"Love is a temple, love the higher law, you ask me to enter but then you make me crawl, and I can't be holding on...to what you got...when all you got is hurt." There are few lyrics which rival this.

Quite possibly my favorite U2 song! The first time I saw them play it live, I literally had tears rolling down my face. This song was created at a pivotal time for the band in 1990. They were thinking of breaking up because they weren’t all on the same page regarding the band’s musical direction. Composing this song showed the band how powerful they were together!

Bono once said this in an interview once ““The song is a bit twisted,” Bono explained in Neil McCormick’s U2 By U2, “which is why I could never figure out why people want it at their weddings. I have certainly met a hundred people who’ve had it at their weddings. I tell them, ‘Are you mad? It’s about splitting up!’” Proving people only hear what they want to hear sometimes.
@JPMadden3 жыл бұрын
Apparently Jayy hearing this for the first time understood it better than myself, who has heard it countless times. I've always thought it was a plea for people to love one another, despite our imagined differences.

My favourite version,is when he slightly re-wrote the lyrics after hearing that one of his best friends Michael Hutchence passed away. They played in Mexico City roughly just 1 week later......one of the most emotional ONE performances for me. Bono fighting to not break and to do his friend justice........i loved both INXS and U2 (still do),so it was hard and beautiful to withness that performance!

This is the song that saved U2. They were on the verge of breaking up during the recording of Achtung Baby. During a jam, Bono started to count....1,2,3...too late tonight....1....to drag the past out into the light. The others joined in and the song "walked into the room" said Bono. Bono would adjust the lyrics to feel like a relationship but it was their relationship as a band. They left the studio realizing that the sum of the 4 was 1

If U2 just stopped trying to make new music after their legendary 2002 Super Bowl halftime show we’d have another 20 years of untarnished U2. It can’t be understated how big this band was from the early 80s-late 90s. Even Nirvana grunge fans loved U2.

If you really want to hear him belt out a love song, try "Night and Day". Interesting fact about this song, their are 3 different official videos for it. Great Reaction. You commented on one of the (many) things I fell in love with. Bono's rasp. Some singers this is just their voice. It is constant, it is who they are. It is ever present. With Bono, the rasp feels naturally, but as you pointed out, he emphasizes or de-emphasizes according to the need of the song, and the part of the song. He didn't always have the rasp. I believe this developed with age, drink, smoke and constant touring. In performances earlier in his career, you can hear his voice is cleaner. However it is just that. His style and delivery evolved. Earlier it was more about energy and force. He would belt it out or whisper. Here we see more nuance and variety. Yes, he can sure belt out a lyric with passion and intensity, but there is also subtlety and nuance. The rasp in this performance adds a weariness. It is not merely pain. As the music picks up, Edge's "solo" enters only a more uplifting tone, Bono starts his falsetto. It is a turn from that somberness and weariness to a glimmer of light and hope at the end.

This song was really about the band itself and the fact that there were problems within the band when this was written. It expresses the fact that they are first and foremost friends who came together as "one" to create this band, but the deeper meaning is about their love for each other as friends.
