a good blog to share, keep up the great blogs, 😎👍🏼😉.

Been married to a wonderful Filipina for almost 20 years. Love the Philippines, but there are some less fortunate people in the Philippines who are hungry, tired, frustrated and will do anything for a dollar or Peso. Foreigners are obviously the preferred target. I'm in the Philippines at least every three years, but one thing I've learned is to keep my situational aware when I'm there. Maybe the US Marine Corps taught me that, but it has certainly helps me when I'm walking anywhere there. Chris is fortunate and I'm happy to see he's ok and has taken this in stride.

Me too - except I've been married 42 years. My previous military training - especially on active service has put me in good stead. I/we also visit every couple of years. My wife's mobile phone has been the only thing ever stolen. Of course, I've been ripped off by a number of taxi drivers - that's part of the course of being a foreigner here. As I used to work in customer service, I don't mind paying extra for good service. Most of the time, I get good service here. At home in Australia, I rarely travel by taxi as it's very expensive and the industry appears to be staffed by shifty Indians these days.

I had a flashback, hearing this story. But, it was YEARS ago, in 1988. I was stationed at Clark, and had an old clunker car. I was on Fields, looking to park, and a bunch of young kids came running to the car, asking for money. I had on a "decent" watch, and had my arm out the window. They were grabbing my arm, like "beggars" would do, when I realized it; they were going for my watch! I slammed on the brakes, and grabbed the kids arm who grabbed my arm at first. Sure enough, he had the watch off, and in his hand! He tried to toss it to his buddy, but I grabbed it out of his hand first. I still had an iron grip on him, which I was not releasing. I was not small, at 6'3', 225lbs, but, as he just smiled sheepishly at me, knowing he got caught, I realized I couldn't do anything but let him go! I learned a lot, but it was worth it, as those kids didn't bother me ever again, AND, I saved my watch, by sheer luck!

Had it in Makati, I give them a swift back hander don't care how old they are. Just have your wits about you. Walking around with an iphone and gopro is a very large "come and get me sign". Angeles is like the Wild West, it's lawless. Here in Davao no street gangs roaming around, they would disappear and not on their own accord.

Very embarassing acts of my countrymen. Been going on for decades. Foreigners are very easy tempting prey but it happens to locals too. Well, cannot blame any side. These people are usually owned and run by syndicates. Poor kids from poor families are taken advantage of and used as tools. Not every place in the country is that bad. But, as a general warning, as much as possible, stuff most important items like cash, wallets, passports, phones, etc. on body pouches zipped up preferably in front of you, or in any other way that pickpockets find it difficult to victimize you. Not in your trouser pockets. Small change may be okay there. That is SOP, the way groups will surround you, so that you are confused and won't know what's really happening. Your pockets are the most targets.I only got robbed by a pickpocket once, in a jeepney ride. Was all packed-up and had my wallet at my back pocket. Learned my lesson. Never again. Prepping is the key.

That's not a mugging. He allowed them too much into his personal space. I had 1-6 kids surround me over there initially pleading nearly everyday, and knew I had to put their asses in check immediately! I would play their same game, but in a different way. I never felt good about counter aggression on poor people just trying to hustle, but it's no different then the hood here in the U.S. where you can't let yourself to be recognized as easy.

100% correct. I really sympathize with CJ. My wife had her cellphone stolen by a taxi driver (I think) as he pulled up in a dark spot outside a mall in Manila and I think it 'disappeared' when she opened her handbag to pay the driver. I always carry an old UK military heavy canvas 37Pattern kit bag as my 'man bag'. I also wear my old Rhodie combat cap. Even at home, I'm very cautious whenever I go out. Great attitudes and advice, lads.

Several years ago an Aussie guy did a withdrawal from an ATM in Cebu city. The same thing happened to him whereby he was surrounded and jostled by a group of kids scattering his money on the ground. The kids quickly gathered it up and ran off. The man is a martial arts instructor but was unable to do anything, as Chris said, if you harm the kids you will finish up in jail for child abuse or such like. Apparently the Police contacted him, having caught the kids and got some of his money back for him. There was a suggestion of someone in a position of authority being in charge of the kids???

