Lyrics:
If you twist and turn away.
if you tear yourself in two again.
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would let it go.
Surrender, dislocate.
If I could throw this lifeless life-line to the wind.
Leave this heart of clay, see you walk, walk away
Into the night, and through the rain
Into the half light and through the flame.
If I could, through myself, set your spirit free
I'd lead your heart away, see you break, break away
Into the light and to the day.
To let it go and so to find away.
To let it go and so find away.
I'm wide awake.
I'm wide awake, wide awake.
I'm not sleeping.
If you should ask, then maybe
They'd tell you what I would say
True colours fly in blue and black
Blue silken sky and burning flag.
Colours crash, collide in blood-shot eyes.
If I could, you know I would If I could, I would let it go.
This desperation, dislocation
Separation, condemnation
Revelation, in temptation
Isolation, desolation
Let it go and so to find away
To let it go and so to find away
To let it go and so to find away
I'm wide awake,
I'm wide awake, wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh no, no, no.

For people who crtitize this band, the dont understand about thé réal music! By réal pur Guys! Plenty of friends dont understand my passion for them! @@legin3753 I don't think the Live Aid version is better than this one. It's more significant, iconic if you will, because it introduced the world to U2, but sound wise, no way. This is as clean as it gets and Bono's vocals are on another level.

I 1,000% agree. This is their greatest song ever, and this version is so amazing. There's a vastness to it that feels almost ethereal, and all of them are so tight musically at this moment in time. Truly a beautiful piece of music.

My favorite version of my favorite U2 song. I remember hearing it in 1996 after my grandmother passed away. Driving west out of Albuquerque singing along to this with tears streaming down my cheeks just staring at that gorgeous landscape. I think of that moment every time I hear this.

This is the version they put on the Wide Awake in America EP. I used to listen to it on repeat over and over driving at night in a ‘78 Chevy 4x4 with a subwoofer behind the seat so I felt every part of that bass line. That was me singing my heart out, howling at the moon , in the wilds of Northern New Mexico at the end of the 90s. It’s always the song I come back to when I’m feeling excited or in need of some motivation. The song is pure power for me.

I was 15 and had forgotten how much U2's music just blew my mind at the time. They were so fresh, so different. Beyond all the hatred they collect today, there's no denying how original they were and how peculiar their sound was. 37 years later I recognize that The Edge was one of the most original and innovative guitarists in rock history, his guitar is so "spacious" so evocative. And Larry Mullen is perhaps one of the most underrated drummers ever, he is a power metronome and his fills are absolutely unique and always in good taste. And I don't remember a performance by these guys where Bono didn't fire all his cartridges and I don't remember a time he missed a note. So, 37 years later It's happen to hear this song again and feel joy and nostalgia.

As a guitarist, when you have all the effects off (particularly the delays) Edge’s lines are incredibly simple. What’s hard is trying to ensure the timing of things while they are on, especially if you’re trying to learn the songs. I’ve almost had to dial in the delays just so I can play, and I’m unsure if I’ve gotten them right.

For me, the beauty of this song is the way that Clayton and Mullins keep the pace, driving the song along with a wall of sound, it allows the Edge to take over and then hold back coming and going fading in, fading out, The Edge and Bono take it in turns to headline the song, all the while the bass and drum giving the song relentless energy, this is pure gold, and a trio of Live Aid highlights, along with Bowies Heroes and the We will Rock You/We are the Champions finale by Queen

@@LrngMn Yes, I know it's not Live Aid, there is no way that any artist could be a part of a hastily put-together show and be able to tailor the limited practice time to suit their music and be happy with the recording, Live Aid was not for the music connoisseurs, it was never intended to be that. The point I am making is this song well and truly put U2 on the map at Live Aid, and was, for me, one of three stand-out performances that day. This particular performance of Bad is exceptional.

