I was there. Just before my 19th birthday. They were supporting the Police. It was the first big gig in Ireland, around 30,000 if I remember and about £6 a ticket , how times and prices have changed. Squeeze also played and were amazing. I agree with one of the other comments that this is live film spliced with studio sound but who cares. This is the only video I've seen of the entire concert. There is audio of the police , especially when someone threw a bottle at sting during Roxanne and he went mental. It's amazing in hindsight that the event wasn't officially filmed. If only they'd known what was to come. As they say, everything's great in hindsight 😋

Was there, great first gig and what a lineup. Was an early U2 fan and was obsessed with the Police at the time.

From 1976-1981, Leixlip castle was my local castle/music venue, i sold band merchandise, specifically "U2" pencil cases to get a free ticket into this gig!..gotta love you tube!

Not forgetting the legendary John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett who also played their classics "Cor Baby that's really free" and "Look out for the flowers, coz I'm sure they're gonna get you, yeah"

it was maybe 28 years ago, for me is a long time but i like very much u2. In my High School i write sometimes a article of u2, the name of the newspaper is Mameli Magazine. P.S u2 are the best in the world!!

When I hear/watch the old U2 I get the impression they were more like a band back then. Nowadays it all seems to be about Bono and The Edge

its unbelievable that they only formed the band 4 years before and edge had to learn how to play.you could say he learnt pretty fast. easily the best live band ever

Merci FB .

U lucky sod! My mum wouldn't let me go even though my cousin played with the Virgin prunes around then so we sorta knew them - and I was a MASSIVE Police fan! (He said they would never play Ireland again after that bottle incident - and they didn't until the reunion tour!) I did see them in the Dandelion market in 1979 though!

ColmEFC, this is the 'as is overdub' the way this video was released by the U2 camp, or some other body, way back in the 1980's. I've had this recording as is since 1992 which I got from a world class U2 collector.

Thanks for posting this on youtube. I have articles from this period in my scrapbook. I was a kid with a younger brother who LOVED new music and introduced me to the band. I didn't get to see them live until 1983. But met them and Sting at the press conference for Conspiracy of hope. I knew they had something no other band had at the time, plus I have Irish roots so... I was hooked. Bono kissed me on the cheek. I also met Coretta Scott King that day. Thanks for bringing back the memories....

That is so cool! I was a young kid too when I first heard them on college radio in the states. They came to my city in 1981 (I have a casette copy of that show) but i missed the show. They came back in 83 and I caught the show and then for the next several tours I went. I knew then they were really special. I just had no idea they would still be doing amazing concerts. I met them in 1986 actually with Sting for the Amnesty International show. Fun memoris.

If someone has an mp3 of the bootleg they can easily replace the studio dub in this video with the actual live audio...

Well it was 27 years ago so imagine what they'd look like now. I can't believe it's so long ago. I was there. It was just after Borg had beaten McEnroe in the greatest Wimbledon final ever. Today the Police are pensioners, Paul Young appears on celebrity chef shows, Bono is an honorary English knight, there's a motorway running through where that concert took place, and some of those hot chicks could be grandmothers. Makes you think.

Yes - I was there also: If you look closely behind Larry and the drum set, you will see piping in the shape of U2 - That was the full extent of their "promo" and who they were. I came to see 'The Police" who sounded terrible and went away wondering who was this great group from North Dublin. They had a group of fans right down close to the stage cheering them, but by the 2nd or 3rd song they had won over the whole audience. My pereception was that concert made them a popular group in Ireland and outsid eof North Dublin. David

I agree partially with you. They probably are good friends but, musically speaking, it seems that Adam and Larry had more influence at the beginning then they have now (especially their first three records). I don't mean to be nostalgic, though, as I still prefer them in the nineties.

This clip is a fraud! The audio is from a studio recording, except at the very beginning and at the very end. At 3:02 you can see Bono yelling into the microphone and you don't even hear him. There are numerous times that you hear backing vocals but no one is singing into the microphones. It sounds like someone spliced a studio audio recording on top of a live video. Also, it sounds like someone put crowd noises(cheering) on top of it. Someone really tried hard to deceive everyone but it failed.
@ardeeculchie14 жыл бұрын
U2 kinda sucked that day, no one was impressed except for the 100 fans up front who then threw bottles at the Police. The hit Stuart kit and he stopped the show saying its those U2 fans down there. He came to the front of the stage and pointed them out ! Squeeze played also and I forget who else. This is NOT the original audio.