Be advised, that the cops will not do anything to those kids. Some of them are living in poverty, and they only do things like this to try to survive. Sometimes, their parents will encourage this activity. Whatever you do, don't get caught putting your hands on any of them. You will pay a bigger price than whatever you've lost. And you can count on what I've posted here! I've seen how quickly things can go south for anyone seen putting their hands on one of these kids. It could cost you your life!

no shame buddy, A work colleague of mine took a weekend away to Pisa in Italy with his wife at his side. We were working on a boat restoration project in Viareggio, A one hour train ride away. Upon reaching Pisa railway station, amongst the crowd they were confronted by Gipsy's selling good luck flowers. As he tried to fend them away he realised in a few moments that his bumbag was gone from around his waist.!!..There was confusion and terror on their part. They cornered a policeman to help them and realised after a while that he too was part of the scam as he distracted them away from the scene of the crime. The "policeman" then vanished'......Sadly the organised gang had escaped with $3000 in that bumbag along with other stuff like I.D.. They were distraught, it had taken a month's earnings to put aside that cash to spend on leisure. Be aware , it's the same in most countries, no matter how civilised it may seem. Take precautions and don't be naive.

There was a bill that a well-meaning, feel good senator that he crafted, and passed into law, that supposed to protect minors or kids that if they are caught by the police doing illegal activity, they wont go to jail or go on trial but will be turned over to their parents or to the Department of Welfare and Social Services. Basically, they know get free pass. The delinquent kids know this and they take advantage of it. On the hind sight, this law might need to be reviewed or modified because bad elements are being emboldened by this law and taking advantage of it.

U go in jail for trying to get back what others stole from you? Weird world. Some kids pickpocked me in cebu once, i notice them doing it, but i ignored it, since all i had in that backpocked was some worthless paper from the hotel and that was not worth it to cause a scene over. But to show what lowlife they are, and that they have no shame what so ever. When they realized that they didnt have any use for this paper, they tried to act like i drop it, to get a reward. Yeah they are real saints.

That used to happen many years ago when I was stationed at Clark, we used to carry a handful of coins, and when you saw them coming, we would throw the coins in the street to get them to go that way! Times are getting hard again here and it’s going to get a lot worse! Leave your valuables at home and don’t take anything you are not ready to give up. Stay Safe

Never got mugged YET but I had a traffic enforcer try to extort money for a driving offence that never happened. Made up my mind at that point that if thats how little respect they have for foreigners then I will always be a target. Decided to spend my older years in Canada.

Sadly, a number of these juvenile crime gangs are run by corrupt cops. They also run the 'beggars syndicates'. Many of the PNP are good, professional police however there are always a few rotten apples in every barrel.

Brian, you should let him know that the VFW does have an American APO address that you can get a box # for . You have to be retired military to use the service. They only allow letters and VA medication...NO PACKAGES. But it is a good place to have a US mailing address even though it is an APO.....I have not been to that side of town since Covid started so not sure if the PO Box service is still in effect. But if you look into it, it would be a good idea to promote for the retired military expats.....just a thought since your friend mentioned he didn't have a US mailing address.....another great video! A good dose of reality....even in Angeles.

I've been to many different countries. Lived in the US and Canada. Same crime there too. I've seen things like these happen in a lot of Touristy spots in Europe. Nothing that different really, it's just that they're not in their home turf, so these things looks different to them.

Yeah that almost happend to me. About 3 kids came upto me. Lucky I had cargo pants but they were putting their hands in my pockets but I don't carry phones and my wallet was in my velcro pockets. I yelled at them and told them to "GO AWAY". I always take just the one credit card and leave the others in my luggage.

I wouldn't call this a 'mugging' as a mugging usually involves some kind of violence. This was a bunch of kids that got him distracted, one of them pick-pocketed his phone and then took off. The key is to carry as little as possible. I never carry a wallet, only carry as much cash as I might need for whatever outing I'm on [and maybe my debit card], my phone and nothing more. There's no 'wallet bulge' and the phone is either in my hand or in a zipped pocket. If I need to carry more stuff [a camera] then it's in a small pack I carry. And avoid groups of kids. I've seen some foreigners get real chummy with them thinking they're so 'cute' and then later find half their stuff was lifted from their pockets.

Man.....I'm impressed by how smart the kids are! Here in the states 8 year old's are not smart enough to even ride their bicycles around the neighborhood alone much less work in packs well enough to rob grown adults! I've been to a few 3rd world countries and have seen these kids and stayed clear.

20 years military lived in Italy and travel all through Euro, lived in Japan, Philippines, been almost every were in Asia except for Russia. and all of Asia, Australia, Newzeland and still in living in the naborhood. It's the same in any big city any were, need to be smart when your alone. It's like riding a motorcycle you need your head on a swivel when walking. When I need to go to the bank or ATM for larger some of money I have my peper spray on hand. I were cargo pants or cargo shorts and shirt with pocket, keep money in money clip in front pocket with a simple US photo ID card. I have 2 Phones good phone and cheep through away go out phone, keep phone, camera in front side cargo pocket. Like shirts with pocket keep a tiny amount of local cash and change if I am pined toss the cash from my shirt and bolt. Nothing I hate more than a thief.