I got to witness an incredible performance of this song in Chicago during the Amnesty International tour, along with Peter Gabriel's Biko. I've seen MANY concerts, and saw many U2 concerts, especially during this period in the band's history. I've seen many of the biggest bands is the world. Prince was an amazing stage presence, but no one, and I mean NO ONE, has a stage presence like Bono. His ability to connect with his audience when he is on stage is incredible. And I'm comparing that to the Stones, Queen, you name it. I once heard someone say seeing U2, especially during this period, was akin to a religious experience, and I couldn't agree more.

I've said this already in my comments for the recently remastered and rereleased video for 'A Sort of Homecoming', but "Wide Awake in America" is a watermark album which takes me back to a magical time in my youth. And "Bad" was my gateway to discovering U2's catalogue before The Joshua Tree / Rattle and Hum. This version brings me back to that rainy night in November 1987 (merely days away from my 14th birthday), when the Joshua Tree Tour came to BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The lads set that balloon-roofed stadium afire with a pointed version of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', then elevated that fire into the sky with a soaring, endless rendition of 'Bad'. When they didn't play 'Bad' in 2017 when the JT Tour returned to BC Place (the balloon roof replaced by a retractable one 7 years prior) I was not disappointed because I finally got to hear "...Homecoming" live. The irony of which was not lost on me. After the concert I reminisced with my wife about seeing U2 live 30 years prior, as we walked "...Into the night And through the rain Into the half-light And through the flame..." Well...without the rain and flame, to be honest...because it was May...but you all get the gist :-)

I've always felt that this song is a prayer for someone to find an internal peace they have been looking for without much success. It speaks to them on a level of compassion and understanding, with an undertone of desperation that this prayer will be answered. It was this aspect of U2 that made me look deeper into my Catholic background, and to find the deeper meanings of my faith in God.

U2 is my oldest love in music. Bono's voice, Edge's great sound and guitar playing and the solid and original spine of the band with Larry and Adam who are always forgotten... Juts one of the best bands still active that never changed a band member and that was never afraid to take chances. I would love your input on our last video. If you have just 3 minutes to listen and a bit more to comment, that would mean the world to me. Keep rockin' : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5epZZqLdsRpqLM

The Greatest Band of All Time. The minute I first listened to them in the mid 80's in High School they became my favorite band to this day. What's beautiful about this group is that they are still together like the Stones which is a feat rarely accomplished with artists. How many groups can say that they sound the same from studio to live. To hear the audience sing with them from every country in English is amazing. The only other bands that have impressed me in the last 20 years is Foo Fighters and Disturbed. That is what a Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is made up of. It shouldn't be made up of anyone who has picked up a microphone before.

He amazes us with the sound variations he gets with those foot pedals in front of him on the floor. Bono pegged it early on when someone interviewing them asked about him and his stage moniker. Bono said he was always looking for new stuff/techniques, wanting to gain an "Edge" if you will !!!

Like a lot of people at the time, I was 15 as well when U2's music turned my head in the most radical way. It was The Edge's guitar sound that took me out of the heavy metal phase I was engaged in. Which I loved for a time. Iron Maiden being in the top 3. I noticed that one of the main reasons The Edge's guitar work grabbed my attention was that he was in E flat and sometimes a whole step down from concert pitch. Especially "11 O Clock Tick Tock" from Red Rocks. It gave it more color and ambience that I never paid attention to up to that point. Even his piano playing had a landscape of it's own. October, New Year's Day, Stranger In A Strange Land, Scarlett, and many others are stunningly beautiful. This version of Bad still makes me stop what I'm doing and pay close attention. And it's nothing complex at all... just shifting from A to D. Adam's bass lines still give me goosebumps. I kind of dropped out a bit after The Joshua Tree. appreciated them afterwards but didn't hone in as close as I did with Boy up to Joshua Tree.

I stopped listening to U2 about 14 years ago right after ''No Line On The Horizon''. I grew up with the band it's pretty much the only good thing my dad show me in life. I can't still believe how that band made so much good music in the 80-90's era and this song is something else, i can get why people hate the band these days but they could never tell me U2 is a bad band.
