I don't know if you have reacted to "Pride in the Name of Love" but you should. It's about Dr King. There's also a version of this song that Mary J Blige sings with them. It's heartfelt and beautiful. Just a beautiful song.
@bminturn3 жыл бұрын
It's musically one of the most beautiful songs that I've ever heard. U2 has a few in this category for me. As far as the content of the song goes, I think that you've basically put your finger on it. It's kind of a dual narrative. On the one hand, you have a troubled relationship between (in this case) a man and his wife, but also a troubled relationship between a son and his father. The former is autobiographical from the guitarist's life, while the latter is from Bono's life. So you get this sense of a relationship that is falling apart because lack of care by one, or both, partners. But you also have this tension between a son and his father, where he's saying "Look, we don't always like each other, but 'We GET to carry each other'". The use of "get" instead of "got" is important here. He's basically saying, "Look, dad, I know that I've done things to piss you off, and you have done things to piss me off, but this life that we share, and the opportunity to carry each other through the rough times, is not a burden. It is a gift. So appreciate it."

U2 has a very deep and diverse catalog of songs. A band not afraid to push themselves in new directions. Been a fan since 1982, and I've seen them in concert 19 times over the years. It's great to see their music reach new people.
@a.s.2d8173 жыл бұрын
You're right about the interpretation of this song. Like many U2's works this could be read in different ways, and many people interpret it as a romantic song. Actually it is mostly about the band, written when they were close to splitting. It didn't happen and One even unlocked their inspiration once again, so Achtung Baby was born, a masterpiece and one of the most influential albums since the 90's :)

This song, along with"With or Without You" and "Night and Day" are my top 3 favorites. I love how you describe Bono, I think you are spot on. PS Interesting tidbit: there are 3 official versions of this video-- one features herds of Buffalo, the second, harder to find, directed by Anton Corning, is similar to this, but each of the band members at some point are dressed as women and the focus, I believe is that men and women, though different are the same in their humanity and desire to be loved. As always, love, love, love your reactions.

"Where the Streets Have No Name" is another amazing and powerful U2 song. You should definitely review this song. U2 sang this at the 2002 Superbowl halftime show and showcased all of the victims of 9/11. This song and "One" are their best songs. If you can try to watch their 2002 halftime show. It's a very emotional experience and shows the power and positivity of music.

Excellent reaction! Bono is a brilliant songwriter and humanitarian. I agree with your assessment. He is preaching love and understanding in most of his songs. He sings "but we're not the same" because we're all different in many ways; and separate but equal has always been a flawed policy. Together and equal is a much better concept.

I don't know if it's true in the last decade or so, but for a time this was a popular song at weddings. Another strange choice for weddings is "Something" by The Beatles. "You're asking me will my love grow? I don't know! You stick around now, it may show. I don't know!"

It was thought at the time it was released it was about someone dying of aids and their father visiting them one last time. Here's what Wikipedia said: There was some speculation that the song described a conversation between a father and his HIV-positive gay son, based on the connection of the song to David Wojnarowicz, a gay artist who died of AIDS. In 2005, Bono said "It's a father-and-son story. I tried to write about someone I knew who was coming out and was afraid to tell his father. It's a religious father and son." If you listen to it with that meaning a possibility it really is sad.

I’m a huge U2 fan. This is a great dysfunctional love song but probably the greatest message to the world. Something as simple as we “get” to carry each other. 1 life 1 chance 1 opportunity to carry each other and do right. We are not the same. But we all get 1 chance to do what we should.

Pay specific attention to the first time around when Bono says "We get to Harry each other, Harry each other." All the times we attack each other often for no reason. Then at the end he says "We get to Carry each other, Carry each other." TO lift each other up and end this perpetual torment and turmoil.

Excellent reaction, and especially your review to the lyrics. The appealing sentiment he seems to possess when singing is embodied perfectly in *U2's Please* - a brilliant track from the album "Pop" where Bono displays his earnest deep message for peace amidst the I.R.A. (Irish Republican Army) and the British occupying forces in Northern Ireland. Which is further convoluted by "Catholics versus Protestants" within both Ireland and Northern Ireland. I believe you enjoy this particular emotionally climatic track!

Bono said that during the time of his band bickering and not getting along they're Christianity played a big part of who they were and they sat down and they talked about we want to be a Christian band then we have to deal with having to forgive each other for these that we intended not to harm each other but have and he said it was about coming together as one in the name of Christ this band they always and always song made references to God in Christ in about love one another in about the love of Christ listen carefully to all their lyrics they always said they've been a Christian band a lot of people don't seem to know that they thought they were an alternative band in a punk band but they were a Christian band they were about social responsibility in helping fellow man.

Yeah this is another song that Johnny Cash covered he did a really good job as well you know it's funny back in the 80s it seems like a lot of places where I ended up we're the same place as that you too they were there after the fact I used to work in downtown Los Angeles did U2 concert Up on the Rooftop and that same area I'd be out in Joshua Tree they had their picture taken their of the album to get a song about the streets With No Name turns out to be California City it was an area they put in all these streets because they thought there was going to be a big government contract and they were putting in an aerospace facility there but then that got scrubbed so all you have is these streets without any houses and no names and they were out there as well I was there with my friend because he had a fit a sailplane and we took it up up to the top of the Sierras we got these thermals and a plane just kept Rising see the thing is with a sailplane it has L motor you just take it up about three hundred feet and they let you go and then you've got to find the hot air to lift you up we got lucky that day
